Events at the different locations will showcase wellness programs, offer free glucose and blood pressure testing, and demonstrate physical education activities that involve students and parents. City Council members and School Board members may attend. Program participants, families, school staff, and community members are also invited, and more than 200 people are expected.

At the event, afterschool instructors will work with students to paint a mural, and afterschool providers will give parents program information.

Mobile, Alabama: Mary Cole, Hearin Chandler Family YMCA, 251-344-4856, [email protected] The Hearin Chandler Family YMCA Afterschool site will celebrate Lights On Afterschool on October 18th from 4:00-6:00 PM. Mayor Samuel Jones may speak about afterschool programs, along with School Board members. Children will decorate the facility with their artwork, and share what they learn in and enjoy about afterschool. The event is open to the community and approximately 100 people are expected.

Montgomery, Alabama: Charlie Gibbons, Maxwell AFB Youth Center, [email protected] On October 18th from 3:00-5:30 PM, the Maxwell Air Force Base Youth Center will host a carnival in celebration of Lights On Afterschool. It will include games, face painting, food and information on afterschool programs. The Flight Chief may attend along with the Service Wings Commander and Services Director. Children, families, teachers and the base media are invited. More than 100 people are expected.

Alaska Anchorage, Alaska: Drew Hansen, 21st Century Community Learning Center at Wonder Park Elementary, 907-742-1730, On October 18th, the Wonder Park Elementary School will host a Lights On Afterschool Carnival with a literacy theme. The Base Commander will speak to youth and parents about the importance of afterschool activities. Afterward, the children will read poems, sing songs and dance for participants. A tasting party will also be held for parents.

Fairbanks, Alaska: Afterschool Ambassador Julie Wild-Curry, Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, 907-452-2000, ext. 251, [email protected] On October 18th the Fairbanks Community After School Partnership will host a bus tour of several area afterschool programs in celebration of Lights On Afterschool from 3:45-7:00 PM. Area dignitaries and community members who join the tour will visit four afterschool programs – a school-based program, two community-based programs and one faith-based program. On the bus, participants will receive information about programming and about the need for strong quality programs in our community. Governor Palin has signed an Executive Proclamation declaring October 18, 2007 as “Lights On Afterschool Day” in Alaska.

Fairbanks, Alaska: Kelly McGuire, Tanana Middle School, 907-452-8145, [email protected] On October 18th from 5:15-6:15 PM, the Eagle Wings Afterschool Program at Tanana Middle School will celebrate Lights On Afterschool with an open house. The event will include games that students and parents can play together, a student artwork showcase, and information for parents. Organizers will provide cookies and snacks.

Fort Richardson Army Base, Alaska: Lori Jarvis, Fort Richardson School Age Services, [email protected], On October 18th, this Lights On Afterschool celebration will bring parents, military commanders and the community together for an open house organized by Fort Richardson School Age Services. Children and parents will participate in activities and enjoy healthy snacks.

Luke Air Force Base, Arizona: Estelle Grengs, Luke AFB Youth Center [email protected], 623-856-7471 October 18th will bring parents and families to the Luke AFB Youth Center for demonstrations in gymnastics and Tae Kwon Do from 5:30–7:30 PM. During this open house, parents will be shown the activities that take place during the after school hours, meet staff members and enjoy refreshments. The program will also offer a discount for newly registered members.

Prescott Valley, Arizona: Cindy Craig, The Yavapai Afterschool Age Coalition, [email protected] On October 18th from 3:00-6:00 PM, the Yavapai Afterschool Age Coalition will celebrate Lights On Afterschool with open houses at each of its sites. Many of the events will feature refreshments, information about afterschool programs, and student-decorated light bulbs. Students will share why they enjoy afterschool and what they would be doing if they were not in the program. At each of the events, parents will fill out surveys about how they think afterschool programs in Prescott Valley can improve. Tucson, Arizona: Afterschool Ambassador Martha Petty, Flowing Wells Extension Programs, Inc., Youth Enrichment Services, 520-887-2600, [email protected] On October 18th, the Flowing Wells Extension Programs, Inc., will host its 3rd annual Lights On Afterschool Carnival. The event will take place at the Flowing Wells Junior High Cafeteria from 5:00-8:00 PM where parents and children from eight afterschool programs will join together to celebrate afterschool. Five to six hundred students are expected to attend. In honor of the Empire State Building being lit up for Lights On Afterschool, a local baker will donate a cake in the shape of the Empire State Building.

Arkansas Eureka Springs, Arkansas: Afterschool Ambassador Barbara Dunnam, Eureka Kids Inc., 479- 981-0574, [email protected] On October 18th from 3:00-6:00 PM, Eureka Kids will hold a Lights On Afterschool event at Harmon Park. More than 100 laptops and desktops will be distributed to school-aged youth from throughout Carroll County, program participants will highlight their afterschool advocacy, and organizers will recognize the sponsors who helped buy new flooring for the program. The event will also include barbecue, a pie eating contest, and clothing and school supply giveaways. The

The event will feature music, games, and demonstrations of afterschool activities.

Little Rock, Arkansas: Cindy Covey, Little Rock Parks and Recreation, 501-565-0140, [email protected] Little Rock Parks and Recreation will hold a Pep Rally at City Hall on October 18th from 3:30- 4:30 PM for Lights On Afterschool. The event will include cheerleading, music and readings from children. Several community members will speak about the importance of afterschool. More than 100 people are expected.

Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas: Jacqueline Russell, LRAFB Youth Center, [email protected], 501-987-6355 An art gallery is planned for the Lights On Afterschool event on October 18th in Little Rock. It will showcase the different activities that take place at the program, and children will then serve refreshments to parents and give them a tour.

California Beale Air Force Base, California: Morag Peterson, Beal AFB School Age Program Youth Center, [email protected], 530-634-4719 Beal AFB School Age Program Youth Center will hold an open house and family fun night at which parents will participate with children in afterschool activities, to celebrate Lights On Afterschool on October 18th from 6:00-8:00 PM.

Chino, California: Robin Crowder, City of Chino, 909-464-0792 The City of Chino will celebrate Lights On Afterschool on the City Hall lawn on October 18th from 5:00-8:00 PM. Chino Mayor Dennis Yates will speak and the event will also feature a raffle, youth exhibits, and entertainment from several afterschool providers, including the local YMCA. Approximately 800 people are expected.

Fresno, California: Rachel Tabrizi, 559-326-20055, [email protected] On October 18th, the Central Valley Afterschool Foundation (CVAF) will hold a press conference and carnival at Birney Elementary School for Lights On Afterschool. The press conference will begin at 3:00 PM and CVAF will release its report “Afterschool Programs in the Central Valley Addressing the Needs of Our Youth.” The report details the need for adequate funding for afterschool programs. Following the press conference, there will be a carnival outside the school with games and fun activities. Numerous elected officials have been invited. 250 people are expected.

All eight sites will host open houses. The main event will take place at Helen Hunt Jackson Alternative Education and it will feature student entertainment and demonstrations from a number of afterschool programs. The Chief of Police will attend along with students, family, staff, and community members. Approximately 75 people are expected.

Los Angeles, California: Dennis Stecchi, Beyond the Bell Branch, 213-241-3113, [email protected] On October 7th from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM, Beyond the Bell Branch hosted a Lights On Afterschool celebration at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys. More than 30 afterschool agencies and more than 5,000 students celebrated and raised awareness about afterschool programs. The Carney Drill Dance Team, the Woodcraft Drum Core and the A World Fit for Kids Dance Team performed for the crowd. Speakers included City Councilman Dennis Zine, LAUSD School Board President Monica Garcia, Assistant Superintendent for Extended Day Programs Al Cortes, Associate Superintendent for the Division of Special Education Donnalyn Jaque-Antón, City Councilwoman and President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council Wendy Greuel.

Los Angeles, California: Afterschool Ambassador Anna Araujo, Boys & Girls Clubs of East Los Angeles, 323-263-4955, [email protected] The Boys & Girls Clubs of East Los Angeles in collaboration with Rapid Advancement Youth Services, and the City of Montebello, will hold a Lights On Afterschool event. The event will take place on October 18th from 4:30-6:30 PM at Reggie Rodriguez Park Community and will feature a student talent showcase, arts and crafts, games, prizes and exhibits on youth education, employment, and health and safety. Rapid Advancement will showcase its new afterschool program that aims to improve career development in youth ages 12-18. In addition, all youth will receive red ribbons in support of being drug-fee. Local, state, and federal elected government officials will attend. Some 500 people are expected.

Los Angeles, California: Afterschool Ambassador Cathie Mostovoy, Woodcraft Rangers, 213- 388-6788, [email protected] Woodcraft Rangers and Garvey School District will host Lights On Afterschool on October 24th. Representatives from local businesses, city council and the school board will take a bus tour to experience, firsthand, a day in the life of an afterschool program. The bus will travel from Dewey Elementary School to Temple Middle School and arrive at Bitely Elementary School to have a presentation and see student performances. The day will begin with a tour Dewey Elementary School at 2:30 and depart by bus to visit Temple at 3:00 PM.

Oroville, California: Mary Ellen Garrahy, Butte County Office of Education, 530-532-5647, [email protected] The Butte County Office of Education will hold their Lights On Afterschool event in conjunction with the annual community street fair “Family Fun”. The event will take place on October 22nd from 10:00 AM–4:00 PM and will feature student performance, live music, and 33 booths showcasing afterschool programs. More than 6,000 people are expected to attend.

The event will feature pumpkin decorating, bounce houses, a dunk tank, and a showcase of local afterschool programs. Students, families and community members are invited. In conjunction with Bi-National Health Week, community organizations will provide free services to youth and families. All afterschool students are invited and more than 700 people are expected to attend.

Sacramento, California: Afterschool Ambassador Joe Hudson, Sacramento City Unified School District, 916-643-9235, [email protected] On October 18th from 3:00-5:00 PM, the Sacramento City Unified School District in collaboration with the California After School Network will host a Lights On Afterschool celebration at Genesis High School. Senator Darrell Steinberg will speak about afterschool programs and he California After School Network will present the Senator with the local afterschool program hero award.

Santa Clara, California: Jyoti Joglekar, Millikin YMCA, [email protected] Millikin YMCA will host an open house for Lights On Afterschool on October 18th from 5:30- 7:00 PM. The will be a Kids versus Parents Flag Football match and light bulb decorating. Organizers will provide a healthy snack. Student, parents, and staff are invited. More than 40 people are expected.

San Diego, California: Candy Daniels-Snell, Loma Portal Klassic Kids, 619-523-1505, [email protected] On October 18th from 4:00-6:00 PM, Loma Portal Klassic Kids will host an event for Lights On Afterschool. A giant Lights On Afterschool light bulb will decorate the auditorium and Town Councilman Kevin Faulconer will address child care concerns in San Diego. Also, organizers will present a slide show of available community resources for parents and children. The event is open to the community and more than 100 people are expected.

San Francisco, California: Savannah Smith, Jump Prep, 415-359-0059, [email protected] Jump Prep will host a movie night for Lights On Afterschool at Rosa Parks Elementary School on October 18th from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Students, parents and guests will wear pajamas, eat popcorn and pizza, and watch “E.T.” The school principal will attend and greet guests and community leaders as they enter and a representative from the school superintendent’s office will also attend. Johnny Clarke, a local community leader, is the guest speaker. More than 100 children and parents are expected to attend.

San Francisco, California: Megan Agee, Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center, 415-759-3690, [email protected] On October 18th from 3:30-5:00 PM, the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center and PG&E will hold a Lights On Afterschool event at A.P. Giannini Middle School. In addition to supporting afterschool programs, the event will also support a cleaner environment. PG&E will distribute free energy-efficient light bulbs to the entire Sunset community. Community members are invited to observe and participate in activities. At 4:30 PM there will be a short presentation.

Some 25 city agencies will participate along with 600 sixth through ninth graders.

At the event, youth will speak about their afterschool experiences, children will showcase what they learn after school, and organizers will recognize “afterschool heroes.” City Council Member Molly Market will speak along with Colorado State Board of Education member Karen Middelton and Aurora Public School Superintendent John Barry. Former Chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education Jared Polis, Boulder Valley School District Superintendent Chris King and Boulder Mayor Mark Ruzzin will discuss the importance of afterschool programs. On October 18, 73 afterschool sites will host open houses for Lights On Afterschool. In addition, organizers will distribute ribbons and stickers downtown and parents will be encouraged to wear light bulb pins on that day. Well-known comedian, singer and television talk show host Wayne Brady will appear and attend a pre-event reception. A JCPenney official will present a check. One thousand children are expected to attend.

The program at Schultz Elementary will bring local police to fingerprint all the children and give their parents Child ID cards. Some 400 people are expected at the five sites.

Memorial funds were used for the rehab. At the events, students will give speeches about what they have learned at their afterschool program. The event was open to the community and more than 230 people attended.

Rutland, Vermont: Diana Pfenning, Tapestry Program of Rutland Public Schools, 802-786- 1935. On October 11th, from 3:00-5:30 PM, the Tapestry Program of Rutland Public Schools and its community partners held Lights On Afterschool celebrations. Events took place at the Rutland Intermediate School, Northeast Elementary, Northwest Elementary, West Rutland School, and Rutland Town School. All events included baked goods, games, and information on afterschool programs. The events were open to the community.

Virginia Alexandria, Virginia: Wesley Robinson, School Age Tutoring, 703-888-5794 On October 18th, for Lights On Afterschool, the staff of School Age Tutoring will focus on bringing more attention to the funding needs of afterschool programs by going to Capitol Hill and asking Members of Congress to pledge support for afterschool programs.

Audience members will vote on their favorite performances. In addition, organizers will collect letters of support for afterschool programs from students, staff, parents and community leaders which they will later deliver to the Governor’s Office. Approximately 850 program participants, family members, staff and community leaders are expected.

The event will include a bounce castle, carnival style games, prizes and food. It is open to the Misawa Air Force Base and approximately 300 people are expected to attend.

Sasebo, Japan: Christina Sparks, MB School Age Care and Hario School Age Care, [email protected] MB and Hario School Age Care will host a Lights On Afterschool event featuring fun activities for parents and children, including games, art projects, and cooking. Parents are invited to attend and find out about the afterschool program.

South Korea Osan, South Korea: Theodore Morris, Osan Youth Center, [email protected] On October 11th from 4:00-6:00 PM, the Osan Youth Center celebrated Lights On Afterschool with an open house for children, parents and the Air Force Base community. Program providers showcased many of the activities they offer including art, career development, character and leadership development, health and life skills, and sports and recreation.
