Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -
Folk Hinduism in West Bengal
1 Folk Hinduism in West Bengal In the rural areas of India, we see a variety of notions about the nature of gods and goddesses. They are not “high gods,” as we see in the pan-Indian brahmanical forms of Hinduism, but rather regional deities, intimately associated with villages and towns. Indeed, some would not be characterized as gods and goddesses by most people, for those supernatural entities given offerings and worship include ghosts, ancestors, water and plant essences, guardian spirits, and disease con- trollers. We see some overlap of tribal deities, the deities of non-Hindu or semi- Hindu villagers, with the village gods or gramadevatas of village Hinduism. These may be µeld or mountain spirits, or angry ghosts of women who died violent deaths. All of these may be seen in the large area of folk Hinduism. There is no sharp differentiation between the tribal deities, village deities, and gods and god- desses of brahmanical Hinduism. Rather than a polarity, we see a continuum, for these traditions worship many deities in common. Some themes that may be noted in the worship of folk gods and goddesses: Regionalism: These deities are associated with speciµc places, temples, µelds, and streams. The Kali of one village is not the same as the next village’s Kali. One Chandi gives good hunting, another Chandi cures disease. Goddesses are not pan-Indian; they are speciµc to a person’s tribal or caste group, ex- tended family, neighborhood, or village. Pragmatism: These deities are rarely worshiped in a spirit of pure and ab- stract devotion. -
Wing During the Anglo-Saxon Period
Wing during the Anglo-Saxon period. By Sarah Roe BA (Hons) History Introduction I have the most wonderful privilege of having a young Saxon girl living with me at present, not a ghost as such, but a recreation of a skull found in our local graveyard during a development dig 15 years ago. She has inspired me to take another look at Wing to see exactly how she may have lived, who she may have been and what life was like. Wing was not the ordinary small village that was made out when ‘Meet the Ancestors’ visited in 1999, it was in fact a frontier Anglo-Saxon holding, on the very edge of the Kingdom of Mercia, with a Minster serving several parishes around the area, its influence dwindling in the mid- late Medieval period until Tudor times. We have no exact knowledge of what Wing would have been like as very little written evidence has been found, however we can imagine from the fragmentary evidence we do have the rough size and scope of Wing. This paper will look at the land history of the area. Early Wing The only physical evidence we have of Anglo-Saxons in Wing today is the Church, supposed to be one of the oldest in the country, potentially dating from as early as the 7th century, and probably used as a burial ground from that time (Holmes and Chapman, p.66). This date puts Wing at the forefront of the rise of the Christian Church. Pope Gregory had determined that the English would be converted and took the relevant steps to ensure success. -

THE SUN, THE MOON AND FIRMAMENT IN CHUKCHI MYTHOLOGY AND ON THE RELATIONS OF CELESTIAL BODIES AND SACRIFICE Ülo Siimets Abstract This article gives a brief overview of the most common Chukchi myths, notions and beliefs related to celestial bodies at the end of the 19th and during the 20th century. The firmament of Chukchi world view is connected with their main source of subsistence – reindeer herding. Chukchis are one of the very few Siberian indigenous people who have preserved their religion. Similarly to many other nations, the peoples of the Far North as well as Chukchis personify the Sun, the Moon and stars. The article also points out the similarities between Chukchi notions and these of other peoples. Till now Chukchi reindeer herders seek the supposed help or influence of a constellation or planet when making important sacrifices (for example, offering sacrifices in a full moon). According to the Chukchi religion the most important celestial character is the Sun. It is spoken of as an individual being (vaúrgún). In addition to the Sun, the Creator, Dawn, Zenith, Midday and the North Star also belong to the ranks of special (superior) beings. The Moon in Chukchi mythology is a man and a being in one person. It is as the ketlja (evil spirit) of the Sun. Chukchi myths about several stars (such as the North Star and Betelgeuse) resemble to a great extent these of other peoples. The interdependence of the Earth and celestial as well as weather phenomena has a special meaning for mankind for it is the co-exist- ence of the Sun and Moon, day and night, wind, rainfall and soil that creates life and warmth and provides the daily bread. -

Discard or hold in high esteem? A specific vantage point in research efforts in the context of the history of disability In this paper our scrutiny regarding the history of disability aims to undertake the reconstruction of patterns perceived in the context of both the acceptance and exclusion of persons with disability. The continuous revisiting of this topic, broken down to research-related questions formulated time and time again, is an essential ingredient of the research effort, due partly to the changing components perceived in the development of society, partly to new findings rooted in the nature of science in development. The primary focus of our paper is related to specific methodological issues in the context of the history of disability. 1.1.1. A social issue to provide the background to our research effort The social issue which necessitates the invocation of the history of disability as a vantage point to be provided – a background, as it were, to the whole concept of | S research – is the oppression of persons with disability in constantly changing forms at various epochs throughout the history of social as well as cultural development. This is equally true for the curators as a penchant who tries to collect various fussy objects without paying importance to the objects that narrates the rich engravings of oral literatures of the communities. Anthropological and Museum studies on the oral narratives of tribal communities have a very distinct place that throws light into the connectedness of the intangible heritage with the tangible aspects of culture. The curators, as a museum practitioner, however adopt some key indicators to create brownie points for representation of tribal narratives that are reflected in their Art and Craft. This paper is an attempt to describe and illustrate the contents of rich tribal literature which are preserved through oral transmission and the invisible role of curators who plays a vital role in expanding and preserving their literatures that remain concealed in the Art and Craft traditions. The paper deals with museum documentation among the PTGs of Odisha especially on the collection of Kapadaganda- embroided shawl of Dongaria Kondh and Majang- the youth dormitory of Juang tribe. The reflections of their oral narratives in these material aspects of culture are filled with astounded traditional wisdom and the paper examines the empathetic ties between their narratives and its tangible reflections which persist in the contemporary changing situation and cultural practices among these PTGs of Odisha. -
