CHAPTER ONE GENERAL INTRODUCTION 1.0 Background to the Study Acts of conflict and violence occur daily in different parts of the world. This is due to a variety of motives, which include political fanaticism, ethnic hatred, religious extremism and ideological differences. Conflict is perennial and an ingredient towards the actualization of individual and group interests. According to S.A. Ayinla, it is a natural announcement of an impending re-classification of a society with changed characteristics and goals and with new circumstances of survival and continuity1. Conflict is a universal human experience. Its origin and nature are best explained within the framework of human nature and environment in which man lives2.Conflicts and violence are common factors in both secular and sacred institutions. In spite of the fact that the church is believed to be a holy institution ordained by God, she has never at any time outgrown conflicts and violence. This is due to the fact that, the affairs of the church are administered by human beings who are not always perfect or faultless. By 1975, the Warri Diocese, Anglican Communion, had not existed as a corporate Christian entity. O & Onwudiwe, Elizabeth O Department of Agricultural Education Federal College of Education (Tech), Asaba, Nigeria *Corresponding Author: [email protected]; 0815592500 ABSTRACT This study was carried out to famers’ socio-economic characteristics, cost and return of catfish farming in Delta North Agricultural Zone of Delta State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study described the socioeconomics characteristics of catfish farmers and determined the cost structure and returns of catfish farming. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select 240 catfish farmers. Primary data were used for the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and gross margin analysis were used to achieve the objectives while ANOVA was used to test the hypothesis. The result of the study revealed that 75.84% of the fish farmers were males while females constituted 24.16%. Total cost, total revenue, mean gross margin and mean net profit realized from catfish production in the study area were ₦2,505,128.58, ₦2,670,133.33, ₦725,213.08 and ₦165,004.75 respectively. The return on investment (ROI) for the study area was N1.07: N1. The study concluded that catfish farming was profitable in the study area. The study recommended among others that the farmers should be trained on how to formulate their own feed especially with cheaper feed components to reduce the cost of feed in catfish farming operations Keywords: catfish farming, technical efficiency, , cost and returns INTRODUCTION In Africa, the governments of the continent under the tutelage of the African Union, have identified the great potential of fish farming and are determined to encourage private sector investment (NEPAD, 2005).

The major source of data is secondary and the statistical technique is the step-wise multiple regression. The household income was used as an index of development while the socio-economic variables included population, education, and employment, capital water projects, housing unit, health centres, industries and police station. Four key socio-economic variables of population, health centres, employment and capital water projects were identified as being responsible for 80% of the variation in the development of Delta state of Nigeria among other variables. Solutions to identified problems were proffered. Keywords: Socio Economic, Development Delta, Introduction There is no single agreed definition of economic development. Abstract To achieve this, a geophysical study is necessary in Oleh. Vertical Electrical Sounding using Schlumberger arrangement Hence the study was carried out not only to reveal the depth, was carried out in Oleh Community not only to assess the thickness of the aquifer and the lithological set up at Oleh groundwater potential but determine the vulnerability of the Community but evaluate the aquifer protective capacity of the overburdened aquifer and hence establish areas having high overlying formations and determine areas boreholes could be potential for appreciable and sustainable groundwater supply. sited for potable and sustainable water supply. Fourteen (14) stations were established and surveyed using a maximum current electrode separation of 300.00 m. The field LOCATION OF THE STUDY AREA (OLEH) data obtained was first analyzed by curve matching before computer iteration. The result showed that apart from the Oleh is located in Isoko South Local Government Area of 0 1 11 locations in VES 5, 6, 7 and 11 that has shallow aquifer and Delta State, Nigeria. ORIGINAL RESEARCH PAPER Volume-8 | Issue-4 | April-2019 | PRINT ISSN No 2277 - 8179 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACCESSIBILITY AND THE PROVISION OF PUBLIC FACILITIES IN DELTA STATE, NIGERIA (1976-2016): A NEXUS Geography Ph.D. Department of Geography and Regional Planning, Delta State University, Abraka - Atubi Nigeria Augustus Ph.D. Department of Geography and Regional Planning, Delta State University, Abraka - Orowhigo* Nigeria *Corresponding Author ABSTRACT The need for this research is based on the understanding that location of public facilities cannot be properly done without reference to their accessibility by users. It is in recognition of the need for access to facilities that various measures or re-organisations have taken place in Delta State. The data collected for the period between 1976 and 2016, were based on government documents. A classication of 50 sampled settlements, called centres, is rst developed based on population size. By means of graph theory, the complex network of roads is abstracted into set of nodes and edges. These nodes were subsequently weighted according to their number and functions. Also, the Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefcient was employed as well as the students 't' test. The analysis reveals a certain pattern of association. That the high correlation coefcient between specialist hospitals and post secondary institutions (r = 0.60) does not mean that occurrence of a hospital, necessarily lead to the occurrence of post – secondary institutions, but it does imply that both tend to be located in the same place within the study area. On the basis of the ndings of this study recommendations were suggested on how to improve accessibility and promote the equitable provision of public facilities in Delta State, Nigeria.

  • Human Adjustments to Flood Hazards in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State
IOSR Journal of Environmental Science, Toxicology and Food Technology (IOSR-JESTFT) e-ISSN: 2319-2402,p- ISSN: 2319-2399.Volume 15, Issue 4 Ser. I (April 2021), PP 19-27 www.iosrjournals.org Human Adjustments to Flood Hazards in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State. Ekuase I.O and Mogekwu C. Department of Geography and Regional Planning, Igbinedion University Okada, Edo State Abstract This research gives an overview of the human adjustment strategies to flooding in Ndokwa East Local Government Area. This study examined the causes, effects and human adjustment techniques with a view to address effective floodplain management that can reduce vulnerability to damages and create a balance among natural and human uses of floodplains and their related watersheds to meet both social and environmental goals. Meteorological data (rainfall 1971-2012) collected from Nigeria Metrological Station (NIMET), Asaba, and complemented with participatory observation methods such as direct field observation and interview schedule through the use of questionnaire survey. The result of the findings shows that flooding was a serious seasonal environmental problem caused by abnormally high rainfall in 2012 which was 5% - 60% higher than the previous year’s monthly rainfalls. This led to overflow of the River Niger. Other anthropogenetic factors were also contributory to the extent of the flooding. The effects of the hazard range from loss of property, farmland pollution, health hazards, suspension of business activities, and displacement of the occupants. The study also revealed that the residents were ignorant of adjustments strategies resulting from overflow of a river. The result of the study implies that the problem is enormous and the occupants lack the technical capability to resolve it due to paucity of climatic data and the technical expertise.
