A warm welcome to the final LSO concert of 2016, a NEW MUSIC IN TONIGHT’S CONCERT festive choral celebration that promises to raise the roof of the Barbican Hall. The stage tonight will be Tonight’s concert features performances of two filled with over 300 singers of all ages – the London new works. On This Wondrous Sea by Jonathan Symphony Chorus, LSO Community Choir and LSO Dove is a world premiere, commissioned by the Discovery Choirs – and the LSO String Ensemble and London Symphony Chorus on the occasion of the trumpeter Ryan Linham, with introductions from LSC’s 50th anniversary. There is a River by Deborah presenter Dave Neita. Conducted by , Pritchard was commissioned by LSO Discovery for the LSO and LSC’s Choral Director, they will take us the LSO Community Choir, set to words written by through an evening of Christmas music, including this evening’s presenter, Dave Neita. Simon Halsey Conductor

Simon Halsey occupies a unique position in classical Ligeti’s Le grand macabre with Sir . music. LSO Community Choir On stage

In March 2003 the LSO Community Choir performed the first concert in LSO St Luke’s, the Orchestra’s newly established venue. Comprising 30 singers living and working in the local community, it was an ambitious start. Led by LSO workshop leader and presenter Rachel Leach, the Choir sang arrangements of William Blake’s Songs of Innocence commissioned specially for the occasion.

Gareth Malone – now a television personality – was one of the singers in that first concert, and by 2004 he had taken over directing the Choir. In the programme for the Choir’s Christmas concert in 2004, he wrote ‘we regularly have 40 to 45 people at our rehearsals … I would like to see the choir grow to about 60 members’. His vision was surpassed by those wanting to take part, and by the time he left five years later there SOPRANOS ALTOS TENORS BASSES were 80 singers in the Choir’s ranks – its membership now totals 110.
