Guide to the Flora of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia, Working Draft of 17 March 2004 -- LILIACEAE LILIACEAE de Jussieu 1789 (Lily Family) (also see AGAVACEAE, ALLIACEAE, ALSTROEMERIACEAE, AMARYLLIDACEAE, ASPARAGACEAE, COLCHICACEAE, HEMEROCALLIDACEAE, HOSTACEAE, HYACINTHACEAE, HYPOXIDACEAE, MELANTHIACEAE, NARTHECIACEAE, RUSCACEAE, SMILACACEAE, THEMIDACEAE, TOFIELDIACEAE) As here interpreted narrowly, the Liliaceae constitutes about 11 genera and 550 species, of the Northern Hemisphere. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. NOTES ON FLORIDA'S ENDANGERED AND THREATENED PLANTS 1 Nancy C. Coile2 The Regulated Plant Index is based on information provided by the Endangered Plant Advisory Council (EPAC), a group of seven individuals who represent academic, industry, and environmental interests (Dr. Loran C. Anderson, Dr. Daniel F. Austin,. Mr. Charles D. D aniel III, Mr. David M . Drylie, Jr., Ms. Eve R. Hannahs, Mr. Richard L. Moyroud, and Dr. Daniel B. Ward). Rule Chap. 5B-40, Florida Administrative Code, contains the "Regulated Plant Index" (5B-40.0055) and lists endangered, threatened, and commercially exploited plant species for Florida; defines the categories; lists instances where permits may be issued; and describes penalties for vio lations. Copies of this Rule may be obtained from Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry, P. O. Box 147100, Gainesville, Fl 32614-7100. Amended 20 September 2000, the "Regulated Plant Index" contains 415 endangered species, 113 threatened species, and eight commercially exploited species. Descriptions of these rare species are often difficult to locate. Florida does not have a single manual covering the flora of the entire state. Long and Lakela s manual (1971) focuses on the area south of Glades County; Clewell (1985) is a guide for the Panhandle; and Wunderlin (1998) is a guide for the entire state of Florida but lacks descriptions. Small (1933) is an excellent resource, but must be used with great care since the nomenclature is outdated and frequently disputed. Clewell (1985) and Wunderlin (1998 ) are guides with keys to the flora, but lack species descriptions. Distribution maps (Wund erlin and Hansen, 200 0) are available over the Internet through the University of South Florida Herbarium [www.plantatlas.usf.edu/]. -

Weaver, Jr., and Patti J. Anderson A vital role of the Division of Plant Industry, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, is the regulation of the endangered, threatened and commercially exploited plants of Florida. Rule 5B‐40, Florida Administrative Code, includes the Regulated Plant Index (included in the appendix), which defines the categories of regulated plants in the state and lists the species in each category. Additions, deletions and other changes to the Index are made by the Endangered Plant Advisory Council (EPAC), a board of seven professionals who meet once a year at minimum. This compendium provides vital information on all of the plant species and illustrates a number of them. The present edition represents a significant departure in format from the previous four editions, which were authored by Botanist Emeritus Nancy C. Coile with the help of Botanist Mark A. Garland in edition 4. The new format will easily allow for future changes. In this edition, 440 species are listed as endangered, a change from 431 included in the 4th edition. We list 117 threatened species, rather than 113, but the number of commercially exploited species remains constant at eight. A summary of the newly listed species and those that changed from one category to another is included in the appendix. The species are segregated by category: endangered, threatened and commercially exploited. They are arranged alphabetically by Latin name in each category. -

Bridges Botanical and Ecological Consultant, 7752 Holly Tree Place NW, Bremerton, WA 98312-1063 [email protected] ABSTRACT Floristic composition of the Florida dry prairie landscape was compiled from 291 sites in nine south-central peninsular counties. Floristic lists were based upon field inventory and compilation from reliable sources to- taling 11,250 site and community type-specific observations and were analyzed by region (Kissimmee River, Desoto/Glades “Big Prairie,” and Myakka). The known vascular flora consists of 658 vascular plant taxa, rep- resenting 317 genera and 115 families. Families with the highest number of species are Poaceae (103), Asteraceae (78), Cyperaceae (76), Fabaceae (23), Scrophulariaceae (20), and Orchidaceae (18). The most diverse genera are Rhynchospora (29), Dichanthelium (17), Ludwigia (13), Xyris (12), and Andropogon (11). Of this flora 24 taxa are endemic to central or southern peninsular Florida, primarily within the pine savanna- flatwood/dry prairie landscape, and 41 taxa are of Floridian biotic affinity. Although most species are not re- gionally specific, a few (Carphephorus carnosus, Ctenium aromaticum, and Liatris spicata) appear to be ab- sent from the Myakka prairie region, while Marshallia tenuifolia appears to be absent from both the Desoto/ Glades and Myakka prairie regions. Within the dry prairie landscape Hypericum edisonianum is restricted to the Desoto/Glades region. A few other species somewhat differentiate between prairie regions; however, most occur in other habitats in the counties where they are absent or nearly absent from dry prairie. -

Cutthroat Grass Communities utthroat grass (Panicum abscissum) is a central FNAI Global Rank: G2 peninsular Florida endemic species, found in FNAI State Rank: S2 Cscattered locations from Orange County south to Federally Listed Species in S. FL: 1 Palm Beach County. However, it seems to dominate natural State Listed Species in S. FL: 13 communities almost exclusively within Polk and Highlands counties, in association with the sideslopes of Cutthroat grass community. the central Florida Ridges. Cutthroat grass communities are Original photograph by Betty Wargo. mostly associated with areas of slight to strong groundwater seepage; however, not all cutthroat grass communities are well-developed seepage slopes. Cutthroat grass communities fall into several community types-a cutthroat grass seepage slope complex with 11 microhabitat zones, cutthroat grass mesic flatwoods and dry prairies, cutthroat grass wet flatwoods, cutthroat grass depression marsh margins, cutthroat grass ecotones between flatwoods and drainageways, cutthroat grass wet prairies, and slash pine/cutthroat grass basin swamp. Each of these can be characterized by differences in landform, topographic position, hydrology, soils, and dominant or characteristic plant species. The cutthroat grass seepage slope complex consists of distinct vegetation zones which vary in hydrology, soils, and species composition, ranging from dry cutthroat grass with only subsurface soil saturation, to mixed herbaceous seepage slopes with a constant year-round water table at the surface of the deep muck soil. Cutthroat grass communities require frequent fire for maintenance of the open, graminoid-dominated character of these areas. The greatest threats to the integrity of cutthroat grass communities are continued fire-suppression and drainage effects. -

As the development and use of steamboats along the Mississippi River increased, travel on the Trace diminished and the route began to be reclaimed by nature. A renewed interest in the Trace began during, and following, the Great Depression. In the early 1930’s, then Mississippi congressman T. J. Busby promoted interest in the Trace from a historical perspective and also as an opportunity for employment in the area. Legislation was introduced by Busby to conduct a survey of the Trace and in 1936 actual construction of the modern roadway began. Development of the present Natchez Trace Parkway (NATR) which follows portions of the original route has continued since that time. The last segment of the NATR was completed in 2005. The federal lands that comprise the modern route total about 52,000 acres in 25 counties through the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The route, about 445 miles long, is a manicured parkway with numerous associated rest stops, parks, and monuments. Current land use along the NATR includes upland forest, mesic prairie, wetland prairie, forested wetlands, interspersed with numerous small agricultural croplands.
