A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2009-10 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Seven different programs earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2009-10 – a total bettered by only 13 Division III schools – and two Valiant teams (baseball and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including confer- ence championships for the baseball, men’s golf and men’s hockey pro- grams. Three Manhattanville teams (men’s hockey, women’s hockey and women’s soccer) also received national rankings over the course of the year, the most in a single school year since 2004-05. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2009-10 as well. A program-record four Valiants – A.J. Mikkelsen and Mickey Lang (men’s hockey), Katie Little (women’s hockey) and Dan Fiorito (baseball) received All-American accolades, while an incredible six players were named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned two conference Rookie of the Year awards and a school-record 49 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30 former Valiants have gone on to play professionally either domestically or overseas. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- Manhattanville Quick Facts: rounded student-athlete. Levinthal also serves as head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 48 conference championships – 25 regular-season championships and 23 tournament titles – in the last seven seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 25 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. The Valiants put together another very strong overall season in 2009-10, as seven different programs achieved either a regular-season or conference tournament championship. Sixteen of the 21 Valiant programs reached their conference tournament during the year, including Freedom Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances by the men’s golf and baseball teams. Multiple teams ascended to new heights in 2009-10, including the men’s golf team, which won its conference title by an amazing 39 strokes, and the women’s soccer team, which achieved the fi rst NSCAA national ranking in program history thanks to a program-record 17 wins. On an individual level, Manhattanville produced a program-record four All-Americans, six conference Players of the Year and four conference Coaches of the Year. Manhattanville had one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2008-09, posting a cumulative department winning percentage of .548 (184- 151-6), while successfully integrating new men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track programs that raised the number of varsity sports at Manhattanville to 21. Three teams – men’s basketball, men’s tennis and baseball – earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships, while the men’s tennis and women’s lacrosse teams set new program records for wins in a season. The Valiants also produced two All-Americans, four conference Players of the Year, three conference Coaches of the Year and three conference Rookies of the Year. In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while two Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team. Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level academically, socially and athletically. In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student- athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. Last season, Caulfield guided the Valiants to the program’s first Freedom Conference Tournament championship and second NCAA Tournament berth with a 22-21-1 (12-9 Freedom) record, marking the team’s fourth straight year with a conference regular-season or tournament title and its third consecutive appearance in the Freedom Conference championship game.

Six players were honored with spots on the All-Conference team, including Freedom Player of the Year Paul Blejec, who was one of four first-team selections and also was named to the ABCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team. The honor marked the fifth consecutive year at least one Valiant was named to an All-Region team, and all 13 of the program’s All- Region honorees have come under Caulfield’s watch. In addition, Dan Fiorito was named a D3Baseball.com Division III All-American following the season, the first All-America honor in program history.

A three-time conference Coach of the Year, Caulfield is a superb 144-104-1 in his six seasons as a collegiate head coach, including an impressive 80-33 record in conference play. Over those six seasons, Caulfield has coached 13 All-Region players and 31 All-Conference selections.

Caulfield was named the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Valiants to a 26-17 overall record and the Freedom Conference regular-season championship, the program’s third straight conference regular-season title. The skipper became the second active Manhattanville coach to reach the 100-win plateau on March 8 with a 13-12 win over La Roche College. Caulfield’s players also received plenty of individual accolades, as Stephen Pinto was named the conference Player of the Year and the program’s first National ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner to lead three All-Conference honorees and two Valiants to be named to the ABCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams.

In the team’s first season with the Freedom Conference in 2008, Caulfield guided the Valiants to a 29-13 record, including a 14-4 mark in conference play. Manhattanville won a conference regular-season championship for the second consecutive season and also earned a berth in the Freedom Tournament Championship game.

Caulfield led the Valiants to the Skyline Conference regular-season and tournament championships in 2007, in the process guiding Manhattanville to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The 2007 team finished the year ranked seventh in the New York Region and was comprised mainly of young talent recruited by Caulfield. Six of the Valiants’ nine starters were freshmen or sophomores, including All-Region honorees Blejec and A.J. Triano.

The 2006 Valiants also qualified for the postseason, advancing to the ECAC Metro Tournament and finishing the year 22-19, including a 13-5 mark in the Skyline Conference. In his first season of 2005, Caulfield led the Valiants to a 23-15 mark, setting a program record for wins by a first-year coach and earning Skyline Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time.

Before taking the head coaching reigns of the Valiant program, Caulfield worked as an assistant at Manhattanville from 2002-04, serving as the team’s pitching coach.

A 2000 graduate of New York Region power Cortland State, Caulfield was a part of the Red Dragon team for five seasons as a player and coach, helping the team to the College World Series in each year. Caulfield also earned his master’s degree from in 2004.

2011 Manhattanville Baseball Media Guide 3 Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Tim Quinn First Season • Manhattanville ’09 After a one-year absence, former Valiant pitcher Tim Quinn ’09 is back with the Manhattanville baseball program in his first season as an assistant coach under former mentor Jeff Caulfield.

Quinn will play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the Manhattanville baseball program, including on- and off-campus recruiting, fundraising, academic monitoring and alumni relations. On the field, Quinn will work with the Valiant pitching staff and also will with practice and game strategy and preparation.

The Holbrook, N.Y., native will bring an innate knowledge of the Manhattanville program to the coaching staff following a stellar four-year career on the hill for the Valiants from 2006-09. In 27 career appearances (18 starts), Quinn posted an 8-5 record and a 4.12 ERA with 57 in 118 innings. He also walked just 28 batters in his career, and as a result his average of 2.14 walks/9 innings ranks as the lowest in school history.

As a freshman, Quinn went 3-3 with a 2.28 ERA in 10 appearances, the lowest ERA by a freshman in school history and the fourth-lowest single-season ERA overall at Manhattanville. He tied his career-high wins total with three more victories in 2008 despite playing much of the year with an injured arm, an injury that required off-season surgery and kept him off the hill for almost all of his senior year. Undeterred, Quinn served as the team’s first base coach for much of the 2009 campaign before making a dramatic return to the mound on Senior Day, tossing five scoreless innings to pick up the win against Misericordia University in his final collegiate appearance.

Currently pursuing his master’s degree in Physical Education at Manhattanville, Quinn resides in Purchase.

Pitching Coach Mike Seminara Fifth Season • Manhattanville ’05 The winningest pitcher in Manhattanville baseball history, Mike Seminara ‘05 enters his fifth season as the Valiants’ pitching coach in 2011.

Seminara’s tenure with the Valiant coaching staff has coincided with the only two conference tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in program history, coming in 2007 and 2010.

In 2010, the Valiant pitching staff stepped up its game late in the season, averaging just 4.4 runs per game allowed over the final eight games of the year. In the Freedom Conference Tournament, Manhattanville allowed just 12 runs in three games as the Valiants swept their way to the Freedom Conference championship.

In 2009, Seminara presided over a very young pitching staff and helped the Valiants to a Freedom Conference regular-season title and a berth in the conference championship game. Twelve of the staff’s 19 hurlers were underclassmen, including eight freshmen. In his second season at the helm of the Valiant pitchers, Seminara helped the Valiants capture the Freedom Conference regular-season title in 2008 and watched one of his pupils, Frank Albano, capture the Freedom Conference Pitcher of the Year Honor. In his first season with the Valiant staff, Seminara watched as Manhattanville won the Skyline Conference regular- season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Seminara’s hurlers posted a 4.65 ERA and also racked up a number of conference and regional honors, including Mark Barrar earning Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year and Second Team All-Region honors.

A 2005 graduate of Manhattanville, Seminara was a four-year letterwinner with the Valiant baseball team from 2002-05. The righthander went 17-8 with a 3.69 ERA in 36 career appearances in a Valiant uniform, ranking him as the program’s all-time leader in wins and sixth in earned average. He also ranks fourth with 12 career complete games at the school.

Off the field, Seminara also serves Manhattanville as the Director of Community Relations. Assistant Coach Stephen Pinto Second Season • Manhattanville ’09 One of the best players ever to play the diamond for Manhattanville, Stephen Pinto ’09 returns for his second season as an assistant coach with the Valiant baseball team in 2011.

When not coaching the Valiants, Pinto has played professionally in parts of two seasons in the independent Can-Am League with the Pittsfield Colonials (formerly the American Defenders of New Hampshire).

Pinto was a four-year letterwinner with the baseball team from 2006-09, and left Purchase as one of the most decorated players in program history. Pinto was a three-time All-Region honoree and three-time All-Conference first-team selection, including his senior season in which he was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year after hitting .393 with a team-leading 48 runs batted in and 48 runs scored. Pinto also earned ABCA/Rawlings Div. III Gold Glove honors as a senior after committing just one in 128 chances in center field (a .992 ), making him the first Valiant ever to earn the national defensive honor.

Pinto left the school as the all-time leader in hits (224), smashing the previous record by 20, as well as total bases (295). He also ranked second in runs batted in (119) and runs scored (151), and fourth in stolen bases (85), doubles (38) and triples (9) at the time of his graduation.

Home to the Valiant baseball program since its inception in the early 1980s, Manhat- tanville Field continues to provide the Valiant squad with a clear home-field advantage. The field measures 405 feet to straight-away center field, 320 feet to right field and 330 feet to left field and provides generous power alleys for Valiant hitters. Manhattanville Field features bleacher seating down the first-base line and behind home plate, as well as scenic viewing areas on a berm above the right field fence and on the hill along the third-base line. A full, state-of-the-art scoreboard wireless scoreboard was added just beyond the left-center field wall in 2008 to provide fans with inning-by-inning scores, batter counts and all necessary in-game information, while spacious dugouts were recently renovated to provide a comfortable home for both the Valiants and their opponents. Other recent additions to the grounds have included a permanent wind screen along the outfield fence and protective barriers in front of both teams’ dugouts. Manhattanville also has the distinct advantage of having its own fenced-in bullpen located along the right field line, while opponents also have a bullpen area located just beyond its dugout on the third-base side as well. Over the last five years, the Valiant baseball team as posted an excellent 61-29 (.678) record at Manhattanville Field, including a 43-13 (.768) mark against conference opponents on the home field. Kennedy Gymnasium Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymna- sium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing home- court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video stream. New lighting was recently installed in the gym as well in order to enhance the fan and player experience. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round.

Kennedy Gym Facilities Kennedy Gym’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength & conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a full-length swimming pool and dance studio. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of the coaching staff can address their team before, during and after games, while the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker fa- cilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities, all of which are fully-staffed year round. As the day-to-day administrative home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department, the offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within the Kennedy Gym walls, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics adminis- trators and support staff. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best ac- complishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout the school year.

26 2011 Manhattanville Baseball Media Guide Support Staff Strength & Conditioning Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Strength & Conditioning staff will maximize the athletic performance of Valiant student-athletes by using the most effective and effi cient training techniques to compete injury free at the highest level of competition. The aim is to instill a sense of self-discipline, respect and responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal of a team championship. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom fl oor of the Athletic Department hub, Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines that are available for student-athlete use both in and out of season as well as during the summer. In 2007, Manhattanville College opened the new Richard A. Berman Student Center in the center of campus that includes a fi rst-class workout area for the general student population; as a result, Healthworks is now the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. MY SOLDIER Manhattanville’s most well-known social action program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour. Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging, “it was the letters that kept me going. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004.
