Invitation to Reggio Emilia A LAND OF FAMOUS PEOPLE Reggio Emilia and its territory is the birthplace of many who have distinguished themselves in various fields. To name a few: the poets Ludovico Ariosto and Matteo Maria Boiardo, the scientist Lazzaro Spallanzani, the painter Antonio Allegri known as “Correggio”, musicians and personalities engaged in culture like Romolo Valli, Serge Reggiani, Cesare Zavattini, the tenor Ferruccio Tagliavini, the mezzosoprano Sonia Ganassi, and the flutist Andrea Griminelli, politicians such as Giuseppe Dossetti, one of the fathers of the Italian Constitution, the former president of the European commission Romano Prodi and many others that would be impossible to list here. IN REGGIO EMILIA "GO TO CANOSSA" The expression “go to Canossa”, used in at least thirty national languages, originated from the historic meeting between Pope Gregorius VII and the excommunicated Emperor Henry IV of INVITATION Germany. The encounter took place in 1077 at Canossa, which was the most important castle in Reggio Emilia’s defensive TO REGGIO network. It was constructed by the powerful Countess Matilda.

  • Verdi's Rigoletto
Verdi’s Rigoletto - A discographical conspectus by Ralph Moore It is hard if not impossible, to make a representative survey of recordings of Rigoletto, given that there are 200 in the catalogue; I can only compromise by compiling a somewhat arbitrary list comprising of a selection of the best-known and those which appeal to me. For a start, there are thirty or so studio recordings in Italian; I begin with one made in 1927 and 1930, as those made earlier than that are really only for the specialist. I then consider eighteen of the studio versions made since that one. I have not reviewed minor recordings or those which in my estimation do not reach the requisite standard; I freely admit that I cannot countenance those by Sinopoli in 1984, Chailly in 1988, Rahbari in 1991 or Rizzi in 1993 for a combination of reasons, including an aversion to certain singers – for example Gruberova’s shrill squeak of a soprano and what I hear as the bleat in Bruson’s baritone and the forced wobble in Nucci’s – and the existence of a better, earlier version by the same artists (as with the Rudel recording with Milnes, Kraus and Sills caught too late) or lacklustre singing in general from artists of insufficient calibre (Rahbari and Rizzi). Nor can I endorse Dmitri Hvorostovsky’s final recording; whether it was as a result of his sad, terminal illness or the vocal decline which had already set in I cannot say, but it does the memory of him in his prime no favours and he is in any case indifferently partnered.

REGGIO EMILIA FOR EXPO MILANO 2015 Reggio Emilia, at the heart of Italy’s Food Valley , is a city that has a natural bent for international relations and dialogue. Reggio Emilia is the ideal region to find new opportunities to learn more, build and strengthen synergistic international partnerships with all the stakeholders who are aware of the cultural challenge that is the Expo Milano 2015, “ Feeding the planet, Energy for life ” – from May 1 to October 31, 2015. To celebrate the Expo, Reggio Emilia has come up with a complimentary range of events, places, companies, products, socialisation opportunities and tours for a first-hand experience of the region, and to form major international partnerships. Moreover Reggio Emilia’s institutions along with all economic players – Chamber of Commerce, trade associations, research centres and universities – have developed a number of ideas for tours and meetings with trade associations, businesses, innovation and research centres, to learn more about partnership and business opportunities and to boost the creation of strategic business relations. A HIGH-SPEED CITY Reggio Emilia is a special place for the people who will be taking part in or visiting the Expo Milano 2015 to stop and see, not least because of its high-speed “Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana” train station, one of the main high-speed stations in northern Italy and one of the most important junctions in the midst of the Po valley. Easily accessible from the old city centre (4 km) as well as from the motorway (2 km), the high-speed “Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana” train station is an architectural masterpiece designed by Santiago Calatrava , who also designed the three bridges that connect it to the motorway and to the city’s main thoroughfares.

  • Andrea Bocelli, a Modern Tenor in the Old Style As He Likes to Describe Himself, Appeared on the Scene
A NDREA B OCELLI Tenor Bocelli is one of opera’s most important innovations. Just when we were reading and talking about reports of the demise of the operatic genre, with theatres dismally half empty, with the slump in record sales, with the virtual disappearance of opera from television schedules, suddenly the tenor Andrea Bocelli, a modern tenor in the old style as he likes to describe himself, appeared on the scene. His musicality combined with highly personal and persuasive vocal colour, and perfect diction, tinged with a subtle, barely-concealed melancholy goes straight to the hearts of the listeners and is the reason for his spectacular success. After studying under the expert guidance of Maestro Luciano Bettarini, teacher of many great names including Ferruccio Tagliavini, Ettore Bastianini and Franco Corelli, Bocelli attended a masterclass in Turin with Franco Corelli. The Pisa-born tenor made his stage debut in Verdi's Macbeth in 1994, with performances in Pisa, Mantova, Lucca and Livorno, under Claudio Desderi. This decisive debut was followed by the CD Viaggio italiano with Vladimir Fedoseyev, released through Sugar in 1995. The first wholly operatic concerts of international importance were at Cagliari and at the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago in summer 1997; on this occasion Bocelli sang arias and duets from Madama Butterfly and Tosca and, responding to rapturous applause, gave an encore of the "9 Cs" aria from La fille du régiment. In 1998 he made a second stage debut, this time in Cagliari, in the leading role of Rodolfo opposite Daniela Dessì in Puccini's La Bohème, conducted by Steven Mercurio.

意 On Via Emilia 大 Kurt Ganapathy explores the western half of Italy’s Emilia- Romagna region, a land famous for fast cars, frizzante wine 利 and phenomenal food. 记 s I arrive in Bologna, the Acapital of Emilia-Romagna, I consider myself to be well acquainted with the region. Ducati, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati – the names simply roll off the tongue. Each city along the ancient Roman artery of Via Emilia I remember from their football team’s stint in Serie A. The food and wine – I know it all too well. Or do I? Thinking back, I realise that the lambrusco I’ve drunk was all cheap and a little too sweet. And the tagliatelle al ragù “parmesan” cheese? Too often powder sprinkled over pasta that was more American than Italian. At the invitation of Emilia Romagna Tourism and Camera di Commercio Reggio Emilia, it was time to discover the heart of this “land with a soul”.
