Another month another newsletter! This month’s newsletter kind grew out of control so please bring a pillow as you’ll probably fall asleep while reading. Anyway I hope you enjoy this months eclectic mix of articles and info. Change Of Logo... We have changed our logo! Our previous logo was based on an eagle from the back of an Italian Mus- solini era coin. The new logo is based on the leaping boar image depicted on the antefix found at Chester. Two versions exist. The first is for a white back- ground and the second for black or a dark back- ground. For our logo we have framed the boar in a victory wreath with a purple ribbon. We tried various colour ribbons but purple worked out best - red made it look like a Christmas wreath! I have sent these logo’s to a garment manufacturer in the UK and should have prices back shortly for group jackets, sweat shirts and polo shirts. This study explores the representation of holy places in devotional images from the early Christian era to the post-Byzantine period. I delineate five phases of this development. The first phase (300s-500s) was connected to the rise of Christian sacred sites. Christian ideas about sacredness of locations built upon the Greek and Roman cults, and the Jewish religion but reflected Christianity’s own practices. Despite the variety of Christian holy places, only biblical sites appeared in religious images. This tendency changed in the post-Iconoclastic period. After the 900s, non-biblical sacred places gradually populated icons. All of these were monastic. The roots of this iconographic development must be sought in the standardization of the representation of saints. The Menologion of Basil II (976- 1025) exemplifies the first systematic association of saints with specific locations.

  • Artemis, Diana and Skaði
Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Viking and Medieval Norse Studies Artemis, Diana and Skaði: A Comparative Study Ritgerð til M.A. prófs i Viking and Medieval Norse Studies Giulia Mancini Kt.: 280794-4739 Leiðbeinandi: Luke John Murphy & Tofi H. Tulinius May 2019 Giulia Mancini Spring 2019 ABSTRACT The Norse goddess Skaði is somewhat of a Nordic enigma, in that she seems to be much more complex than what we can make from her mentions in the myths, which are scarce and yet surprisingly detailed. The question of her role within the Norse mythology is still unanswered, and her complexity and controversial roles have captured the attention of many of the finest minds in this field, however no study has yet succeeded in providing a definite answer to the question of her role during the Late Pagan period. As such, this thesis seeks to insert itself into the discussion, by standing on the shoulders of giants and, at the same time, attempting to walk its own research path in the investigation of the Norse goddess. For the purpose of this work, Skaði will be analyzed in a wider European context, comparing her to goddesses belonging to the Classical tradition, Artemis and Diana, who seem to be linked with similar activities and elements. Drawing from a series of literary sources respectively from the Germanic and Classic tradition, together with the comparative and the semantic center approach (Schjødt 2009), a comparative analysis of the goddesses will be proposed, to individuate similarities and differences in their connection with animals, hunting and landscape. Through the use of these sources and tools, an attempt will be made of demonstrating the validity of the methodology proposed, by testing it both within the frames of Norse religion and comparative mythology.

The temple – now in ruins – lies at the centre of a small, extinct volcano that is surrounded by densely wooded hills; the blue lake in front of the volcano reflects the crater's edges perfectly and it is easy to see why in antiquity it was known as the speculum (mirror) of Diana.146 The sanctuary and the administering town of Aricia were located about 40 kilometres south of Rome and could be reached via the Via Appia.

Dear Reader, This book was referenced in one of the 185 issues of 'The Builder' Magazine which was published between January 1915 and May 1930. To celebrate the centennial of this publication, the Pictoumasons website presents a complete set of indexed issues of the magazine. As far as the editor was able to, books which were suggested to the reader have been searched for on the internet and included in 'The Builder' library.' This is a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by one of several organizations as part of a project to make the world's books discoverable online. Wherever possible, the source and original scanner identification has been retained. Only blank pages have been removed and this header- page added. The original book has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books belong to the public and 'pictoumasons' makes no claim of ownership to any of the books in this library; we are merely their custodians. Often, marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in these files – a reminder of this book's long journey from the publisher to a library and finally to you. Since you are reading this book now, you can probably also keep a copy of it on your computer, so we ask you to Keep it legal.
