Conventions of This Guide
The VINTAGE NINJA Movie & TV Guide VOL. 1: JAPAN, LIVE ACTION — 1920s-1980s © Keith J. Rainville, 2021 You want to see the movies Sho Kosugi grew up watching, the ones that inspired animation designers and video game artists of the 80s and 90s, the ones the James Bond people ripped off in the 60s, but where to start? Or, you’ve amassed a collection of these gems already but know there’s more out there. Here’s a user- friendly reference for both pursuits, with quick-and-easy recommendations for Japanese ninja titles from the silent era to the late 80s — their general flavor and tone, varying trends and tropes, and a lot of surprises. CONVENTIONS OF THIS GUIDE: • TITLES — for better or worse I’ve used the most commonly used translations out there. These are often the most accessible references to these films so, even if the title’s been butchered, there’s still a practical advantage when searching them out. • VN as an entity has to be cautious when it comes to supporting/endorsing certain not-so-authorized film collecting activities out there, so sorry, there’s no links here... • YES THERE’S MORE TO COME! This will be updated often and I have a huge stack of discs and files awaiting input. Plus future volumes on Anime, Japan 1990—present, Hong Kong/Chinese films, ninja-like hooded heroes, and more. • Yes, we welcome corrections and additions. Email me through the website. • See the Appendixes at the end for more info! Images © Shochiku Co., Ltd, 1965. Text © Keith J. -

Graveyards of Honor Press Release.Indd
PRESS RELEASE GRAVEYARDS OF HONOR (Cert TBC) RELEASE DATE On Blu-ray 7th September, 2020 Two peerless masters of Japanese cinema – Kinji Fukasaku Running time 94/131 mins (Battles without Honor and Humanity, Battle Royale) and Price £44.99 Takashi Miike (Dead or Alive, Audition) – present their own distinctive adaptations of yakuza expert Goro Fujita’s Region B gangster novel Graveyard of Honor, each tapping into the zeitgeist of a distinct period of Japanese history. KEY TALENT INFORMATION Set during the turbulent post-war years, Fukasaku’s original 1975 fi lm charts the rise and fall of real-life Director • Kinji Fukasaka / Takashi Miike gangster Rikio Ishikawa (Tetsuya Watari, Outlaw Gangster VIP). Shot through with the same stark realism and quasi- documentarian approach as Fukasaku’s earlier Battles CONTACT/ORDER MEDIA Without Honor and Humanity, Fukasaku nonetheless breaks new ground through his portrayal of a gangster [email protected] utterly without honor or ethics, surviving by any means necessary in a world of brutal criminality. Meanwhile, Miike’s 2002 retelling transplants the story to Tokyo at the turn of the millennium. Less a direct remake of Fukasku’s fi lm than a radical reimagining of the same overarching premise, Miike’s fi lm captures both the hedonism and nihilism of the modern Japanese crime scene in deliriously stylish fashion, resulting in a fascinating companion piece to the original that nonetheless stands as its own entity. With both fi lms making their High Defi nition debut in a sumptuous limited edition packed with new and archival bonus content, Arrow Video is proud to present these two intertwined but unique crime thrillers from two celebrated fi lmmakers at the peak of their creative powers. -

Yuji soon takes up with a hot springs geisha, the lover of a local boss, whose gang is facing stiff competition from an outside rival. After spending three years in prison for stabbing a hitman from a rival gang, Goro comes out disenchanted with yakuza life. When he decides to abandon gangster life entirely, tragedy intervenes, and he sets out for revenge. Big-shot cop Mikami Yujiro Ishihara fatally shoots a witness during a drug investigation and moves to the country to forget his tainted past. Years later, he returns to Yokohama to unravel the truth about the unsolved case and his shady ex-partner, now married to the woman he loves. Before he can achieve this, he becomes the unwilling savior of a pure-hearted, simple-minded prostitute Izumi Ashikawa on the run from her pimp. Hiding out in Kobe, life spices up for reckless gangster Goro Tetsuya Watari when he meets a gorgeous rich girl, in town investigating the disappearance of her fiance. A Tarantino Inspired Film Series
Killing Bill: a Tarantino inspired film series Bel Destefani Intro to MIAP December 7, 2010 Destefani 1 When people ask me if I went to film school I tell them, “No, I went to films.” —Quentin Tarantino In the fall of 2009 and spring of 2010 I interned for a Durham, N.C.-based documentary film festival, Full Frame. While I sat through the numerous five-hour selection committee meetings, I listened intently on the opinions of the committee members as to why a certain film would be right or wrong for the festival. I was fascinated by their picks. Then when the docs where chosen and the programming department—the department I interned for—had to sit down and curate which films would play in what theater, at what time and what day I became even more curious as to how they curated the entire process. Not only did my love of documentary films grow but also my curiosity for festival programming. That is why when my initial proposal of doing an oral history of the New York Film Festival fell through, my brain instantly leaped to curating a film series. When it came to deciding the topic of my film series I knew I wanted it centered around Quentin Tarantino, if only because of my knowledge and enthusiasm for his works. However, I did not just simply want to build a film series centered on his works because much of what he has done has been seen and lauded extensively within our lifetime. Instead I thought it might be interesting to examine the influences in some of his films, which are not that well known in mainstream cinema. -
