SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church Celebrating 92 Years 1923 - 2015 Drawing from the treasures of the Gospel and Roman Catholic Church teaching, we commit ourselves to be living examples of a community rich in faith, seeking the Kingdom of God. Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2015 The original painting is 64 in × 79 in, and was paint- ed by an unknown artist on 8 oak planks around 1630. It was covered with silver and gold around 1671. The head of Our Lady is adorned with two crowns. Two little angels lower the crown with colored glass inlays upon the smaller crown (the angels are not present on our mosaic, they are only on the original painting). The two crowns, made of pure gold, were blessed by Pope Pius XI in 1927. On July 2, 1927 a coronation ceremony took place and the painting received the title of Mother of Mercy. The painting is an unusual portrayal of Mary since she is depicted without the infant Jesus. The painting depicts the many facets of Mary. Her head is gently leaning to Her right, Her eyes are half closed, Her hands are crossed in devotion. This reminds us that She is a virgin, humble servant of the Lord, merciful Moth- er and patron of the people. At the same time, Her head is surrounded by a halo and a sun rays with twelve stars and there is a crescent moon on the bottom of the picture (“A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.“ Rev 12:1) and Her body is covered in elaborate gold and silver clothes and crowns.

Two nations – Poland and Lithuania claimed the city, and two powerful states Russia and Germany tried to include Vilnius and its area in their empires. 1387- 1500 Vilnius received the city rights from the Grand Duke of Lithuania Jogaila in 1387. It has been originally a Lithuanian town, but as the Polish- Lithuanian Union (since 1385) grew to the most powerful state in this part of Europe, Vilnius also grew rapidly becoming multicultural, vibrant, rich through crafts and commerce town. Among the newcomers were Polish and German craftsmen and Jewish refugees from persecutions in the West of Europe.

Adama Mickiewicza PL ISSN 0078-4648 w Poznaniu e-mail: [email protected] THE “MYSTERIOUS” KAZLAUSKAS: EXPLORING LITHUANIA’S MOST FREQUENT SURNAME K e y w o r d s: surname frequency, Lithuanian surnames, surname loss, genetic drift INTRODUCTION The title of the present article constitutes a deliberate reference to the 2000 article “Tajemniczy Lewandowski: O etymologiach onomastycznych” [The mysterious Lewandowski: Onomastic etymologies] by K. Skowronek (2000), in which an at- tempt was made to account on historical and etymological grounds for the ex- tremely high popularity of that seemingly unimposing surname in Poland. The surname, nevertheless, remained a mystery. In what follows, the Lithuanian sur- name Kazlauskas will be considered with a somewhat similar objective in mind. Kazlauskas1 is unquestionably a Lithuanian cognate of Kozłowski, a fact which raises a number of questions regarding the exact nature of their mutual relationship. It has been topping surname frequency lists in Lithuania for many years now, with 13008 bearers (Kazlauskas 7710, Kazlauskienė 2232, Kazlauskaitė 3066) in the year 20142, yielding the percentage of 0.37 in the total population of Lithuania3. The surname in question is, beyond any doubt, of Slavic (most likely Polish) origin as are nearly two thirds of surnames in contemporary Lithuania. This alone makes it different from Lewandowski, whose etymology remains uncertain, despite a number of likely explanations. In K. Skowronek’s (2000) article the implicit question permeating the whole discussion was: why should there be (of all the 1 Lithuanian surnames have different male and female forms, and the latter are traditionally di- vided into maritonymics that end with -ienė (e.g.

  • Our Lady of Good Counsel
Our Lady of Good Counsel According to tradition, in the year 1467, in the midst of the festivities for the Feast of Saint Mark, the townfolk suddenly heard "exquisite music." A mysterious cloud was then said to have descended and obliterated an unfinished wall of the parish church. In front of the populace, the cloud dissipated and a beautiful fresco, no thicker than a carte-de-visite and no more than eighteen inches square, of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child was revealed. It was widely believed that it had been miraculously transported from a church in Scutari, Albania. On November 17, 1682, Pope Innocent XI had the picture solemnly crowned. In 1753, Pope Benedict XIV established the Pious Union of Our Lady of Good Counsel. More than any other pope, Leo XIII, was deeply attached to this devotion. On April 22, 1903, that same Pope included the invocation "Mater boni consilii" in the Litany of Loreto. In 1939, Venerable Pope Pius XII placed his pontificate under the maternal care of Our Lady of Good Counsel and composed a prayer to her. Her feast is celebrated on April 26th. Our Lady of Aparecida Our Lady of Aparecida appeared to 3 fishermen in Brazil (Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso, and João Alves) in October 1717. The fishermen prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception that God would grant a good catch. The fishermen, having a run of bad luck, cast their nets in the River Paraiba and dragged up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary. They also salvaged the head and, according to the legend, then netted plenty of fish.

The objective required finding and determining the following: (1) factors in the establishment of shrines in Poland during this time; (2) factors in the development of shrines with reference to the transformation of religious worship and to the influence of political factors in Poland; (3) changes in pilgrimage traditions in Poland, and (4) changes in the number of pilgrimages to selected shrines. These changes were determined by archive and library research. Additionally, field studies were performed at more than 300 shrines, including observations and in-depth interviews with custodians. Descriptive–analytical, dynamic–comparative and cartographic presentation methods were used to analyze results. Keywords: pilgrimage; popular piety; sacred place; shrines; Vatican II Citation: Mróz, Franciszek. 2021. 1. • Marian Shrines in Lithuania a Pilgrimage Route Named After St
Marian shrines in Lithuania A pilgrimage route named after St. John Paul II encompasses the most significant Lithuanian sacred locations, a number of them being places of Marian devotion. For centuries visited by pilgrims and preserved by parishioners, shrines of Pivašiūnai Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Basilica in Krekenava, Žemaičių Kalvarija Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church and other Marian sanctuaries are decorated with magnificent altars and paintings dedicated to Our Lady. The paintings of Trakai Mother of God, Our Lady of Šiluva with Child and Our Lady of Mercy at the Gate of Dawn known for miracles and special graces are adorned with papal crowns. Trakai Mother of God The image of The Blessed Virgin Mary received golden crowns sent by Pope Clement XI as well as the title “Health of the Sick” in 1718. It was only the second image of Mary to be crowned outside of Rome worldwide. Since then, the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, lasting 8 days, has been celebrated every year, attracting thousands of pilgrims coming to pray to the image of The Blessed Virgin Mary, enshrined in the Basilica of Trakai. The Construction of the Basilica of Trakai was funded by Vytautas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and it is one of the very first churches built after the christening of Lithuania in the 14th century. It has been the centre of pilgrimage for those seeking graces and praying for the peace and prosperity of Lithuania since the 17th century.
