  • “Golden Age”: Sônia Braga, Gael García Bernal, and Ricardo Darín
New Latin-American Stardom, the local/global stars of Latin American Cinema’s new “Golden Age”: Sônia Braga, Gael García Bernal, and Ricardo Darín Dolores Tierney, Victoria Ruétalo and Roberto Carlos Ortiz Editors’ Introduction The Latin American star system, like that in other regions, has emulated the Hollywood model in large measure because of its power to mobilize movie-going audiences. Various contributors to this collection have underscored particular ways in which regional film cultures have borrowed certain of Hollywood’s strategies to promote local star culture. Maite Conde’s discussion of fan magazines in Brazil in the 1920s (see Chapter 5), for instance, provides an early example of the ways the Hollywood star paradigm self-consciously served local interests in shaping a Brazilian national audience. Similarly, in Chapter 23 Alejandro Kelly’s focus on photography in star construction and the commercial promotion of particular stars helps us better appreciate the rich visual influence of cinema in shaping popular tastes and commodity culture in the region. In recent decades, with seminal works by Viera, López, Paranaguá and Tuñón, Latin American star studies have expanded their scope, generating sophisticated discourses on the ways in which individual stars maneuver their celebrity persona within the social, cultural and even moral projects of national and transnational communities. The authors of this chapter argue for a substantive alteration of that meta-discourse on stardom in which key Latin America actors are seen as not merely as ‘star texts’ but, to extend the metaphor, as centers of 1 ‘constellations’ of intermedial artistic and market networks in ways that transcend their status as mere entertainers.

AFRAM 220 – African-American Film Studies (5 credits) MW 11:30-12:50 F 11:30-1:20 Instructor: Sonnet Retman This course will examine the history and theory of African American filmmaking. We will explore the political and aesthetic debates central to African American film by focusing on different cinematic eras, genres and filmmakers, spanning the 1920s to our contemporary moment. Attending to independent and commercial contexts of production, we will focus primarily on black directors and producers as they confront and often confound popular representations of U.S. blackness in their own cinematic practice. We will consider the ways particular films and genres construct race, identity, and community through an engagement of class, gender, and sexuality. We will consider the implications of African American film beyond the nation, taking into account the African Diaspora and the global import of U.S. images of blackness through the medium of film. On occasion, we will view films that were not directed by African Americans if they have been important to the public discourse about U.S.

  • Estruendos, Romances Y Clanes. La Oferta Cinematográfica De Películas Argentinas En Los Multicines De Buenos Aires (1997-2008)
1 Estruendos, romances y clanes. Palabras clave: Exhibición, Buenos Aires, Cine argentino, 1997-2008 Abstract: Rather than analyzing the New Argentine Cinema (NCA), this paper explores mainstream genres of industrial cinema. Instead of focusing on the increase in film production, it focuses on the market by comparing the cultural offer with the cultural demand/ consumption. This article correlates film production and film screening by listing the films that were screened the most in Buenos Aires’ multiplexes during the 1997-2008 period, and concludes that the most popular films, which were indirectly produced by media conglomerates, convey stylistic and aesthetic conservative systems of representation.
