Memory, History, and Entrapment in the Temporal Gateway Film
Lives in Limbo: Memory, History, and Entrapment in the Temporal Gateway Film Sarah Casey Benyahia A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies University of Essex October 2018 Abstract This thesis examines the ways in which contemporary cinema from a range of different countries, incorporating a variety of styles and genres, explores the relationship to the past of people living in the present who are affected by traumatic national histories. These films, which I’ve grouped under the term ‘temporal gateway’, focus on the ways in which characters’ experiences of temporality are fragmented, and cause and effect relationships are loosened as a result of their situations. Rather than a recreation of historical events, these films are concerned with questions of how to remember the past without being defined and trapped by it: often exploring past events at a remove through techniques of flashback and mise-en-abyme. This thesis argues that a fuller understanding of how relationships to the past are represented in what have traditionally been seen as different ‘national’ cinemas is enabled by the hybridity and indeterminacy of the temporal gateway films, which don’t fit neatly into existing categories discussed and defined in memory studies. This thesis employs an interdisciplinary approach in order to draw out the features of the temporal gateway film, demonstrating how the central protagonist, the character whose life is in limbo, personifies the experience of living through the past in the present. This experience relates to the specifics of a post-trauma society but also to a wider encounter with disrupted temporality as a feature of contemporary life. -

Julian and Nicolas, two priests and long-standing friends, work tirelessly to help the local people. Julian uses his political connections to oversee the construction of a hospital. Nicolas joins him following the failure of a project he was leading in the jungle, after paramilitary forces assassinated members of the community. Deeply troubled, he finds a little comfort with Luciana, a young, attractive, atheist social worker. As Nicolas’ faith weakens, tension and violence between the slum’s drug-dealing cartels grow. And when work on the hospital is halted by ministerial decree, the fuse is lit... DIRECTOR - interview collective of priests known as the “Priests of the Third World”, who also suffered mysterious deaths and disappearances. -

Elefante Blanco
Rituals of Performance: Ricardo Darín as Father Julián in Elefante blanco Beatriz Urraca Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Tomo XLVIII, Número 2, Junio 2014, pp. 353-372 (Article) Published by Washington University in St. Louis DOI: https://doi.org/10.1353/rvs.2014.0031 For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/548212 Access provided by University of Washington @ Seattle (8 Jan 2017 05:25 GMT) Shortened Title 353 BEATRIZ URRACA Rituals of Performance: Ricardo Darín as Father Julián in Elefante blanco El actor argentino Ricardo Darín es indiscutiblemente la cara más conocida del cine de su país. -

“Golden Age”: Sônia Braga, Gael García Bernal, and Ricardo Darín
New Latin-American Stardom, the local/global stars of Latin American Cinema’s new “Golden Age”: Sônia Braga, Gael García Bernal, and Ricardo Darín Dolores Tierney, Victoria Ruétalo and Roberto Carlos Ortiz Editors’ Introduction The Latin American star system, like that in other regions, has emulated the Hollywood model in large measure because of its power to mobilize movie-going audiences. Various contributors to this collection have underscored particular ways in which regional film cultures have borrowed certain of Hollywood’s strategies to promote local star culture. Maite Conde’s discussion of fan magazines in Brazil in the 1920s (see Chapter 5), for instance, provides an early example of the ways the Hollywood star paradigm self-consciously served local interests in shaping a Brazilian national audience. Similarly, in Chapter 23 Alejandro Kelly’s focus on photography in star construction and the commercial promotion of particular stars helps us better appreciate the rich visual influence of cinema in shaping popular tastes and commodity culture in the region. In recent decades, with seminal works by Viera, López, Paranaguá and Tuñón, Latin American star studies have expanded their scope, generating sophisticated discourses on the ways in which individual stars maneuver their celebrity persona within the social, cultural and even moral projects of national and transnational communities. The authors of this chapter argue for a substantive alteration of that meta-discourse on stardom in which key Latin America actors are seen as not merely as ‘star texts’ but, to extend the metaphor, as centers of 1 ‘constellations’ of intermedial artistic and market networks in ways that transcend their status as mere entertainers. -

Hoeveel tijd is daarvoor nodig? Hoe begint men daaraan?
