Our thanks go to them. The Editor’s Meanderings Mick Fitzgibbons Interchange Editor As spring heads towards summer the change marks the start of the boating season. Its been an unusually dry spring and a time when one or two of us will be thinking of carrying out some essential maintenance. But there is always the attraction of the first boating trip out onto the canal and the ever pleasant thought “I can catch-up on that little job later.“ However, after all the spit and polish that has been applied to the basin in preparation for the open weekend, it might well have blunted the enthusiasm for some. This edition of Interchange has a slightly different format than previously. More people involved in the organisation of the trust and social activities are providing regular updates. Some updates will appear in each edition while others will appear from time to time. Open Weekend 2017 Gill Reynolds Honorary Secretary What a huge success … not just in terms of money raised but in the number of members involved in volunteering to help both in the planning stage and over the 2 days of the event. Although a bit cold and overcast to start, the weather improved and Sunday was a glorious day. The weather is always a determinant in the amount of money we raise and certainly people were putting their hands in their pockets to donate to the Trust. Over the weekend we raised a massive £5400 !!!!! Thanks to everyone involved in whatever way, from car parking to cooking. The spirit of the weekend was amazing with feedback showing that 99% of stall holders were satisfied with the organisation of the weekend. Students from Halesowen College came to help with litter picking before the event and two of them helped over the entire weekend. There was an eclectic mix of music which catered for all musical tastes and games and quizzes to keep the children interested (and parents too !) . So a huge THANK YOU on behalf of the Governing Council. Send any contributions to me at [email protected] Balsam Bashing on the Dudley No 2 Gill Reynolds Honorary Secretary On 4th June 11 eager Sea Cadets arrived at Hawne Basin ready to attack the Himalayan Balsam that is beginning to take over the towpath on the off side of the canal by Coombes Bridge. This was part of deal struck with their leader in exchange for the Cadets spending a weekend cruising to Birmingham in July on our historic boats, Atlas and Malus. The young people made a brilliant start on eradicating the balsam which is a non native very invasive species. We will need to continue this each year to ensure that our native species are not overwhelmed. (Maybe a job for volunteers hours !!) The Youth Project is continuing its work with a range of young people including the students from Halesowen College who helped at the Open Weekend. One of the students enjoyed himself so much that he has left his details so we can contact him to help in 2019. 60 pupils from Paganel Primary School in Weoley Castle (Birmingham ) took part over 2 days in an adventure and learning day. They had the opportunity to go out on a trip on Hawne (thanks to Tony and Mick) They spent time with Ruth in the Cabin learning about canal art and having an opportunity to have a go themselves. The third activity involved a walk around the basin learning about boats, canals , animals, birds and coming up with an amazing array of unusual and well thought out questions. Thanks to Pam and Sheila for their support with this … I lost my voice for 2 days after the event! The school staff had a wonderful day and could not believe how well behaved the children were. These events are so worth while in engaging large numbers of children with learning about the canals … but we do need more people to get involved. If you are interested in supporting the Youth Project in whatever way please contact Gill at the Trust. The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential Gill Reynolds Honorary Secretary The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential continues its success with a trip having taken place over the Easter holidays and a further 6 trips due over the summer and October half term. Richard Parry unveiled the Living Waterways Award achieved by the Project and has asked his own Youth Officer to contact the Trust to discuss how we may be able to work together. Work will start shortly on the refurbishment of the shed next to the Club House to equip it as a Youth Project shed. Students from Carillion will be coming in July to batten out, insulate and board the walls and ceiling as part of their Community Work contribution. Volunteers will then be needed to put up kitchen units and paint the shed ... so please let Gill or Sheila know if you are an expert on flat pack and good with a roller !!! Where, When and What Conundrum? An occasional series of conundrums. Intended to be a little bit different. Rather than waiting until the next issue. The answer will be given at the bottom of the 'Events Page.' Who at Hawne Basin said: "The single most important piece of advice I would give to anyone planning on selling their house and living on a narrowboat is this. Get the wife and the kids and hire out a boat in March. Then spend two weeks on it. After that you'll either be committed to the lifestyle or heading for a divorce." Thanks to Terry on Gosty Lass who loaned me a folder of information on Hawne Basin for inadvertently providing the above Conundrum. Volunteer Circular Sheila Campbell Volunteer Coordinator Volunteer Hours Scheme Here we are, approaching the end of our second year of the scheme and what a good year it has been. A tremendous amount of good work has been done around the Basin, both throughout the year and during the maintenance weekend. The amount of painting, gardening and general work that has gone on has been wonderful. Thank you to all who have participated. The site looked fabulous for the open weekend, but it wasn't only the looks that had changed! The level of camaraderie and working togetherness was commented on, not only by our own members, but by stall holders and general public. I signed in 76 volunteers and over 800 hrs were logged over the weekend itself - not including all the peripheral hours that were put in on the organising etc. The aim of the Volunteer Hours Scheme was always to encourage moorers to become part of the community and take ownership of the Basin. I think we have travelled a fair way down that road. Well done everyone. The next year of the scheme commences 1st July with the same requirement of 20 hours or £200. Please make sure you have logged your hours on your boat sheets for this year, as only hours logged qualify. SOCIAL CLUB REVIEW 2016 – 2017 Chris Turner Social Committee Secretary. Hello Folks – As the last Interchange came into being before the close of the non-cruising Season (well for most of us anyway!) I thought I’d pen a Review of the past Season for the June Interchange instead. It has been a fulfilling and interesting Season from October 2016 to April 2017. We lost five members of the Committee and gained two. Maureen and Mick Morley, Joan Kenn and Keith and Mick Cook all left us and we would like to express our thanks for all the work they have put in over the past Seasons. Pam Kallender and Jeff Stanton have joined our Committee and have already given us great and helpful input. A great big welcome to them. You will probably have noticed the rather large white box next to the window in the Cabin. This was donated to us by John and Janet Smith. Chris and Pam couldn’t believe their eyes when they opened the door of this great big wonderful freezer. It has made their jobs in the kitchen (ie buffets, Christmas lunches, Open Weekend food etc) so much easier as it has so much storage. Thank you so very much John and Janet!! Because of the positioning of the new freezer (and believe me there was nowhere else we could have put it) the coat hooks had to be moved to the opposite wall but there doesn’t seem to have been any difficulty with this alteration.
