A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 325 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2010-11 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Four teams earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2010-11 and three Valiant squads (women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. 13 of 21 Valiant squads earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including the eighth title in 12 seasons for the women’s hockey team and the second straight title for men’s golf. In addition, a pair of Manhattanville squads (men’s hockey and women’s hockey) spent much of the year nationally ranked while two more programs (men’s basketball and men’s golf) topped the list of teams receiving votes nationally in their respective polls over the course of the year. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2010-11 as well, including a pair of Freedom Conference Players of the Year and two Freedom Rookies of the Year to go with 32 combined All-Conference honorees. In the last 10 years, at least 35 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas as well. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, Manhattanville Quick Facts: as evidenced by the 3.20 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2011 semester and the fact that all but four Valiant teams recorded a team • 21 Varsity Sports GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition, the department • Over 325 Student-Athletes boasted its fi rst CoSIDA Academic All-American in 27 years and a pair of • 7 Sports Added Since 2007 CoSIDA Academic All-District representatives, while the department also shattered its previous best with 114 student-athletes named Academic • 25 All-Americans (21 since 1999) All-Conference honorees. • Over 1,000 Service Hours Per Year Community service also continues to play a vital role in the student- athlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds • Cumulative Department GPA over 3.200 of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball “Pink Zone” night and the women’s hockey “Think Pink” event to promote cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school “To the valiant of heart, nothing is impossible.” was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2009, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive - Jeanne d’Albret two awards. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfi ll the college’s mission of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in a global community. The architect and head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program before stepping aside in October 2011, Levinthal will now concentrate full time on keeping Manhattanville in the local, regional and national spotlight.

Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 52 conference championships – 26 regular-season championships and 26 tournament titles – in the last eight seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 27 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings. Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville as a whole continued its recent string of very successful seasons in 2010-11, as 15 teams participated in conference postseason play and four squads won a conference regular-season or tournament title. The Valiant women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf teams won conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during the season, while the men’s basketball team achieved the fi rst D3Hoops.com national ranking in program history and the men’s golf team received votes in multiple national coaches polls for the fi rst time. Off the fi eld, a program-record 114 Valiant student-athletes were named to their respective conference Academic Honor Rolls as well, while the program also earned its fi rst CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American selection in 27 years and a pair of CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honorees.

In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history.

Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team.

Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst full year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to the ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2004, Levinthal also received the honor of beginning a four-year term on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee, serving as one of 13 overall members and one of just four from Division III institutions. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level in all areas: academically, socially and athletically. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student- athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. Assistant Director of Athletics Julene Fisher Seventh Year • Marymount ’02 Julene Fisher is in her seventh year as Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator, and her ninth year overall within the Manhattanville Athletic Department in 2011-12.

As Assistant Athletic Director, Fisher is responsible for assisting the athletic director in an administrative capacity. She handles the scheduling for all of Manhattanville’s 21 sports and also handles travel accommodations and assignment of the department’s student workers.

A former Assistant Sports Information Director at Manhattanville, Fisher also assists the Sports Information Department by serving as a statistician for home baseball games and select other home contests. Fisher began her tenure at Manhattanville as an administrative assistant in the Manhattanville Development Offi ce before moving over to the Athletic Department. Fisher graduated from Marymount College in 2002 as an English/Journalism major. She served as the editor-in-chief of Marymount’s student newspaper, The Cormont, and also was a four-year letterwinner in both swimming and softball at the school. In television, she worked in conjunction with ABC News, the Discovery Channel and HBO to produce the hit series, “The Justice Files”, as well as HBO’s Emmy award winning documentary “In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11”. 2 2012 Manhattanville Baseball Media Guide Coaching Staff Head Coach Jeff Caulfield Eighth Season • Cortland ’00 Already the winningest coach in program history, Jeff Caulfield completed his seventh season at the helm of the Valiant baseball program in 2011.

Caulfield faced perhaps his toughest coaching challenge in 2011, as he had to find a way to replace nine key contributors and six everyday starters. Despite fielding the youngest roster in his tenure at Manhattanville, he guided the team to an 8-1 start, one of the best in program history. Despite finishing the season with a 16-21 record, the team was recognized with four All-Freedom Conference honorees and the conference Rookie of the Year in Alex Basso, while junior Chris Nardozzi was named to the ABCA All-Region second team. The honor marked the seventh consecutive year at least one Valiant was named to an All-Region team, and 14 of the program’s 16 All-Region honorees have come under Caulfield’s watch.

A three-time conference Coach of the Year, Caulfield is a superb 160-125-1 in his seven seasons as a collegiate head coach, including an impressive 87-47 record in conference play. Over those seven seasons, Caulfield has coached 14 All-Region players and 35 All-Conference selections. In 2010, Caulfield guided the Valiants to the program’s first Freedom Conference Tournament championship and second NCAA Tournament berth with a 22-21-1 overall record, the team’s fourth straight year with a conference regular-season or tournament title. Six players were honored with spots on the All-Conference team, including Freedom Player of the Year Paul Blejec, who was one of four first-team selections and also was named to the ABCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region team. Caulfield was named the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Valiants to a 26-17 overall record and the Freedom Conference regular-season championship, the program’s third straight conference regular-season The Caulfield Chronicle title. The skipper became the second active Manhattanville coach to Year Team Record Conference Postseason reach the 100-win plateau on March 8 with a 13-12 win over La Roche 2005 Manhattanville 23-15 16-6 (2nd) Skyline Tournament College. Manhattanville won a conference regular-season Freedom Tournament Finalist championship for the second consecutive season and also earned a 2010 Manhattanville 22-21-1 12-9 (T-3rd) Freedom Tournament Champions berth in the Freedom Tournament Championship game. Four Valiants NCAA Tournament were named to the All-Conference first team to lead six overall All- 2011 Manhattanville 16-21 7-14 (T-6th) Freedom honorees, while Pinto was named to the ABCA All-Region Career Record 160-125-1 87-47 team for a second time. Caulfield led the Valiants to the first Skyline Conference regular- season and tournament championships in program history 2007, in the process guiding Manhattanville to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The team finished the year ranked seventh in the New York Region and was comprised mainly of young talent recruited by Caulfield, as six of the Valiants’ nine starters were freshmen or sophomores. As a result, Caulfield was named Skyline Coach of the Year for a second time and the Valiants earned seven All- Conference honorees, including five on the first team, and a program-record five ABCA All-Region selections. The 2006 Valiants also qualified for the postseason, advancing to the ECAC Metro Tournament and finishing the year 22-19, including a 13-5 mark in the Skyline Conference. In his first season of 2005, Caulfield led the Valiants to a 23-15 mark, setting a program record for wins by a first-year coach and earning Skyline Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time. He also coached a program-record eight All-Conference honorees, including an amazing six players on the All- Skyline first team. Before taking the head coaching reigns of the Valiant program, Caulfield worked as an assistant at Manhattanville from 2002-04, serving as the team’s pitching coach. A 2000 graduate of New York Region power Cortland State, Caulfield was a part of the Red Dragon team for five seasons as a player and coach, helping the team to the College World Series in each year. Caulfield also earned his Master’s Degree from Mercy College in 2004. A native of Westchester County, Caulfield currently resides in Stamford, Conn.

2012 Manhattanville Baseball Media Guide 3 Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Tim Quinn Second Season • Manhattanville ’09 After a one-year absence, former Valiant pitcher Tim Quinn ’09 returned to the Manhattanville baseball program and completed his first season as an assistant coach under former mentor Jeff Caulfield in 2011. Quinn plays a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the Manhattanville baseball program, including on- and off-campus recruiting, fundraising, academic monitoring and alumni relations. On the field, Quinn works with the young Valiant pitching staff and also assists with practice and game strategy and preparation. The Holbrook, N.Y., native brings an innate knowledge of the Manhattanville program to the coaching staff following a stellar four- year career on the hill for the Valiants from 2006-09. In 27 career appearances (18 starts), Quinn posted an 8-5 record and a 4.12 ERA with 57 in 118 innings. He also walked just 28 batters in his career, and as a result his average of 2.14 walks/9 innings ranked as the lowest in school history at the time of his graduation. As a freshman, Quinn went 3-3 with a 2.28 ERA in 10 appearances, the lowest ERA by a freshman in school history and the fourth-lowest single-season ERA overall at Manhattanville. He tied his career-high wins total with three more victories in 2008 despite playing much of the year with an injured arm, an injury that required off-season surgery and kept him off the hill for almost all of his senior year. Undeterred, Quinn served as the team’s first base coach for much of the 2009 campaign before making a dramatic return to the mound on Senior Day, tossing five scoreless innings to pick up the win against Misericordia University in his final collegiate appearance. Assistant Coach Stephen Pinto Third Season • Manhattanville ’09 One of the best players ever to play the diamond for Manhattanville, Stephen Pinto ’09 completed his second season as an assistant coach with the Valiant baseball team in 2011. When not coaching the Valiants, Pinto played professionally in parts of two seasons in the independent Can-Am League with the Pittsfield Colonials (formerly the American Defenders of New Hampshire). Pinto was a four-year letterwinner with the baseball team from 2006-09, and left Purchase as one of the most decorated players in program history. Pinto was a three-time All-Region honoree and three-time All-Conference first-team selection, including his senior season in which he was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year. Pinto also earned ABCA/Rawlings Div. III Gold Glove honors as a senior after committing just one error in 128 chances in center field, making him the first Valiant ever to earn the national honor. Pinto left the school as the all-time leader in hits (224), smashing the previous record by 20, as well as total bases (295). He also ranked second in runs batted in (119) and runs scored (151), and fourth in stolen bases (85), doubles (38) and triples (9) at the time of his graduation. Pitching Coach Mike Seminara Sixth Season • Manhattanville ’05 The winningest pitcher in Manhattanville baseball history, Mike Seminara ‘05 completed his fifth season as the Valiants’ pitching coach in 2011. Not coincidentally, Seminara’s tenure with the Valiant coaching staff has coincided with the only two conference tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in program history in 2007 and 2010. Under his tutelage, Manhattanville has also produced two Conference Pitchers of the Year in 2007 and 2008 as well a Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year last season in freshman hurler Alex Basso, who led all Freedom Conference starters in ERA. In 2010, the Valiant pitching staff stepped up its game late in the season, averaging just 4.4 runs per game allowed over the final eight games of the year. In the Freedom Conference Tournament, Manhattanville allowed just 12 runs in three games as the Valiants swept their way to their first Freedom Conference championship. In his first season with the Valiant staff, Seminara watched as Manhattanville won the Skyline Conference Regular Season and Tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Seminara’s hurlers posted a 4.65 ERA and also racked up a number of conference and regional honors. Mark Barrar was named the Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned Second Team All-Region honors, while freshman closer Matt Nigro landed on the All-Conference Second Team. A 2005 graduate of Manhattanville, Seminara was a four-year letterwinner with the Valiant baseball team from 2002-05. The righthander went 17-8 with a 3.69 ERA in 36 career appearances in a Valiant uniform, ranking him as the program’s all-time leader in wins and sixth in average. He also ranks fourth with 12 career complete games at the school. Hitting/Fielding Coach Brandon Mann Third Season • Lynn ’06 Brandon Mann returns to the Manhattanville coaching staff for his third season after spending the 2011 season at Yonkers High School. In his first season with the Valiants in 2009, Manhattanville hit .356 as a team on the way to the Freedom Conference regular- season title and a berth in the Freedom Tournament championship game. Three Valiants, including infielders Kevin Murray and Chris Nastasi, were named to the All-Conference team as well. Mann began his career at Florida Atlantic University and played with the nationally ranked Owls from 2002-04. In 2003, Mann helped the team rank as high as #11 in the nation, capturing the Atlantic Sun Championship in 2003 and reaching the NCAA Coral Gables regional. In 2004, Mann transferred to Lynn University where he was the starting second baseman. In 2006, he was honored as an ESPN The Magazine South Region Academic All-American and, as a second baseman, helped the team lead the nation by turning 69 double plays. Mann originally came to the Valiants from Iona College, where he had worked since 2007 as the first assistant coach for the Gaels. He is also the owner and lead instructor at Pitch by Pitch Baseball Camp in Congers, N.Y. where he works eight weeks in the summer teaching fundamentals and helping his pupils develop their skills. 4 2012 Manhattanville Baseball Media Guide 2012 Roster/Schedule # Name Pos. Home to the Valiant baseball program since its inception in the early 1980s, Manhat- tanville Field continues to provide the Valiant squad with a clear home-field advantage. The field measures 405 feet to straight-away center field, 320 feet to right field and 330 feet to left field and provides generous power alleys for Valiant hitters. Manhattanville Field features bleacher seating down the first-base line and behind home plate, as well as scenic viewing areas on a berm above the right field fence and on the hill along the third-base line. A full, state-of-the-art scoreboard wireless scoreboard was added just beyond the left-center field wall in 2008 to provide fans with inning-by-inning scores, batter counts and all necessary in-game information, while spacious dugouts were recently renovated to provide a comfortable home for both the Valiants and their opponents. Other recent additions to the grounds have included a permanent wind screen along the outfield fence and protective barriers in front of both teams’ dugouts. Manhattanville also has the distinct advantage of having its own fenced-in bullpen located along the right field line, while opponents also have a bullpen area located just beyond its dugout on the third-base side as well. Over the last five years, the Valiant baseball team as posted an excellent 61-29 (.678) record at Manhattanville Field, including a 43-13 (.768) mark against conference opponents on the home field. Kennedy Gymnasium Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymna- sium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing home- court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video stream. New lighting was recently installed in the gym as well in order to enhance the fan and player experience. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round.

Kennedy Gym Facilities Kennedy Gym’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength & conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a full-length swimming pool and dance studio. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of the coaching staff can address their team before, during and after games, while the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker fa- cilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities, all of which are fully-staffed year round. As the day-to-day administrative home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department, the offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within the Kennedy Gym walls, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics adminis- trators and support staff. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best ac- complishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout the school year.

Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging, “it was the letters that kept me going. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004.
