THE HERALD ANGELS SING All That glorious song of old, FELIX MENDELSSOHN, arr DAVID WILLCOCKS (Trumpet Descant by LEE REYNOLDS) From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold: 1 Hark! the herald angels sing ‘Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, Glory to the newborn King; From Heaven’s all gracious King.’ Peace on earth and mercy mild, The world in solemn stillness lay, God and sinners reconciled: To hear the angels sing. Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies, 2 Still through the cloven skies they come With th’angelic host proclaim: With peaceful wings unfurled, Christ is born in Bethlehem. And still their heavenly music floats Hark! the herald angels sing O’er all the weary world; Glory to the newborn King. Above its sad and lowly plains, They bend on hovering wing, 2 Christ, by highest heav’n adored, And ever o’er its Babel sounds Christ, the everlasting Lord, The blessed angels sing. Late in time behold Him come Offspring of a Virgin’s womb: 3 Yet with the woes of sin and strife Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, The world has suffered long; Hail th’incarnate Deity! Beneath the angel-strain have rolled Pleased as man with man to dwell, Two thousand years of wrong; Jesus, our Emmanuel. And man, at war with man, hears not Hark! the herald angels sing, etc The love-song which they bring; O hush the noise, ye men of strife, 3 Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace! And hear the angels sing. Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, 4 For lo! the days are hastening on, Ris’n with healing in His wings; By prophet-bards foretold, Mild He lays His glory by, When with the ever circling years Born that man no more may die, Comes round the age of gold; Born to raise the sons of earth, When peace shall over all the earth Born to give them second birth. Its ancient splendours fling, Hark! the herald angels sing, etc And the whole world give back the song Which now the angels sing.
