Description: Since the Paris Agreement the IPCC have called for increased action to achieve net zero carbon by 2030, including Focus on Circular Economy: Medium placing a higher price on emissions, shifting investment patterns, Impact: Encourages consideration of circular economy concepts and accelerating the transition to renewable energy and enabling inter-connectivity with wider development goals. -

ISSUE 29 Quarterly Journal - December 2018 NEWS COMMENT and ANALYSIS on SPINOUTS from UK HEIs Playing to one’s strengths As we have frequently remarked, and as the figures given in our Quarterly Journals demonstrate, spinout activity—new spinouts created, investment, exits - is highly concentrated in the South East of England. While universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, Imperial and UCL, go from strength to strength, making the most of their favourable environment - business, technology, investment - outside the ‘golden triangle’ it is not possible for universities to replicate the same conditions, and they must identify their own strengths and put them to maximum effect. We have two examples in this issue: Univeresity of Birmingham Enterprise’s account of the commercialisation collaboration between eight Midlands universities (p17), and our Spotlight feature on Swansea University (p15), which has evolved a technology transfer model tailored specifically to its own circumstances. Encouragingly, the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) currently under development acknowledges this issue, and has set out to group universities in clusters, so that universities in the most favoured environments can be assessed against their peers, and others judged by criteria more relevant to their own environments; see our report on p13. Since the publication of our previous Quarterly Journal, the sale of Spinouts UK to Beauhurst has been completed. Henry Whorwood of Beauhurst explains what this means in terms of tracking and profiling spinout companies on p8. There will be a transitional handover period, with Spinouts UK founder and editor Jonathan Harris continuing to produce the Quarterly Journals, while Beauhurst gradually takes over the data collection activities. -

Abstract This thesis demonstrates that the First World War did not have a major long-term impact on the evangelical free churches of Birmingham. Whilst many members were killed in the conflict, and local church auxiliaries were disrupted, once the participants – civil and military – returned, the work and mission of the churches mostly continued as they had before the conflict, the exception being the Adult School movement, which had been in decline prior to the conflict. It reveals impacts on local church life, including new opportunities for women amongst the Baptist and Congregational churches where they began to serve as deacons. The advent of conscription forced church members to personally face the issue as to whether as Christians they could in conscience bear arms. The conflict also speeded ecumenical co-operation nationally, in areas such as recognition of chaplains, and locally, in organising local prayer meetings and commemorations. -

Office for Life Sciences EU Exit Bulletin – 13 September 2019 OLS Introduction The Office for Life Sciences (OLS) is a joint unit between the Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC) and Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). We work across Government to help support and grow the life sciences sector in the UK and get innovative treatments to NHS patients faster. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide you with information about the steps that businesses can take to be prepared if the UK leaves the EU without a deal. Please help us reach your suppliers, clients, customers and members by forwarding or sharing the content. We will aim to send this bulletin on a weekly basis. Get Ready for Brexit campaign: The government has launched a ‘Get Ready for Brexit’ public information campaign. The campaign sets out what the public and businesses might need to do to get ready to leave the EU on 31 October. Businesses can visit to access advice www.gov.uk/brexit Business Readiness Roadshow The government is delivering a series of ‘One HMG’ events, running from Monday 16 September to 18 October. There will be 30 events across the UK, talking face-to-face with businesses, aiming to ensure that as many businesses are preparing for Brexit as possible. Businesses can sign-up here. Next week’s events will be in: Northampton (16 September), Nottingham (17 September), West Midlands (18 September), Swindon (19 September), and London (20 September). Brexit Readiness Fund BEIS have announced a £10m Business Readiness Fund for business organisations and trade associations to support businesses to prepare for a ‘No Deal’ Brexit.
