  • Nine-Banded Armadillo (Dasypus Novemcinctus) Michael T
    Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) Michael T. Mengak Armadillos are present throughout much of Georgia and are considered an urban pest by many people. Armadillos are common in central and southern Georgia and can easily be found in most of Georgia’s 159 counties. They may be absent from the mountain counties but are found northward along the Interstate 75 corridor. They have poorly developed teeth and limited mobility. In fact, armadillos have small, peg-like teeth that are useful for grinding their food but of little value for capturing prey. No other mammal in Georgia has bony skin plates or a “shell”, which makes the armadillo easy to identify. Just like a turtle, the shell is called a carapace. Only one species of armadillo is found in Georgia and the southeastern U.S. However, 20 recognized species are found throughout Central and South America. These include the giant armadillo, which can weigh up to 130 pounds, and the pink fairy armadillo, which weighs less than 4 ounces. Taxonomy Order Cingulata – Armadillos Family Dasypodidae – Armadillo Nine-banded Armadillo – Dasypus novemcinctus The genus name Dasypus is thought to be derived from a Greek word for hare or rabbit. The armadillo is so named because the Aztec word for armadillo meant turtle-rabbit. The species name novemcinctus refers to the nine movable bands on the middle portion of their shell or carapace.     Life history traits, social organisation and the drivers of sociality in an invasive ground squirrel by Anne Marie van der Marel A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Biological Sciences University of Manitoba Winnipeg, MB, Canada Copyright © 2019 by Anne Marie van der Marel Thesis abstract Sociality evolves when the benefits outweigh the costs of interacting with conspecifics and can be influenced by genetic, phylogenetic, life history, or ecological constraints. Many groups are formed by natal philopatry with the environment constraining levels of sociality. For example, diurnal rodents living in harsh environments can be social to avoid the costs of predation. I used the invasive population of the Barbary ground squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus) on the arid island of Fuerteventura, Spain, as my study system to explore this idea. Two Barbary ground squirrels were introduced to Fuerteventura in 1965. As they are invasive, I first questioned whether life history traits influenced their invasion success. Then, I used observational, experimental and genetic data to investigate whether they are social and whether predator avoidance is a selective pressure influencing their social patterns by studying their vigilance and alarm vocalisations. Barbary ground squirrels have large and frequent litters, and thus show potential for rapid population growth with a generation time of approximately one year, which may have contributed to their invasion success. They are social, as both males and females interact throughout the day, but they show sexual segregation of sleeping burrows.

Artemisia frigida was the dominant plant in the food caches of Brandt’s voles, comprising 44.7% of the stored food in 1986 and 71.4% in 1987.

Much of what I observed is described in this paper along with a summary of pertinent information on burrowing owls already in the literature. Most of this paper deals with the feeding ecology of these owls although there are also sections on productivity, mortality, mirration and dispersal, and miscellaneous aspects of general behavior. I have not included sections on breeding biology, physiology, and many other aspects of the general behavior and ecology of burrowing owls mostly in an effort to scale down the size of the paper,but also because l did not have the opportunity to observe the owls enough in the appropriate situations.

    REVIEW ARTICLE The social life of Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) Manon K Schweinfurth* School of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of St Andrews, St Andrews, United Kingdom Abstract The Norway rat has important impacts on our life. They are amongst the most used research subjects, resulting in ground-breaking advances. At the same time, wild rats live in close association with us, leading to various adverse interactions. In face of this relevance, it is surprising how little is known about their natural behaviour. While recent laboratory studies revealed their complex social skills, little is known about their social behaviour in the wild. An integration of these different scientific approaches is crucial to understand their social life, which will enable us to design more valid research paradigms, develop more effective management strategies, and to provide better welfare standards. Hence, I first summarise the literature on their natural social behaviour. Second, I provide an overview of recent developments concerning their social cognition. Third, I illustrate why an integration of these areas would be beneficial to optimise our interactions with them. Introduction The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus, hereafter referred to as rat) is one of the most abundant mam- mals with a nearly worldwide distribution (Galef, 2009; Puckett et al., 2016). Today, almost all wild rats live in close association with humans, leading to various forms of adverse interactions (Bar- nett, 2001). Behavioral studies of recognition and kin preferences suggest that these cues may change across development, particularly around the time of weaning and emergence from natal burrows (around 25 days of age). I used an habituation- discrimination task with captive S. beldingi, presenting subjects with odors collected from a pair of pups at several ages across early development. I found that at 21days of age, but not at 7 or 14, young produce detectable odors. Odors are not individually distinct, however, until 28 days of age, after young have emerged from their burrows and begun foraging. In addition, an individual’s odor continues to develop after emergence: odors produced by an individual at 20 and 40 days of age are perceived as dissimilar, yet odors produced at 28 and 40 days are treated as similar. Developmental changes in odors provide a proximate explanation for why S. beldingi littermate preferences are not consolidated until after natal emergence, and demonstrate that conspecifics must update their recognition templates as young develop. ß 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
