Department of Geography and Regional Planning, Igbinedion University Okada, Edo State Abstract This research gives an overview of the human adjustment strategies to flooding in Ndokwa East Local Government Area. This study examined the causes, effects and human adjustment techniques with a view to address effective floodplain management that can reduce vulnerability to damages and create a balance among natural and human uses of floodplains and their related watersheds to meet both social and environmental goals. Meteorological data (rainfall 1971-2012) collected from Nigeria Metrological Station (NIMET), Asaba, and complemented with participatory observation methods such as direct field observation and interview schedule through the use of questionnaire survey. The result of the findings shows that flooding was a serious seasonal environmental problem caused by abnormally high rainfall in 2012 which was 5% - 60% higher than the previous year’s monthly rainfalls. This led to overflow of the River Niger. Other anthropogenetic factors were also contributory to the extent of the flooding. The effects of the hazard range from loss of property, farmland pollution, health hazards, suspension of business activities, and displacement of the occupants. The study also revealed that the residents were ignorant of adjustments strategies resulting from overflow of a river. The result of the study implies that the problem is enormous and the occupants lack the technical capability to resolve it due to paucity of climatic data and the technical expertise.

Edewor* Department of Sociology, Covenant University, P.M.B. 1023, Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria *E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The labour value of children has been considered one of the benefits of children especially in agrarian pre- transitional societies. This labour value of children was, among other things, one of the reasons for having large families in these societies. The traditional value of children is undergoing changes with consequences for fertility attitudes and preferences. This paper examines how socio-economic change, especially the advent of schooling, has affected children's participation in agriculture as well as the changing role of children. It is based on information generated from Focus Group Discussions conducted among men and women in two urban and four rural communities in the two Local Government Areas occupied by Isoko people of Delta State, Nigeria. It was observed that schooling has contributed to the decline in the labour value of children in the study area. In parental calculations, this decline and the higher costs of child rearing are counterbalanced by the benefits they would reap from their educated children in future. Adult children’s contributions to parents’ farming are becoming mainly monetary. They occasionally make remittances to their parents for their upkeep and also for hiring labourers to work on the farm. Farming is perceived by parents as a profession that entails much drudgery and associated with poverty.

    NGO DONATES LIVELIHOOD RECOVERY ITEMS TO FLOOD VICTIMS In order to avert famine following the recent flood that devastated farming and rendered many farmers homeless in Delta State, a non-governmental organization, Niger Delta Professionals for Development (NIDPRODEV) through funding from Oxfam Novib, Netherlands has brought succor to farmers in four communities in Isoko South Local Government Area affected by the recent flood. The donations included thousands of improved cassava stems, herbicides, knapsack sprayers, nose masks, fish fingerlings and fertilizers. NIDPRODEV has also carried out soil assessment in these communities to determine soil fertility and quality after the flood in order to ensure that farmers receive all of the necessary inputs to grow quality crops. Making the donation to the people of Enhwe, Uzere, Aviara and Idheze communities, Mr. Jerry Nwigwe and Ms. Ifeoma Olisakwe of NIDPRODEV as well as Mr. Austin Terngu of Oxfam Novib, informed the people that the gesture was part of their humanitarian effort aimed to alleviate some of the hardship that farmers in the area are currently experiencing. The efforts of these two organizations are partly through livelihood recovery items as the flood has devastated their sources of livelihood and reduce crop yield. The representatives from these organizations pledged the continuous assistance to the communities in this planting season and urged the people to work hard to ensure that they make optimum use of the items.Representatives of the communities who received the items on behalf of the people, Mr Oghomu Samson (Enhwe) and Mr Akasi Festus (Uzere), conveyed the pleasure of the people to the NIDPRODEV and Oxfam Novib and promised that the farmers would make good use of the items.

ABSTRACT: The rural areas in Nigeria are worse hit by poverty which is a ban on the standard of living on the people. Fluted Pumpkin (TelfariaOccidentalis) is a crop produced for the economic importance of its leaves, fruits, seeds to the citizenry. This study therefore sought to examine the Resource-Use Efficiency of Fluted Pumpkin (TelfariaOccidentalis) Production as aid to poverty alleviation in Isoko South Local Government Area, South-South part of Nigeria. Cross-sectional data were obtained through well structure questionnaire administered to 60 fluted pumpkin farmers drawn using simple random sampling technique from the study area during the 2015 production season. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, poverty line analysis, efficiency ratio analysis, and a 3-Point Likert Scale Rating. Results showed that majority (40%) of the respondents were within the age bracket of 31>40 years, with mean age of 38.9years while 66.7% of the respondents were females. 53.3% had farming experience of 1-5years, with mean value of 4.88years. 58.3% had 1-4 persons in their household size, with mean value of 4 persons.

    12 IS OZORO AND UZERE CLANS’ TRADITIONS OF ORIGIN EDOID OR IGBOID? U. B. Okpevra Department of History and International Studies, Delta State University, Abraka Nigeria. Abstract The bulk of the Isoko people subscribe largely to Benin/Edoid origin with claims that they came from Benin through primary and secondary migrations in their stories of migrations and traditions of origin. This work presents an analytical exposition and re-interpretation of the traditions of origin of some Isoko clans/kingdoms against the background of the hitherto perception and ingrained and extant belief of the Isoko-Benin connexion over the years. Intrinsic is the analysis made to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the Benin ancestry/Edoid origin of the clans of Ozoro, Uzere, Enwhe/Okpolo and Igbide as case studies. Nevertheless, available evidence points to Igboid origin of the above Isoko clans. Keywords: Ozoro, Uzere, Edoid, Igboid, Tradition Introduction History has it that, after the Ogiso, Urhobo land and other areas (Isoko land), it would imply, continued to gain mixed migrants who were traders, warriors and escapees from “Benin” justice and injustice especially during the latter fascist phase of Oba Ewuare as well as the second republican period (1480-1483).1 In this light one can suggest that these later immigrants, who are now being considered as the progenitors of the Isoko people and indeed these waves of migration from Benin, may not be what resulted in the initial founding of the Isoko clans. These impacts affect poor people’s lives through impacts on livelihoods and destruction of homes. In Delta State, the impacts of climate change are real. Adaptation has been identified as the key to reducing the impacts of climate change. However, successful adaptation depends on use of climate services. While climate services are essential to adaptation, the services do not always reach the users who need it most. This paper analyses factors influencing access and utilization of climate services in Delta state, Nigeria. The paper utilized the survey research while data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings show low utilization of climate service. The determinants of access and utilization of climate services include income, educational attainments, access to ICT facilities, extension agents and the level of local climate variability. The paper calls for awareness creation on the importance of climate services.
