Newsletter 10/07 DIGITAL EDITION Nr ISSN 1610-2606 ISSN 1610-2606 newsletter 10/07 DIGITAL EDITION Nr. 207 - Mai 2007 Michael J. Fox Christopher Lloyd LASER HOTLINE - Inh. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Wolfram Hannemann, MBKS - Talstr. 3 - 70825 K o r n t a l Fon: 0711-832188 - Fax: 0711-8380518 - E-Mail: [email protected] - Web: www.laserhotline.de Newsletter 10/07 (Nr. 207) Mai 2007 Eine Frau sieht rot in Park Chan-wooks faszinierendem Abschluss seiner Rache-Trilogie (nach „Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance“ und „Oldboy“). Quelle: Blickpunkt:Film Ab 7. Have you ever been in a car travelling very fast on a highway and thought about jerking the steering wheel to the side? Me neither. That would be crazy. But a character who follows through on those impulses and doesn’t give a damn about the consequences was the starting point of this play. Kimberly is dangerous because she is fearless. She pours petrol over banality and sets it on fire, figuratively and literally. She doesn’t laugh unless there’s something funny. She knows she’s not the PLAYWRIGHT NOTE architect of the body and face she was given. She refutes the falsehoods we’re trained to accept.

  • A Thoroughly Wet Mess Is an Eight-Part Serial Radio Drama, Written and Directed by Aden Rolfe
MEDIA RELEASE Friday 5 June, 2015 Aden Rolfe and ABC RN’s Creative Audio Unit present A THOROUGHLY WET MESS A quick-witted radio serial set on the high seas Set to debut on ABC RN on Friday 26 June, A Thoroughly Wet Mess is an eight-part serial radio drama, written and directed by Aden Rolfe. This sophisticated mystery is Radio National’s inaugural podcast-first drama, featuring the talents of Toby Truslove (Utopia, The Strange Calls), Tina Bursill (Neighbours, The Moodys) and Mark Lee (Gallipoli, Packed to the Rafters). THE MYSTERY: In 1872, the crew of the Mary Celeste goes missing at sea, never to be heard from again. The ship doesn’t sink, the cargo is found intact and there’s no sign of foul play. So what happened? This is just what the characters intend to find out. Enter Sophie and Marc Marshall, descendants of the captain of the Celeste. They’ve been invited aboard the Mary Celeste II, a replica of her namesake, to recreate their ancestors’ fateful voyage. Once they set sail, however, it’s clear that something’s afoot. Or afloat – it’s unclear which. Will they discover what happened to the Mary Celeste before they succumb to the same fate? What’s the captain hiding in the hold? And who will the stowaway turn out to be? “The Mary Celeste is the archetypal ghost ship, and despite all the theories – pirates, aliens, seaquakes – we still don’t know what happened. That seemed a great starting point for a serial, for a story that could lurch from theory to theory in short, 12-minute episodes,” said writer-director Aden Rolfe.

The VINTAGE NINJA Movie & TV Guide VOL. 1: JAPAN, LIVE ACTION — 1920s-1980s © Keith J. Rainville, 2021 You want to see the movies Sho Kosugi grew up watching, the ones that inspired animation designers and video game artists of the 80s and 90s, the ones the James Bond people ripped off in the 60s, but where to start? Or, you’ve amassed a collection of these gems already but know there’s more out there. Here’s a user- friendly reference for both pursuits, with quick-and-easy recommendations for Japanese ninja titles from the silent era to the late 80s — their general flavor and tone, varying trends and tropes, and a lot of surprises. CONVENTIONS OF THIS GUIDE: • TITLES — for better or worse I’ve used the most commonly used translations out there. These are often the most accessible references to these films so, even if the title’s been butchered, there’s still a practical advantage when searching them out. • VN as an entity has to be cautious when it comes to supporting/endorsing certain not-so-authorized film collecting activities out there, so sorry, there’s no links here... • YES THERE’S MORE TO COME! This will be updated often and I have a huge stack of discs and files awaiting input. Plus future volumes on Anime, Japan 1990—present, Hong Kong/Chinese films, ninja-like hooded heroes, and more. • Yes, we welcome corrections and additions. Email me through the website. • See the Appendixes at the end for more info! Images © Shochiku Co., Ltd, 1965. Text © Keith J.

  • The Singing Subject
OVERTURE: The Singing Subject Hollywood's soundtrack is engendered through a complex system of displacements which locate the male voice at the point of apparent textual origin, while establishing the diegetic containment ofthe female voice. 1 In The Acoustic Mirror, one of the few film theory books that considers the female voice in cinema, psychoanalytic film theorist Kaja Silverman ascribes the female voice a place firmly within the narrative of 'classic' Hollywood (and other realist) films. 2 But as a cinematic spectator, I have experienced films where a woman's singing voice has for me transcended such limitations. My first experience of such a feeling was motivated by Songcatcher (Maggie Greenwald, 2000), a story about a 19th century musicologist, Dr Lily Penleric (Janet McTeer), who travels to the Appalachian Mountains to collect folk ballads. In Songcatcher, the women characters' singing is pleasurable and moving, but also transports me emotionally beyond the narrative.3 Such experiences of singing scenes4 provide for me a feeling that is analogous to, but also different from, the 'transcendence' of numbers in classic Hollywood film musicals.s In the classical musical, singing performances are not only expected, because of the genre, but also assisted by the use of nondiegetic music to lift the musical experience beyond the 'real' world of the narrative to a space that is most often a utopian realm. However, in Songcatcher, singing remains of the diegesis and yet for me reaches beyond the narrative world. I Kaja Silverman. The Acoustic Mirror: The Female Voice in P5ychoanalysis and Cinema.
