Walsh, Ph.D. This dissertation concerns John Finnis’s interpretation of St. Thomas Aquinas’s understanding of the political common good. Finnis is the most influential natural law theorist in the English speaking world today. His natural law theory has sought to respond to modern critics of natural law theory and be identifiably Thomistic at the same time. In order to ground his theory in the thought of Aquinas, Finnis produced an interpretive work on Aquinas’s political thought, reconciling Aquinas’s understanding of the common good with his own views. Nevertheless, his interpretation of Aquinas’s political thought has been controversial, especially his interpretation of Aquinas’s understanding of the political common good. Finnis’s interpretation of Aquinas is shaped by his method of approaching politics through practical reason. He almost completely excludes consideration of the role that metaphysics and theology play in Aquinas’s political thought until his final chapter. As a result, the relationships between practical philosophy, metaphysics, and theology in Aquinas’s political thought are not fully articulated. Finnis claims that Aquinas believed that the political common good is limited and instrumental to fostering the justice and peace that individuals and families need in order to pursue what he calls the basic goods. But Aquinas believed that the political common good is to make men virtuous, which is conducive to happiness, and disposes them to contemplation. Finnis argues that positive law promotes virtue only to the extent that it is necessary to secure justice and peace. But Aquinas believed that law promotes natural virtue, which disposes man to receive supernatural virtue. Human beings have a natural inclination to live in society, but not to life in specifically political community, according to Finnis. He says that for Aquinas, man is more naturally a familial or social animal than a political animal. But Aquinas says that man is a political animal, probably because the fullest range of virtues are available to man in political community. The political common good is therefore basic and good in itself. This dissertation by Patrick B. Accordingly, it explores the attitudes, views and concerns expressed by members of religious organisations; prominent journalists and academics; government officials/supporters and other members of the political class in Ireland, including republican and labour activists. By contextualising the Irish response to Fascist Italy within the wider patterns of cultural, political and ecclesiastical life in the Free State, the project provides original insights into the configuration of ideology and social forces in post-independence Ireland. Structurally, the thesis begins with a two-chapter account of conflicting confessional responses to Italian Fascism, followed by an analysis of diplomatic intercourse between Ireland and Italy. Next, the thesis examines some controversial policies pursued by Cumann na nGaedheal, and assesses their links to similar Fascist initiatives. The penultimate chapter focuses upon the remarkably ambiguous attitude to Mussolini’s Italy demonstrated by early Fianna Fáil, whilst the final section recounts the intensely hostile response of the Irish labour movement, both to the Italian regime, and indeed to Mussolini’s Irish apologists.

    Philosophy and Humanities LT 502 - Elementary Latin II (3) Students advance to the more complex syntax and irregular morphology of classical Latin as well as to the rudiments of rhetorical stylistics. Tools of historical linguistics are introduced so that students can master the changes in orthography that occur to the language between the classical and medieval period. PH 512 - Medieval Philosophy (3) In this course students will read important philosophic works by medieval authors as well as some historical and critical studies by more recent writers. St. Thomas Aquinas will receive special attention. The aim will be to bring medieval philosophers to light and to see the continuing relevance of the issues they raised and the answers they proposed. PH 514 - Recent Philosophy (3) This course appraises the various intellectual developments that emerged in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries – an era that has been marked by a declining confidence in achievements of systematic achievements of philosophical reasoning. It begins with a careful overview of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, perhaps one of the last works in the Western canon to offer a synoptic overview of human experience and knowledge. Though generally rejected in its scope and organization, a number of its chapters have served as the basis of some of the particular problems that have drawn the attention of later thinkers. Thus, this course proceeds with the study of various philosophical movements of later modernity which include: Existentialism, Phenomenology, Analytical Philosophy, Hermeneutics, Deconstructionism, Pragmatism. Concluding the historical survey of Western philosophy, it considers many of the same topics of inquiry, but does so, as the previous three historical courses, in the light of the various cultural and scientific factors that determine its context.

Simon on the Nature and Role of Moral Philosophy Ralph Nelson In the latter stage of modem philosophy in the nineteenth century, lead­ ing thinkers stated their intention to overcome an objectionable antinomy by somehow combining theory and practice. Hegel remained a notable excep­ tion to this trend when he insisted that the philosophic science of right, and the state, was theoretical. Once those who argued, in opposition, that the task of philosophers was to change, not merely interpret the world, it was the theory of practice that was paramount. Of course, there were those who sim­ ply would do away with theory altogether and adopt a kind of practicalism, but usually, as with the utilitarians and positivists, some kind of theory was still required even if the main direction was practical. Beckwith Department of Philosophy, Baylor University, Waco, TX 76710, USA; [email protected] Abstract: This article responds to four criticisms of the Catholic view of natural law: (1) it commits the naturalistic fallacy, (2) it makes divine revelation unnecessary, (3) it implausibly claims to establish a shared universal set of moral beliefs, and (4) it disregards the noetic effects of sin. Relying largely on the Church’s most important theologian on the natural law, St. Thomas Aquinas, the author argues that each criticism rests on a misunderstanding of the Catholic view. To accomplish this end, the author first introduces the reader to the natural law by way of an illustration he calls the “the ten (bogus) rules.” He then presents Aquinas’ primary precepts of the natural law and shows how our rejection of the ten bogus rules ultimately relies on these precepts (and inferences from them). In the second half of the article, he responds directly to each of the four criticisms.
