PLACEMENT BROCHURE 2018-20 3 Chairman’s Message

I am very happy to introduce to you the students of the 39th batch of IRMA’s flagship programme Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management and invite you in the forthcoming campus placement process. After about two years of rigorous academic and field assignments under the well-qualified and competent faculties, these students are now ready to be launched as rural management professionals.

As you may be aware, Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) was set-up in 1979 by the ‘Father of the White Revolution’ Dr Verghese Kurien to nurture and develop a cadre of rural management professionals to serve producer institutions and other developmental organizations. IRMA uses a rigorous, nationwide selection process to identify potential candidates having basic aptitude and motivation to work for the development of the rural sector.

It gives me immense pleasure to mention that, over the past 39 years, IRMA has nurtured more than 3000 professionals who are making valuable contribution in meeting the goals of the organizations they are working for. It is indeed satisfying to note that these IRMA alumni are imbibed with the values and ethos which are required to serve the rural households with empathy.

It is indeed a privilege to invite you to have interaction with some of India’s finest and committed young women and men who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and aptitude to contribute to creation of rural wealth and nation building. I am sure that you will find many of them quite suited and qualified to help you in fulfilling the vision and mission of your organization.

Shri Dilip Rath, Chairman, IRMA

4 Institute of Rural Management Anand Director’s Message

IRMA was set up by Dr. Verghese Kurien in the year 1979 with an aim to create a new generation of barefoot managers who would usher in modern management to serve the rural and the underserved economy. Since then, 3150 IRMA graduates have contributed immensely to the mission of IRMA across every sector of the economy.

Students at IRMA receive a management education unparalleled elsewhere, learning from the best and leading to fulfilling careers while making a socio-economic impact to millions of lives. No other business school in the world has been able to inspire young minds - with changing aspirations year after year – to serve people in the rural space, as IRMA.

Through its flagship program, the Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management (PGDRM), IRMA has not only germinated the concept of quality education in rural management and development, but actively fostered it. It is our continuing endeavour to keep abreast of the challenges and opportunities in the world of business, governance, and civil society while creating leaders and change-makers for a better tomorrow.

The PGDRM is a course with a unique curriculum. It not only offers high quality courses through its classroom terms, but also distinct segments that focus on experiential learning through the innovative Village Fieldwork Segment (VFS) and the Summer Internship Segment (SIS). The addition of two full terms of elective courses makes the classroom learning all the more enriching.

It gives me great pleasure in introducing to you the highly competent students of the batch of PGDRM 2018-20. I’m sure that you will be able to find the talent you’re looking for from this diverse and vibrant batch and that they will be the torch-bearers of your organizations for years to come. Prof. Hitesh V. Bhatt, Director, IRMA

PLACEMENT BROCHURE 2018-20 5 “You have chosen the road less travelled by, to work with those who need your services rather than opting for jobs, which would fetch you rewards, but I must warn you that you will face disillusionment and opposition at every step. I urge you to face every day with courage, patience and humility. If you persevere, you will make a difference to the rural masses and it is this difference upon which the future of our nation rests,” said Dr. Kurien to one of the graduating batches at IRMA.

Let us take you through the journey of IRMA regarding who we are, how we started, and where we are headed. “You cannot raise princes in a pigsty” was the retort from Dr. Kurien when questioned how people trained in the world class infrastructure of IRMA could possibly work in villages. This vision gave shape to the sprawling 60 acres campus on which IRMA stands today. The lush green campus of IRMA is situated at Anand - alongside the founding institutions NDDB and GCMMF. The towering Chimes, the grey walls, the winding paths and the green lawns bespeak the legend and his mastery. Every part of the campus has an enduring legacy behind it and plays a vital role in shaping the Odyssey of future rural managers.

PLACEMENT BROCHURE 2018-20 9 The wheels of the White Revolution were set rolling in the then sleepy town of Anand. It gave birth to the cooperative structure, which forms the bedrock of many development initiatives in India. When Dr. Kurien was looking for managers to realize his vision of Operation Flood, he found that the educational scenario at the time did not cater to this specific need. Having already set up more than 30 institutions including AMUL, NDDB, and GCMMF he devoted his institution-building skills to developing an institute that would train managers who, apart from possessing required managerial skills, would have an additional advantage in terms of a grasp of the dynamics of rural India. Thus, IRMA was set up in 1979 with a mandate to professionalize management of rural producers’ organizations while creating a body of knowledge in the concerned field. The institute was established with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Government of India, the erstwhile Indian Dairy Corporation, the National Dairy Development Board, and the Government of Gujarat. The founding mandate was to provide management education, training, research and consultancy support to cooperatives and other organizations working for rural development in India. The core of IRMA’s operating philosophy has been to build and sustain a partnership between rural people and committed professional managers, as is reflected in its mission statement “to promote sustainable, ecologically-friendly and equitable socio-economic development of rural people through professional management.” About IRMA

10 Institute of Rural Management Anand IRMA strives to contribute to the promotion of sustainable development and social justice in India’s rural society by: • Creating a new breed of professional rural managers with the appropriate ethos and values • Helping rural organizations and institutions in professionalizing their management • Empowering rural people through self-sustaining processes • Building new rural management knowledge and theories through action-oriented and problem-solving research and consultancy • Influencing public policies. For more than three decades IRMA has been committed to excellence in scholarship, research, and training. A variety of rural organizations - cooperatives/producers’ organizations, non- government and government development organizations, and social enterprises besides others engaged with the rural space in the context of enhancing its prosperity have approached IRMA for problem-solving techniques and consultation. The graduates of IRMA have gone on to become thought leaders in the fields of public management, cooperatives, development, politics and more. In today’s world, when the opportunities in rural areas are brimming over, IRMA’s graduates have left no stone unturned in having successfully established the rural linkages for organizations from different sectors, given their area expertise. This has, in turn, strengthened IRMA’s position as the pioneering institute of rural management in the country and a reputed institution of knowledge throughout the world.

The Centres aim to create an enabling climate for knowledge enhancement in tandem with the endowment units at IRMA namely RBI Endowment Unit, NABARD Chair Unit, Dr. Verghese Kurien Centre of Excellence.

PLACEMENT BROCHURE 2018-20 13 THE IRMA WAY The 22-month long PGDRM programme is divided into six classroom terms and a Summer Internship Segment. The courses in each of these six terms are carefully structured in order to give a wholesome view of the entire discipline and are judiciously placed to enable the participants to apply the same during their internship. In order to achieve this perfect learning mix IRMA, through its illustrious faculty, follows a distinct pedagogy with regard to each course that includes case analysis, simulations, experiential exercise, project presentations, writing papers, and guest lectures apart from an extensive use of audio-visual aids during regular classes. Projects and Presentations These form an integral part of the stimulating curriculum at IRMA, giving participants an opportunity to showcase their knowledge, creativity, and dynamism. Working in different groups with their peers from diverse academic backgrounds widens the knowledge base of participants introducing variety to their unique learning experience, besides honing their leadership and people management skills. Innovative projects such as writing policy briefs, creating business and marketing plans for cooperatives, products, book reviews etc. are vital components of the curriculum. Simulation / Experiential Exercises and Audio-Visual Aids The aforementioned components help participants gain better insights into various management concepts and development constructs. Fresh graduates are inducted into the PGDRM programme through the famed in-house management simulation game called ‘Naranpur Express’ that simulates rural economy and emphasizes the need for asset management and financial prudence. IRMA faculty members have been repeatedly invited by other top management schools in the country to conduct this game. Simulation games are also employed in courses to demonstrate practical situations and the strategies required to be used in them. Case Analysis Drawing upon their vast experience in research and consultancy, IRMA faculty members prepare and publish case studies in the field of rural management and other functional areas of management. These case studies, along with those drawn from other leading national and international B-Schools, are used for introducing contextual analyses and insights into issues discussed in classes by simulating a business environment in the classroom. Experiential Learning The most striking feature of the PGDRM course at IRMA is the emphasis placed on experiential learning. IRMA believes this to be an integral part in shaping the participants’ outlook. Therefore as a part of the curriculum, participants spend considerable time outside of campus, learning and applying. A participant graduating with a PGDRM diploma will have lived and worked with the underserved for nearly five months and hence, becoming a valuable asset to any organization wanting to cater tothe needs of rural development. A Firm Belief in Gender Inclusivity Promoting equity and ensuring equal opportunities for the marginalized is implicit in the ambit of rural management. This can only be achieved if the same principles are respected at home. Here at IRMA, the genders are treated on par. Girls face the same challenges as their male counterparts while on their fieldwork in the hinterlands. The tenacity of assignments remains the same and neither of the genders is discriminated against in the context of opportunities.

IMPORTANT DATES & RECRUITMENT PROCESS

We hope that this brief voyage through our beautiful campus has helped you understand IRMA and its unique disposition. Over the years, IRMA has carved a niche in management education and has created the new discipline of rural management itself. The alumni of the Institute have become thought leaders and change agents in their chosen spheres, which has led to IRMA’s recognition on the international platform as an institute par excellence.

Intimation of the Interview Dates November to Organisations 16, 2019

Placement Week: (as per thematic grouping) IRMA’s placement process is unlike that of the other institutes in that there is no concept of Day 0 or 1. We welcome all our participating firms having interest in our students and rather group the placement activity into thematic groupings to help both the prospective December 2 employer and the employees in choosing the partner of their choice. Thus, for example, to December all firms interested in agribusiness or finance are grouped similarly and all those inthe development sector are grouped together.
