  • Scene Questionnaire
Scene Questionnaire The following is a list of activities in the BDSM scene. It can be used by both the dominant (male or female) and the Submissive (female) to interview each other, and see what level both are at. It is also used to find commonality. Place a check next to each box which you can relate to the most. If confused, go to the next one, and come back when finished with the rest. Answer each question honestly. Where it says "Yes/No/Try" = means whether you've experienced that type of activity before. Put "Y" for yes or "N" for no and a “T” to try something new. Rating scale for checklist: 0 = Do not ever ask me to do this, or hard limit. 1 = I don't want to do this activity, but wouldn't object if it was asked of me. 2 = I'm willing to do this activity, but it has no real appeal for me. 3 = I usually like doing this activity, at least on an occasional basis. 4 = I love doing this activity, and would like to experience it on a regular basis. 5 = I love this activity it makes me "hot", and would like it as often as possible. • Gender and SEXUALITY and Ada Demaj Feminist Researcher and Writer Residing in Toronto, Canada Sexuality
Annual Review TOUCHING RACE THROUGH PLAY: of Critical Psychology 11, 2014 SADOMASOCHISM, PHENOMENOLOGY, AND THE INTERTWINING OF RACE Gender AND SEXUALITY and Ada Demaj Feminist researcher and writer residing in Toronto, Canada Sexuality Abstract When scholars research and theorize about sadomasochism (SM) as a sexual practice, they usually focus exclusively on how gender and sex- uality are played out in SM encounters, often neglecting other crucial identity categories such as race. In this paper, I undertake a phenom- enology-inspired, interdisciplinary discussion of the controversial SM practice of “race play,” which involves re-enacting and staging oppres- sive racist relations in a sexual context. I argue that exploring “race play” is important because it can reveal the ways in which race is closely intertwined with the erotic, even when race is not overtly acknowl- edged. Importantly, I argue that SM race play brings forth the ways in which institutionalized relations of domination and submission are always already imbued with eroticism, and that the erotic elements of contemporary sadomasochistic relations are inextricably linked to his- torical oppressive relations. I claim that further critical engagement with SM can bring to appearance the transformative and subversive potential of these practices. Keywords: Sadomasochism, phenomenology, sexuality, femi- nism, race play 97 ANNUAL REVIEW OF CRITICAL PSYCHOLOGY 11, 2014 Gender and TOUCHING RACE THROUGH PLAY: SADOMASOCHISM, PHENOMENOLOGY, Sexuality AND THE INTERTWINING OF RACE AND SEXUALITY Introduction This article seeks to examine whether and how race as a category that structures relations between people (and institutions) is manifested in sadomasochistic (SM) engagements. It is interesting to look at race in the context of SM because, as much recent empirical re- search reveals, self-identified SM participants generally perceive their SM relations as sub- versive, or as ‘rejecting social norms’ (Turley, King, and Butt, 2010).

Members of the kinky community welcomed me with all my quirks and were patient with my incessant questions. I will always value their strength and kindness. Members of the kinky community dared me to be fully present as a complete person rather than relying on just being a researcher. They stretched my imagination and did not let my theories go uncontested. Lively debates and embodied practices forced me to consider the many paths to truth. As every anthropologist before me, I have learned about both the universality and particularity of human experience. I am amazed. For the sake of confidentiality, I cannot mention specific people or groups, but I hope they know who they are and how much this has meant to me.

  • AMERICAN INFERNO by PATRICK DENKER
AMERICAN INFERNO by PATRICK DENKER (Under the Direction of Reginald McKnight) ABSTRACT American Inferno, a novel, is a loose transposition of Dante‟s Inferno into a contemporary American setting. Its chapters (or “circles”) correspond to Dante‟s nine circles of Hell: 1) Limbo, 2) Lust, 3) Gluttony, 4) Hoarding & Wasting, 5) Wrath, 6) Heresy, 7) Violence, 8) Fraud and 9) Treachery. The novel‟s Prologue — Circle 0 — corresponds to the events that occur, in the Inferno, prior to Dante‟s and Virgil‟s entrance into Hell proper. The novel is a contemporary American moral inquiry, not a medieval Florentine one: thus it is sometimes in harmony with and sometimes a critique of Dante‟s moral system. Also, like the Inferno, it is not an investigation just of its characters‟ personal moral struggles, but also of the historical sins of its nation: for Dante, the nascent Italian state; for us, the United States. Thus the novel follows the life story of its principal character as he progresses from menial to mortal sins while simultaneously considering American history from America‟s early Puritan foundations in the Northeast (Chapters 1-4) through slavery, civil war and manifest destiny (Chapters 5-7) to its ultimate expression in the high-technology West-Coast entertainment industry (Chapters 8-9). INDEX WORDS: Dante Alighieri, Divine Comedy, Inferno, Sin, American history, American morality, Consumerism, Philosophical fiction, Social realism, Frame narrative, Christianity, Secularism, Enlightenment, Jefferson, Adorno, Culture industry, lobbying, public relations, advertising, marketing AMERICAN INFERNO by PATRICK DENKER B.A., Duke University, 1992 M.F.A., San Francisco State University, 2002 A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The University of Georgia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY ATHENS, GEORGIA 2010 © 2010 Patrick Denker All Rights Reserved AMERICAN INFERNO by PATRICK DENKER Major Professor: Reginald McKnight Committee: O.

  • Women's Experimental Cinema
FILM STUDIES/WOMEN’S STUDIES BLAETZ, Women’s Experimental Cinema provides lively introductions to the work of fifteen avant- ROBIN BLAETZ, garde women filmmakers, some of whom worked as early as the 1950s and many of whom editor editor are still working today. In each essay in this collection, a leading film scholar considers a single filmmaker, supplying biographical information, analyzing various influences on her Experimental Cinema Women’s work, examining the development of her corpus, and interpreting a significant number of individual films. The essays rescue the work of critically neglected but influential women filmmakers for teaching, further study, and, hopefully, restoration and preservation. Just as importantly, they enrich the understanding of feminism in cinema and expand the ter- rain of film history, particularly the history of the American avant-garde. The essays highlight the diversity in these filmmakers’ forms and methods, covering topics such as how Marie Menken used film as a way to rethink the transition from ab- stract expressionism to Pop Art in the 1950s and 1960s, how Barbara Rubin both objecti- fied the body and investigated the filmic apparatus that enabled that objectification in her film Christmas on Earth (1963), and how Cheryl Dunye uses film to explore her own identity as a black lesbian artist. At the same time, the essays reveal commonalities, in- cluding a tendency toward documentary rather than fiction and a commitment to nonhi- erarchical, collaborative production practices. The volume’s final essay focuses explicitly on teaching women’s experimental films, addressing logistical concerns (how to acquire the films and secure proper viewing spaces) and extending the range of the book by sug- gesting alternative films for classroom use.

Thank you for joining us for this weekend-long all-you-can-eat buffet of hypnotic adventures! Whether this is your first hypnosis convention ever or you’ve been coming for years, take a moment to reflect on our community and all the progress we have made in the past ten years. Ten years ago, few of us had met in person, trancing in real life was something that most of us only dreamed about, and there wasn’t much acknowledgement of hypnosis as a kink in the kink community. Fast forward to today, where in the past year there have been four (!!!) hypnosis conferences with more than 150 attendees. In addi- tion to the beloved familiar names, we have so many new names and faces in our midst. We are training and inspiring the next gen- eration of attendees and presenters. This year, we welcome 21 presenters who have never presented at NEEHU in addition to 26 more familiar names. Please make every effort to go to some of these fresh new classes! Please go forth this weekend and have an abundance of mentally, emotionally, and otherwise stimulating experiences. You are in a unique space surrounded by friends, and friends you have never met. This is a place where you can ask for what you need and ex- plore those things that you know in your heart you wish.
