Irish responses to Fascist Italy, 1919–1932 by Mark Phelan A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Supervisor: Prof. Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh Department of History School of Humanities National University of Ireland, Galway December 2012 ABSTRACT This project assesses the impact of the first fascist power, its ethos and propaganda, on key constituencies of opinion in the Irish Free State. Accordingly, it explores the attitudes, views and concerns expressed by members of religious organisations; prominent journalists and academics; government officials/supporters and other members of the political class in Ireland, including republican and labour activists. By contextualising the Irish response to Fascist Italy within the wider patterns of cultural, political and ecclesiastical life in the Free State, the project provides original insights into the configuration of ideology and social forces in post-independence Ireland. Structurally, the thesis begins with a two-chapter account of conflicting confessional responses to Italian Fascism, followed by an analysis of diplomatic intercourse between Ireland and Italy. Next, the thesis examines some controversial policies pursued by Cumann na nGaedheal, and assesses their links to similar Fascist initiatives. The penultimate chapter focuses upon the remarkably ambiguous attitude to Mussolini’s Italy demonstrated by early Fianna Fáil, whilst the final section recounts the intensely hostile response of the Irish labour movement, both to the Italian regime, and indeed to Mussolini’s Irish apologists.

CATHOLICS UNITED FOR THE FAITH 85882 Water Works Rd. Hopedale, OH 43976 St. Joseph Foundation The Death Penalty: On the Changes Made to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 2267 In a 1 August 2018 document styled, Letter to the Bishops Regarding the New Revision of Number 2267 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on the Death Penalty, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) announced that Pope Francis approved a change to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (Catechism). The CDF published the text of the change the same day. The change reflects the Pope’s presentation on the death penalty. On 2 August 2018, a very broad segment of Catholic and secular news outlets in the United States published articles and commentary on the change. The news precipitated a large number of responses from a wide spectrum of organizations. Many of the responses and comments focus on the doctrinal weight of the change or the authority of the Pope to proscribe doctrine. The change has caused confusion. Both Catholics United for the Faith (CUF) and The Saint Joseph Foundation (SJF) have received many questions on the matter and requests for clarification. The issue continues to be a topic of discussion on a wide variety of professional gatherings and social media platforms. CUF and SJF present the following response in hopes of advancing a proper understanding of the situation, encouraging more fruitful discussions, and offering answers to specific questions already posed. Context Before one can understand the impact of the change, one must understand several points regarding authority in the Catholic Church and how doctrines and disciplines are developed.

  • The Origin and Nature of the State in Francisco De Vitoria's
The Origin and Nature of the State in Francisco de Vitoria’s Moral Philosophy El origen y la naturaleza del Estado en la filosofía moral de Francisco de Vitoria 1Luis Valenzuela-Vermehren* Universidad Católica de Temuco - Chile Abstract Sixteenth-century Spanish thought is constitutive of an established, though insuf- ficiently studied, tradition of European political theorizing. As against the politics of Machiavellism, the Spanish tradition argued in favor of an ethical perspective on statecraft. As an introduction to the subject, this article addresses key concepts set forth by the Dominican theologian-jurist Francisco de Vitoria regarding the natural foundations and teleology of the state and its coercive power. Terms such as “natural law”, “dominium”, and “perfect community” describe the Thomistic basis of his political philosophy and illustrate the moral significance and legitimate basis of political society in early modern Spanish politico-theological thought. Keywords: F. de Vitoria, catholic theology, natural law, political theory, spanish political philosophy, Thomism.

  • Rosmini on Individual Rights: the Soul (Reason) As Forerunner of Individual Rights in Human Society
Vol. 2, No. 3 Journal of Politics and Law Rosmini on Individual Rights: The Soul (Reason) as Forerunner of Individual Rights in Human Society Nico P. Swartz Faculty of Law. Dept. Roman Law, UFS, PO Box 339, Bloemfontein 9300. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The question that can be asked today is: Of what relevance is Rosmini’s legal theory on individual rights for modern man? Rosmini’s individual rights did not appear from nowhere. From the opinions of some Greek writers, he concluded that the soul, as a result of its immortal and mobile qualities, is divine in nature and therefore serves as the origin of individual rights. Rosmini is of the opinion, unlike Thomas Aquinas, that the protection of individual rights should filter through to all levels of human existence; from the foetal stage to adult life. In contrast with the Aristotelian Thomistic hylomorphism doctrine, he believes that just like an adult, a foetus has a soul, even in its early stages, and is entitled to the protection of his/her individual rights. This is the basis of the Constitution of South Africa 108 of 1996. Owing to the innate nature of the human soul, Rosmini succeeded in postulating God as ontological framework for the individual rights of man. The description of the unique value of humans in Psalm 8:5 is striking: “For thou hast made him but little lower than God, and crownest him with glory and honor.” (American Standard Version) Man, as image bearer of God, is thus endowed with individual rights that must be recognised by all, including the state.

  • Custom in Francisco Suárez's De Lege Non Scripta
CUSTOM IN FRANCISCO SUÁREZ’S DE LEGE NON SCRIPTA. BETWEEN FACTUALITY AND THE LEGAL REALM Dominique Bauera Fechas de recepción y aceptación: 17 de noviembre de 2014, 26 de febrero de 2015 Resumen: En este artículo se analizan algunos aspectos particulares del trata- miento de la costumbre en el séptimo libro, De lege non scripta, de De legibus de Francisco Suárez, más especialmente en los cap. I y IX. The author of this creation denies the claims of catholic authority for political mastery in society. He considers that only the strong state and «Priest Roman Empire» hea- ded by the king Lyudovic IV Bavarian, first of all, can introduce peace into disunity Middle Age Europe. Subjecting papacy’s teachings and policy to the criticism Mar- cilia suggests reformation of state and church relations by limiting social functions and powers of priests. The main role, to his opinion, must be given to the landed gentry who could be elected by local believers. Priests must become the handhold of state power acting under the law. Together with it the state power must built a new model of law-making allowing all citizens to participate in law creation. Large democratic potential of the thinker’s creation is in his longing to separate legisla- tive and executive branch. Marcilia suggests to elect the governor for a definite term of office that has been unbelievable for Middle Age. Such Marcilia’s from Pa- dua opinion determined at large that time and became the premises for teachings of the later educational and church reformers of the sixteenth-eighteenth centuries.

  • The Price of Battling Paedophilia
“United in Truth” Submission IGFA with MVC 2012 Appendix 16 Page 1 The price of battling paedophilia Barney Zwartz Published: September 17, 2012 - 3:00AM GRAEME Sleeman knew Peter Searson was trouble even before Searson arrived as parish priest of Doveton in 1984. Searson liked to dress in military fatigues, often carried a revolver, and had a bad reputation when it came to money - and sexually abusing children. The two locked horns immediately when Sleeman, principal of the Holy Family school, told the priest he knew of his reputation and would be watching him, and Searson replied that as priest he was the boss. Their main battleground was bizarre: the sacred Catholic sacrament of confession, where Searson could get the children alone and unsupervised. "I was concerned about his addiction to confession," Sleeman recalls. "Sometimes he would get children to sit on his lap, or kneel between his legs." Later he would help a church investigation into two sexual assaults during confession. Sleeman was a respected educator and a devout Catholic. The latter cost him his career, his health and economic security for his family, as he sought to protect the children under his charge from a predatory priest while also trying to protect the good name of the church. When Sleeman resigned as principal in 1986 in a vain bid to force the church and Catholic Education Office (CEO) to act against Searson, he was besieged by media wanting to know about the priest's behaviour. But he stayed silent, even in later job interviews, when his refusal to explain his departure worked against him.
