Governors' Report 2013 Donemana Primary School Governors’ Report 2013 - 2014 Foreword It gives me great pleasure to present to you the 2013/2014 Board of Gover- nors’ report for Donemana Primary School. You will be able to clearly see from the Calendar of Events and reports just how busy and varied a school year it has been for all of the pupils in our school. As a teacher myself, I have found it very impressive to note the huge opportunities and examples of good practice that are clearly evident in school. In the short time that I have been involved with Donemana Primary School, I have been very impressed with the leadership provided by our Principal, Mrs Hay, and the hard work, motivation, commitment and teamwork shown by all members of staff within school. There is a very positive, warm atmosphere and ethos within Donemana Primary, which would be the envy of many schools. We are indebted and very fortunate to have such a gifted and committed teaching and support staff entrusted with the educational and personal devel- opment of our young people. It is well known that the most successful schools work in partnership with the parents of their children. I would encourage all of you to get as involved as you can be with the work of the school because education does work. As par- ents, we are our child’s first teacher and have a vital role to play. With your support, your child can achieve in education and improve their life chances. I would have no doubt that by working in partnership your child can be the best they can be. In conclusion, I would like to pay tribute to the work of the outgoing Board of Governors, and especially the leadership provided by Rev Dr Stewart Jones who acted so diligently as Chairman. The next few years will continue to be a challenge in the face of continuing budget restraints, curriculum demands and the prospect of an impending Inspection. I have every confidence however that Donemana Primary School will continue to flourish and that the school will actively serve the needs of our local community. We had the wonderful experience of having Rev Jones in our school on a regular ba- sis and enjoyed his stories during assemblies. He was an excellent advocate of our school and always supported us in all the work that we do. He was chairman of our Board of Governors for some time and expertly guided our school through the many changes there have been over the years.     A Seed is Sown 1884-1900 (1) Before the GAA From the earliest times, the people of Ireland, as of other countries throughout the known world, played ball games'. Games played with a ball and stick can be traced back to pre-Christian times in Greece, Egypt and other countries. In Irish legend, there is a reference to a hurling game as early as the second century B.C., while the Brehon laws of the preChristian era contained a number of provisions relating to hurling. In the Tales of the Red Branch, which cover the period around the time of the birth of Christ, one of the best-known stories is that of the young Setanta, who on his way from his home in Cooley in County Louth to the palace of his uncle, King Conor Mac Nessa, at Eamhain Macha in Armagh, practised with a bronze hurley and a silver ball. On arrival at the palace, he joined the one hundred and fifty boys of noble blood who were being trained there and outhurled them all single-handed. He got his name, Cuchulainn, when he killed the great hound of Culann, which guarded the palace, by driving his hurling ball through the hound's open mouth. From the time of Cuchulainn right up to the end of the eighteenth century hurling flourished throughout the country in spite of attempts made through the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), the Statute of Galway (1527) and the Sunday Observance Act (1695) to suppress it. Particularly in Munster and some counties of Leinster, it remained strong in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Although completed in June of 2017 the study highlighted a number of areas – e.g. clarification around access- which would benefit from additional scrutiny and analysis. The Two Loughs working group agreed to investigate with a view to populating the report with the additional information where it existed. This review exercise also identified other sources of information which were also integrated into the original report to add value. 2.0 Executive Summary Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC), Loughs Agency and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs’ Inland Fisheries Division have come together to investigate options for developing a number of still water (and other) sites located- within the DCSDC council catchment- as angling, recreational and heritage hubs.

Context Bready Jubilee Primary School is situated in the village of Bready midway between Londonderry and Strabane. The children who attend the school come from the local villages of Bready and Magheramason and the surrounding rural area. There has been an increase in enrolment over the past four years and currently stands at 131. Four of the teaching unions which make up the Northern Ireland Teachers’ Council (NITC) have declared industrial action primarily in relation to a pay dispute. This includes non-co-operation with the Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI). Prior to the inspection, the school informed the ETI that none of the teachers would be co-operating with the inspectors. The ETI has a statutory duty to monitor, inspect and report on the quality of education under Article 102 of the Education and Libraries (Northern Ireland) Order 1986. Therefore, the inspection proceeded and the following evaluations are based on the evidence as made available at the time of the inspection.
