I came here just by accident while travelling from West to East, from one old culture to another, totally different one. I was in a rush, so there were no plans to make a stop. However, when passing through Lithuania, a strange sense of space and freedom – unlike anywhere else – came into my heart. And an urge to return… Therefore, in summer I came here with my entire family. All-surrounding greenness heightened that intoxicating sense of space and freedom. I could not stop admiring the purest natural water springs, mineral water, overflowing abundance of lakes and rivers seeking to find their way to the sea. Even the rain! It is somehow different here – cosy, romantic, and calling to stumble into an old town bakery, smoked fish bistro or a small amber souvenir shop. Children got enough of swimming and still share their impressions of a place that is surrounded by mysterious and extraordinary aura – the Hill of Crosses, where, among thousands of others, they left a cross of their own. They are all the time asking me to remind the name of that traditional funny-coloured cold soup that Lithuanians adore. It is a cold beetroot soup. My wife (who is a diet freak) was particularly delighted by this dish. It was so amazing when unexpectedly I had to travel to Lithuania for work in autumn! Strange coincidence: I made a wish to come back to Lithuania this summer while standing on the Miracle Tile in the heart of Vilnius – Cathedral Square. Might it be that the tile is really magic? This time I trusted the country for all the hard-working and peaceful people that I met here. These people know how to work with all their might and party from the heart, they know how to jazz and root for their favourite basketball team. After joining them I even forgot that I am a foreigner! And the beer was the best, and that strangeness of the local cuisine called “cepelinai” – really delicious... Once I even thought of living here…” Extract from the diary of John M. Marian Thoughts of Pope Francis September 2018 September 2 – Angelus –Translated conclusion (September 1, 2018, Vatican.va). May the example and intercession of the Virgin Mary help us to always honour the Lord with our heart, witnessing to our love for him in concrete choices for the good of our brothers and sisters. September 5 – General Audience –Translated extract (September 5, 2028, Zenit.org). This choice is the Virgin Mary’s “fiat”, it’s openness to the Holy Spirit, who puts us in the steps of Christ, He who entrusts himself to the Father in the most dramatic moment and thus enters the way that leads to resurrection. September 6 – Audience (International Convention for Consecrated Widows) –Translated conclusion (September 6, 2018, Zenit.org). With this hope, I entrust you to the Lord and, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, I impart to you my Apostolic Blessing, which I extend to those who are part of the Fraternité Notre Dame de la Résurrection and of the Communauté Anne la Prophetesse. September 9 – Audience (To Participants at the Communio Internationalis Benedictinarum Symposium) –Translated extract (September 9, 2018, Zenit.org). You bring a precious gift to the life of the Church through your feminine witness of goodness, faith, and generosity, imitating the Holy Mother of the Church, the Virgin Mary. You are icons of the Church and of our Blessed Mother: do not forget this. Icons … For more of what the pope said about Mary: https://zenit.org/articles/pope-to-benedictines-the-precious-gift-of-your-witness/ September 9 – Angelus –Translated conclusion (September 9, 2018, Vatican.va).

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Klaipeda University Open Journal Systems ISSN 1392-3137. Abstract After the restoration of independence (1990), the political and social economic life of the country has markedly changed. The reformation of economy according to the principles of free market has left many people without occupation; unemployment and emigration rose to unprecedented high. Emigration has transformed Lithuania’s population: the number of towns and urban population has decreased. The article deals with the dynamics of Lithuanian towns and urban population in the 21 years of independence. The main causes of transformations are pointed out, the specific transforma- tion patterns of groups of towns and territorial differences are analysed. Two groups of towns are distinguished: the towns most severely depopulated in terms of absolute indices and towns where the relative population dynamics was most noticeable.

  • Travelling in Aukštaitija National Park
AukštAITIJA NATIONAL PARK INVITES TO TRAVEL! Aukštaitija National Park (ANP) has a unique landscape of hilly lakeland characterized by great natural diversity and cultural heritage that is one of the oldest in Lithuania. This hilly lakeland area that has been formed by glaciers consists of interconnecting lakes with interfering ridges. The most picturesque is Šiliniškės Ridge with Ladakalnis fa- mous for its exceptional panoramic view, and historical complex of Ginučiai, Papiliakalnė Mound. There are 127 lakes in the parks, including the deepest Lithuanian lake - Taura- gnas. They serve as the headwaters for the river Žeimena that feeds the largest Lithuanian rivers Neris and Nemunas. The striking terrain and the cultural landscape that were formed as a result of human economic activity have determined the diversity of natural conditions and species. There are more than 4.5 thousands of plant, fungus and animal species registered in the park, and 195 of them are included in the Lithuanian Red Book. One of the most valuable and least affected by human activity territory is the old forest of Ažvinčiai. Baluošas lake is unique in that it has a lake laying in one of the islands, and wild orchids growing on the coast the most impressive being lady’s slippers (Cypripedium calceolus). The cultural heritage of this region is characterized by the largest number of prehis- toric settlements and barrows in Lithuania, the mounds of Tauragnai, Taurapilis, Sėlė, Ginučiai, Papiliakalnė, Puziniškis, and Rėkučiai fortification forming an entire system of defence, and dispersed villages of Strazdai, Šuminai, Varniškės, Vaišnoriškės and Salos that have retained their traditional arrangement.

  • KAUNAS CASTLE in the 14Th Century, a Stone Castle Was Built at the Confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers to Resist Crusaders’ Attacks
KAUNAS CASTLE In the 14th century, a stone castle was built at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers to resist Crusaders’ attacks. It was the first stone castle in Lithuania which played a significant role in the city's defence system. Kaunas Castle is a Gothic building with two rows of protective walls and is the only castle of this type in Lithuania. A settlement started forming around the castle, growing into the present-day city. RAUDONDVARIS CASTLE Approximately 9 km away from Kaunas on both sides of the highway to Jurbarkas a beautiful town of Raudondvaris welcomes you. The architectural ensemble of the town is located on the upper terrace of the river Nevėžis valley. The Raudondvaris Manor complex consists of the castle, subsidiary builings, an orangery and the stables. All the buildings are surrounded by a park. Various concerts, festivals, exhibitions and other events take place here today. BELVEDERIS MANOR Belvederis Manor is a gem of Italian Renaissance architecture from the 19th century, a villa-style structure designed by Pietro de Rosi. The unique harmony between the natural environment and the exceptional architecture gave the estate its name; Belvedere means beautiful view in Italian. The vivid beauty of the manor and park are emphasised by a unique series of 365 steps that, according to the fancy of the designers, take you from the palace to the banks of the Nemunas. VELIUONA MANOR Veliuona Manor is a fine example of Neo-Classical wooden architecture dating back to the 19th century. Two hundred years of tumultuous history have barely touched the exterior.
