COLONIALISM, URBANISATION AND THE GROWTH OF ONITSHA, 1857-1960 *Mmesoma N. Umeagudosi and Amarachi C. Obidiaju Abstract There is no gainsaying that colonialism changed the patterns of urbanisation in Africa. What this means is that there were existing patterns of urbanisation in most African communities before colonial incursions and these have inspired scholarly researches of various depth and volumes. Considering an identified problem in African historiography, which tends to give minimal attention to the exigencies that led to changes in patterns of urbanisation in particular African communities, this paper adopts the historical research method, with effective use of primary, secondary and tertiary sources of data that were subjected to qualitative interpretation, to document and analyse the processes of urbanisation in Africa since colonial incursion, with the commercial city of Onitsha as a study area. The study observes that urbanisation in Onitsha was not necessarily an impact of colonialism. Instead, the colonial administration only effected changes on the pattern of urbanisation in the city. Such changes were precipitated by the colonial economic policies, which among other things, used the inland waterways as effective transport facility for primary produce extracted from the various produce centres around the Niger River. However, other factors of change encouraged rapid urbanisation of Onitsha during colonialism in Nigeria. A conspicuous factor is colonial administrative measures, which saw to the establishment of Onitsha

EDITORIAL 123 the term "specific" may be applied. Mani claims to this title have been put forward in the past 'but further experience has not confirmed these assertions. '1 he new form of treatment with diphtheria Formol-Toxoid recounted in the paper by Collier and McKean is descnb ed modestly and without making any ambitious claims. Fallacies are common in estimating the value of any treatment in leprosy. Signs of clinicaI improvement are particularly unreliable, and even clearing up of positive bacteriological findings may be dependent on seasonal and other temporary causes. Time must therefore be given to assess these various factors before judgment is passed. Already arrangements are being made in several different centres throughout the world to test out this treatment. We trust that the eperience of others will confirm the results of the workers in Siam. Of almost equal interest are the animal inoculation experiments described in another paper. The fact that leprosy, unlike tuber culosis, is confined to the human race has limited our knowledge and handicapped our attempts at treatment and control. If these therapeutic and experimental results are substantiated they may have far-reaching results not only in leprosy but also possibly in other diseases. Sedimentation method was used in analyzing the urine samples and combi-9 test strips were used in testing for haematuria, the stool samples were parasitologically analyzed using the formal ether technique. A total of six hundred and twenty samples were collected from the pupils which include 310 urine samples and 310 stool samples. Out of the 310 urine samples examined, 139 (44.84%) were infected with urinary schistosomiasis, while out of 310 stool samples examined, 119 (38.39%) were infected with intestinal schistosomiasis. By carrying out the statistical analysis, it was found that urinary schistosomiasis is significantly higher at (p<0.05) than intestinal schistosomiasis. Children between 12-14 years were the most infected with both urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis with prevalence of 45 (14.84%) and 48 (15.48%), respectively, while children between 3-5 years were the least infected with both urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis 30 (9.68%) and 25 (8.06%), respectively.

N. Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State Nigeria Email: [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT The proximate and mineral composition of three varieties of mushroom consumed in Amaifeke, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State were evaluated. The mushroom species include white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus ), oyster mushroom ( Pleurotus ostreatus ), Crimini mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ). The mushroom varieties were harvested and dried, then taken to the laboratory for proximate, mineral and vitamin analysis. Standard assay methods were used to analyze for proximate and mineral composition. Proximate composition of the mushroom was found to be in the range of 3.29 – 5.24% for moisture content, 8.60 – 22.60% for protein, 6.85 – 7.54% for fat, 7.94 – 18.63% for fibre, 2.99 – 4.74% for ash and 59.67 – 60.60% for carbohydrate. Six mineral elements were analysed: selenium, iron, zinc, iodine, potassium and copper, having values of 3.04 -6.56mg/100g, 1.532 – 2.378mg/100g, 2.70 – 3.90mg/100g, 0.348 – 0.425mg/100g, 0.8079 – 2.4615% and 0.586 – 0.784mg/100g respectively. Based on the result the mushroom have high nutrient potentials hence it will serve as a good means of reducing the incidence and high prevalence of malnutrition in Nigeria since it is a cheap food source that is within the reach of the poor.

  • Antinutrient Profile of Three Mushroom Varieties Consumed in Amaifeke, Orlu, Imo State
Food Science and Quality Management www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-6088 (Paper) ISSN 2225-0557 (Online) Vol.32, 2014 Antinutrient Profile of Three Mushroom Varieties Consumed in Amaifeke, Orlu, Imo State OLY-ALAWUBA, N. OBIAKOR - OKEKE, P. N. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Science Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria Email: [email protected] ; [email protected] Abstract Background: The importance of eliminating or minimizing antinutrients from foods human consume cannot be overemphasized. This study evaluated the antinutrient profile of three varieties of mushroom consumed in Amaifeke, Orlu, Imo State were determined. The mushroom species include white button mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ), oyster mushroom ( Pleurotus ostreatus ), Crimini mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ). Methods: The mushroom varieties were harvested and dried, after which, they were taken to the laboratory for chemical analysis. Standard assay methods were used to analyze for antinutrient composition. Result: Six anti-nutrients: hydrogen cyanide, saponin, phytate, oxalate, trypsin inhibitor and haemogglutinin were analysed and their values ranged from 0.198 – 0.236mg/g, 0.6656 – 1.001mg/g, 0.7794 -1.558mg/100g, 0.236 – 0.510%, 1.857 – 3.476TIµ/mg, 1.350 – 2.899Hµ/mg respectively. Conclusion: Based on the result of the study, it is important that these mushrooms be properly processed so that the nutrients in them will not be rendered inaccessible by the body due to the presence of these antinutrients. Keywords: Antinutrient, Mushroom, Consumed, Amaifeke Introduction Antinutrients are natural or synthetic compounds that interfere with the absorption of nutrients (1). Plant foods may contain significant amounts of toxic or antinutritional substances, legumes are particularly rich source of natural toxicants including protease inhibitors, amylase inhibitors, metal chelates, flatus factors, hemagglutinins, saponins, cyanogens, lathyrogens, tannins, allergens, acetylenic furan and isoflavonoidphytoalexins (2).
