Press Reviews for Nine Queens Fabián Bielinsky´s trickster of a film, “Nine queens” is the kind of movie that seduces you into becoming putty in its manipulative card-sharking hands and making you enjoy being taken in by its shameless contrivalence. Stephen Holden - New York Times David Mamet might kill for a script as good as the one that fuels "Nine Queens." A seductively structured and superbly acted suspenser that breathtakingly piles swindle upon scam without giving away the game until the very end, Fabien Bielinsky's debut feature has been the biggest smash in its native Argentina in at least a decade. With a strong push from Sony Classics, there is no reason this utterly accessible genre-and-character piece shouldn't become a must-see for the "Memento" and "Amores Perros" constituencies Stateside. Todd MC Carthy CARTHY - Variety A highly enjoyable and entertaining thriller with enough twist and turns to keep audiences guessing until the very end. Frank Schreck - Hollywood Reporter Serves as further evidence that Argentina’s film industry is at the forefront of a resurgent Latin American cinema. Paul Malcolm - L.A. Weekly One of the most clever, most enjoyable thriller in years. Michael Wilmington - Chicago Tribune .

Course FS-16 LITERARY AND CULTURAL TRADITIONS IN SPANISH-SPEAKING COMMUNITIES (45 class hours) (Second semester) Lecturer: Dr. Salomé Lora Bravo ([email protected]) Substitute Lecturer: Dr. Yolanda Congosto Martín ([email protected]) Language, literature, as well as culture in general, constitute the key aspects of the identity of peoples; it is for this reason that, in order to learn a foreign language, having knowledge of the culture associated with it also gains relevance: knowing who, what, when and why ( in terms of political, religious, education-related, historical, geographical, etc. issues), knowing about (events, developments, and social concerns), as well as knowing how (that same society acts, speaks, and manifests itself). OBJECTIVES The main objective of this Course is to bring students into contact with the existing range of Spanish-speaking communities by providing them with real, thorough knowledge regarding their literary and cultural traditions, while also furnishing information on: Their values and beliefs. How they are manifested. What makes up life on a day-to-day basis, as well as their customs. Their popular traditions. What is sought as a result is that students develop: A tolerant and open-minded attitude toward other cultures. A thinking-person’s attitude toward social and cultural similarities and differences. The ability to become involved in an intercultural milieu. Empathy toward people from a wide range of different cultures. Real skills in dealing with how culture and society are seen to interact. METHODOLOGY This Course has been conceived of with highly practical intentions in mind, while deliberately tendering to students communicative and cultural interaction within real contexts.

  • Memory, History, and Entrapment in the Temporal Gateway Film
Lives in Limbo: Memory, History, and Entrapment in the Temporal Gateway Film Sarah Casey Benyahia A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies University of Essex October 2018 Abstract This thesis examines the ways in which contemporary cinema from a range of different countries, incorporating a variety of styles and genres, explores the relationship to the past of people living in the present who are affected by traumatic national histories. These films, which I’ve grouped under the term ‘temporal gateway’, focus on the ways in which characters’ experiences of temporality are fragmented, and cause and effect relationships are loosened as a result of their situations. Rather than a recreation of historical events, these films are concerned with questions of how to remember the past without being defined and trapped by it: often exploring past events at a remove through techniques of flashback and mise-en-abyme. This thesis argues that a fuller understanding of how relationships to the past are represented in what have traditionally been seen as different ‘national’ cinemas is enabled by the hybridity and indeterminacy of the temporal gateway films, which don’t fit neatly into existing categories discussed and defined in memory studies. This thesis employs an interdisciplinary approach in order to draw out the features of the temporal gateway film, demonstrating how the central protagonist, the character whose life is in limbo, personifies the experience of living through the past in the present. This experience relates to the specifics of a post-trauma society but also to a wider encounter with disrupted temporality as a feature of contemporary life.

  • “Golden Age”: Sônia Braga, Gael García Bernal, and Ricardo Darín
New Latin-American Stardom, the local/global stars of Latin American Cinema’s new “Golden Age”: Sônia Braga, Gael García Bernal, and Ricardo Darín Dolores Tierney, Victoria Ruétalo and Roberto Carlos Ortiz Editors’ Introduction The Latin American star system, like that in other regions, has emulated the Hollywood model in large measure because of its power to mobilize movie-going audiences. Various contributors to this collection have underscored particular ways in which regional film cultures have borrowed certain of Hollywood’s strategies to promote local star culture. Maite Conde’s discussion of fan magazines in Brazil in the 1920s (see Chapter 5), for instance, provides an early example of the ways the Hollywood star paradigm self-consciously served local interests in shaping a Brazilian national audience. Similarly, in Chapter 23 Alejandro Kelly’s focus on photography in star construction and the commercial promotion of particular stars helps us better appreciate the rich visual influence of cinema in shaping popular tastes and commodity culture in the region. In recent decades, with seminal works by Viera, López, Paranaguá and Tuñón, Latin American star studies have expanded their scope, generating sophisticated discourses on the ways in which individual stars maneuver their celebrity persona within the social, cultural and even moral projects of national and transnational communities. The authors of this chapter argue for a substantive alteration of that meta-discourse on stardom in which key Latin America actors are seen as not merely as ‘star texts’ but, to extend the metaphor, as centers of 1 ‘constellations’ of intermedial artistic and market networks in ways that transcend their status as mere entertainers.
