  • Elytra Reduction May Affect the Evolution of Beetle Hind Wings
Zoomorphology https://doi.org/10.1007/s00435-017-0388-1 ORIGINAL PAPER Elytra reduction may affect the evolution of beetle hind wings Jakub Goczał1 · Robert Rossa1 · Adam Tofilski2 Received: 21 July 2017 / Revised: 31 October 2017 / Accepted: 14 November 2017 © The Author(s) 2017. This article is an open access publication Abstract Beetles are one of the largest and most diverse groups of animals in the world. Conversion of forewings into hardened shields is perceived as a key adaptation that has greatly supported the evolutionary success of this taxa. Beetle elytra play an essential role: they minimize the influence of unfavorable external factors and protect insects against predators. Therefore, it is particularly interesting why some beetles have reduced their shields. This rare phenomenon is called brachelytry and its evolution and implications remain largely unexplored. In this paper, we focused on rare group of brachelytrous beetles with exposed hind wings. We have investigated whether the elytra loss in different beetle taxa is accompanied with the hind wing shape modification, and whether these changes are similar among unrelated beetle taxa. We found that hind wings shape differ markedly between related brachelytrous and macroelytrous beetles. Moreover, we revealed that modifications of hind wings have followed similar patterns and resulted in homoplasy in this trait among some unrelated groups of wing-exposed brachelytrous beetles. Our results suggest that elytra reduction may affect the evolution of beetle hind wings. insects Brief Report Fungal Transformation of Tree Stumps into a Suitable Resource for Xylophagous Beetles via Changes in Elemental Ratios Michał Filipiak *, Łukasz Sobczyk and January Weiner Institute of Environmental Sciences, Jagiellonian University, ul. Gronostajowa 7, 30-387 Kraków, Poland; [email protected] (L.S.); [email protected] (J.W.) * Correspondence: michal.fi[email protected]; Tel.: +48-12-664-5134 Academic Editors: Tsuyoshi Yoshimura, Wakako Ohmura, Vernard Lewis and Ryutaro Iwata Received: 10 February 2016; Accepted: 5 April 2016; Published: 9 April 2016 Abstract: The elements present in dead pine stumps inhabited by larvae of wood-boring beetles (Stictoleptura rubra, Arhopalus rusticus and Chalcophora mariana) were analyzed over the initial (first 5 years; a chronosequence) stages of wood decay. The quantities of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu and Na (but not S) increased with increases in the content of ergosterol (used as a proxy for the amount of fungal tissue). In fact, the amounts of P, N, K, Fe and Cu presented marked increases. These findings show that fungi stoichiometrically rearrange dead wood by importing externally occurring nutrients to decaying stumps. During the first years of wood decay, the ratios of C to other elements decrease substantially, but differently, for various elements, whereas the N:Fe, N:Cu, N:P and N:K ratios remain relatively stable. Therefore, the stoichiometric mismatch between xylophages and their food is greatly reduced. By changing the nutritional stoichiometry of dead wood, fungi create a nutritional niche for wood-eaters, and these changes enable the development of xylophages.

This approach targeted certain species of the Longhorn Beetles (Cerambycidae) and Flower Beetles (Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae). It was intended to act as a complement to more classical technics used in the saproxylic beetles Red List program. In total, 305 species belong- ing to 43 families were captured. From a faunistic point of view, several captures are (re)discoveries for Switzerland or one of its biogeographical regions. We comment on the methods at the end of the article. Chapter 1 THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF PRESCRIBED BURNING OF CLEAR-CUTS ON SAPROXYLIC BEETLE DIVERSITY ARE SHORT-LIVED AND DEPEND ON FOREST-FIRE CONTINUITY Jonas Victorsson1,2,*, Lars-Ove Wikars1,3 and Stefan Ås1 1Animal Ecology, Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala University, Norbyvägen 18 D, SE-752 36 Uppsala, Sweden 2Department of Ecology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Box 7044, SE-750 07 Uppsala, Sweden 3Hovgården 66, SE -781 91 Borlänge, Sweden ABSTRACT Before modern forestry started, forest fire was the dominating large-scale disturbance in boreal forest. Prescribed burning of clear-cuts is increasingly used as a conservation measure but is potentially less beneficial for fire-associated species than burning of intact forest. We investigated the temporal effect of prescribed burning of clear-cuts in two regions in central Sweden: one region with a relatively unbroken forest- fire continuity (Orsa) and one region with a broken fire continuity (Långshyttan) more typical for Fennoscandia.

Chapter 8.1. In: Roques A et al. (Eds) Alien terrestrial arthropods of Europe. BioRisk 4(1): 193–218. doi: 10.3897/biorisk.4.56 Abstract A total of 19 alien longhorn beetle species have established in Europe where they presently account for ca. 2.8 % of the total cerambycid fauna. Most species belong to the subfamilies Cerambycinae and Laminae which are prevalent in the native fauna as well. Th e alien species mainly established during the period 1975–1999, arriving predominantly from Asia. France, Spain and Italy are by far the most invaded countries. All species have been introduced accidentally. Wood-derived products such as wood- packaging material and palettes, plants for planting, and bonsais constitute invasive pathways of increasing impor- tance. However, only few species have yet colonized natural habitats outside parks and gardens.

  • Dealing with Pest Infested Wood in the Pelleting Process
E3S Web of Conferences 239, 00018 (2021) https://doi.org/10.1051/e3sconf/202123900018 ICREN 2020 Dealing with pest infested wood in the pelleting process Holger Streetz1* 1 Bathan AG, Chief Operating Officer, Switzerland Abstract. The performance of a pellet plant depends highly on the feedstock quality and the pretreatment. The usual difficulties in operation increase when the wooden raw material is infested with pests and varmints. For the past years, we have been experiencing an increase in infections on a larger and broader scale. This means, more and more forests are experiencing dramatic losses. Infested wood is useless to the timber industry and needs to be removed from the woods to prevent further damage. 1. Introduction to Wood 1.1. Wood Structure Approximately 20 to 30 percent of dry mass of woody plants consists of lignin and the total production ads up to some 20 billion tons per year. Together with cellulose and chitin, lignin is the most common organic compound in the world. Biological and chemical-technical processes can break down lignin. Especially bacteria and fungi decompose lignin. However, higher evolved organisms cannot break down lignin. Thus, any pest infestation with insects such as longhorn beetles do not decrease the lignin amount of the wood. However, pelleting high ratios of infested wood in the feedstock mix will cause major issues with stability and abrasion resistance. Fig. 1 Wood structure [1] Plant cell walls are made of cellulose fibrils that are set in a matrix of pectin, hemi cellulose, proteins and lignin. Cellulose is the backbone of the plant cell wall and is characterized by its tensile strength, whereas lignin gives pressure strength.

  • Diversity of Saproxylic Beetles (Hexapoda: Coleoptera) in Clear-Cut Sites with Removed and Retained Stumps in Central Latvia
Acta Biol. Univ. Daugavp. 14 (2) 2014 ISSN 1407 - 8953 DIVERSITY OF SAPROXYLIC BEETLES (HEXAPODA: COLEOPTERA) IN CLEAR-CUT SITES WITH REMOVED AND RETAINED STUMPS IN CENTRAL LATVIA Inese Kivleniece, Arvīds Barševskis, Sakine Serap Avgin, Astra Zaļuma Kivleniece I., Barševskis A., Avgin S.S., Zaļuma A. 2014. Diversity of saproxylic beetles (Hexapoda: Coleoptera) in clear-cut sites with removed and retained stumps in central Latvia. Acta Biol. Univ. Daugavp., 14 (2): 145 – 157. Saproxylic insects represent an important part of forest biodiversity and have functionally significant role in the forest ecosystems. They are species-rich organisms that depend upon the dead or dying wood or upon the presence of other saproxylic species. In this study we investigated whether stump harvesting affects saproxylic beetle assemblages in the clear-cut of managed forest in Latvia. We used pitfall traps and window traps for sampling beetles in the clear-cut sites with removed and retained stumps. Overall, these two sampling sites shared a similar number of beetle species. However, there were significant differences between two sampling methods with more species from window traps. Saproxylic species were more abundant in site with retained stumps. The beetles were collected from 2015 to 2017 in different forest habitats, using flight interception traps, pitfall traps, color pan traps as well as selective hand catching methods (sifting, netting, beating), The species list comprises 546 species (with a total of 5.749 specimens) including 215 saproxylic beetle species (2.986 specimens). 117 species are first records for the Principality of Liechtenstein whereas 21 species are new for the fauna of Vorarlberg. Overall 106 species are listed in one of the red list categories. Some remarkable deadwood specialists such as Dorcatoma lomnickii, Ceruchus chrysomelinus, Tragosoma depsarium, Ernobius explanatus, Lamprodila decipiens, Hylis procerulus and Atrecus longiceps emphasise the significance of the study site as a refuge for a threatened ecological keystone community.
