WHAT DO YOU THINK? We love to hear what you have to say about OUR HOMES Windsor & Essex County. We thought we would share some of our recent feedback. Enjoy!

OUR HOMES has provided an impeccable platform for capturing a precise and interested target market. They have increased our brand exposure and continue to aid in the expansion of my small business. STORY NANCY BELGUE Water, water, everywhere. The focal point of the grand solarium is the lake views. RIGHT: Architectural Designer Phil Fernandes. This is the PHOTOGRAPHY MAX WEDGE second home the homeowners have commissioned from Fernandes. “These clients have given me the opportunity to design great examples of architecture. I’m very fortunate each time a client has full confidence in my HOME work; together we created something special and unique,” he says. WITH A view Breathtaking is the only word that applies. Walking in the door of this grand home literally takes your breath away. The view onto the vast expanse of Lake Erie may be the star attraction but the design… oh, the design is mouth watering. Designed by Phil Fernandes of Philip Fernandes Designs and built by the owners, the French Normandy-style home comprises a total of 10,000 square feet of thoughtful choices, old-world finishes (Tiedeman Construction) and dramatic Bmillwork (Trim Choice Wood Products Inc. and Truax Lumber) on two levels. The Owen Sound ledgerock on the exterior was expertly installed by Pillar Masonry. A two-year commitment, each and every stone was chiseled by hand. Indeed, from the grand approach up the drive, to the foyer, to the salon, to the soaring ceilings in the kitchen (BetterMade Cabinets) there is something beautiful, original and glorious to see. But let’s begin with the view. The homeowners purchased the five-acre lakefront property in 2011 with the intention to build a home that would do justice to the sweeping views, the sandy beach and southern exposure. “I can look out from my terrace and see the place on the dock where I used to fish with my father,” comments the homeowner as she points toward the Kingsville harbour. “I grew up here, moved away, but always wanted to come back. It’s safe to say, I’m back to stay.” Continued on page 25

The couple are devoted to their four grown children and eight grandchildren – all of whom are frequent visitors. A professional-level cook, the homeowner, who indeed spent several years as a restaurateur, spent a significant amount of time and attention designing her kitchen. Working with the staff at BetterMade Cabinets, she fashioned the most glamourous yet functional kitchen imaginable. Every major room in the home is situated to provide panoramic views of the lake and the kitchen is no exception. The eat-in area is tucked into a southern corner that gives the homeowners a flood of light as the sun moves from east to west every day. For a quick snack, the granite island (Dimanti Stone Works), with its comfortable bar stools, is a place to sit and chat while the cook creates marvellous meals inspired by her fantastic surroundings. The ceilings throughout the home deserve a special mention. From the barrel ceiling in the foyer, the timber truss and cathedral ceiling in the family room, the quatrefoil ceiling canopy over the kitchen and the fireplace that dominates the room. Opening onto a stone terrace that coffered oval ceiling centrepiece in the dining room – each and every seems to have been transported from Italy, the great room is grand – yet ceiling in the home has been crafted with care, attention to detail and welcoming and comfortable all at once. for maximum effect. “The ceilings were a particular passion of the “We love this terrace,” say the homeowners. “We agreed to design homeowners,” says Fernandes. “In a home as grand as this one, each it so that the seating area would be angled to give us the best possible ceiling is like an art piece and is unique.” view of the lake and the spot on the dock where I fished with my dad. It comprises a master bedroom with its own private deck and hot tub overlooking the water, an en suite with an expansive unique walk-in shower, custom , and a walk-in closet that houses its own laundry facilities (one of two fully equipped laundry rooms in the home). The home’s electronic system was designed and installed by Dave Cartier of APW Custom Home Theatres. “We cannot say enough about Dave,” the homeowners comment. “He was absolutely amazing to work with. THE PLACE: Founded 25 years ago by Vern Myslichuk, BetterMade Cabinets is a Windsor institution. Known for craftsmanship and design, BetterMade is also one of the true custom cabinetmakers in Windsor. “You can go to the showroom and see it being built,” says Myslichuk. “Walk through the shop and talk to the guys. And because we actually manufacture right here, most times if there’s any kind of a situation we can turn it around in five minutes, not five days.”

THE STYLE: Craftsmanship is key. Hand- built, custom, quality cabinetry takes the lead and all else follows. BetterMade prides itself on producing unique, one-of- a-kind designs. They are known for thinking outside the box: enclosed bulkheads, FAVOURITES: curved and detailed Myslichuk loves classics is quartz,” says Myslichuk. “It is a harder mouldings are just some of their specialties. like hand-carved mouldings but is product requiring no maintenance and The showroom’s high-gloss, curved quick to point out that “we also love no sealers.” Customers are always on reception counter is a perfect example to do something that is just a little the lookout for “that unique thing,” of their touch with modern design. “Not unique – things that take cabinetry to comments Myslichuk. “Because of the everyone can do it,” points out Myslichuk. a new level.” BetterMade may be best Internet they come with ideas, and “Our niche is very much a custom niche. known for its skill with wood but it is also because we’ve been in it for 25 years we Over the course of several years, a number expert at design-forward, modern looks. can expand on it. Taking a walk through the quiet, tree-lined streets of Olde Riverside is like strolling through a village where friends greet each other, know the names of your children and invite you over for dinner. It is for precisely this reason that CONDO LIVING devotees of the neighbourhood find it impossible to leave. Welcome to Rivertown Terrace condominiums – a beautifully designed development in the heart of one of Windsor’s most beloved neighbourhoods. Many of the people who are moving into condos want to spend half the year in Florida or pursue other travels. They want to lock their door and leave without having to worry about who is going to maintain their property while they’re away. But they also like the idea of ownership.” Continued on page 40
