The last comprehensive list (Barrio-Amorós 2009c) included a total of 333 species, while the current catalogue lists 387 species (370 anurans, 10 caecilians, and seven salamanders), including 28 species not yet described or properly identified. Fifty species and four genera are added to the previous list, 25 species are deleted, and 47 experienced nomenclatural changes. -

Esta propuesta se realiza con orientación geográfica integradora, a fin de constituir las bases de la zonificación de uso oficial de un instrumento reglamentario que se requiere para la gestión, conservación y manejo adecuado de esta área protegida. En este trabajo se resaltan los aspectos metodológicos, teniendo como herramienta la superposición y análisis de mapas temáticos. INTRODUCTION A Plant Hunter’s Paradise - Angel Falls and Auyántepui focuses on the botanical aspects of the 28 June to 6 July 2012 “Tribute to Jimmie Angel Expedition” to Auyántepui and Angel Falls/Churún Vena/Salto Angel in Canaima National Park, State of Bolívar, Venezuela. The expedition was organized by Paul Graham Stanley of Angel-Eco Tours, Caracas, Venezuela and Karen Angel of the Jimmie Angel Historical Project, Eureka, California, U.S.A. This photo essay is a brief survey of the plants seen in Canaima National Park, Caracas and Ciudad Bolívar and is not intended to be inclusive. The sections titled Native Venezuela Botanicals (pages 13-21) and Botanicals Consumed and a few Zoological Specimens (pages 22-33) were identified by Venezuelans Jorge M. Gonzalez, an entomologist, in consultation with his botanist colleagues Balentina Milano, Angel Fernandez and Francisco Delascio. In a few cases, the photographs provided to the scientists were insufficient for a definitive identification; in these cases the identifications are “informed” based on insufficient information. Editor Karen Angel, who lives in Humboldt County, coastal northern California, uses her home region as a standard for comparison for the adaptability of the plants presented to other climate zones. Humboldt County is in USDA Hardiness Zone 9b: 25° F (-3.9°C) to 30° F (-1.1°C). -

STRAHL Summary An assessment of trade in parrots throughout Venezuela, 1988-1989, reveals alarmingly high internal and international levels. The national trade has main outlets in major cities, but is now compounded by the use of feathers for Indian artifacts sold to tourists. International trade involves illegal export chiefly from the Orinoco Delta, the majority of such birds (65,000-75,000) destined for Guyana. The large macaws suffer badly from both types of trade, but owing to its restricted range the endemic Amazona barbadensis is perhaps the most critically threatened species. Other species are assessed and, along with key sites, identified in priority order for remedial action, which should include more detailed field studies, rigorous trade data analysis, exchange of trade data with major neighbours, census and monitoring technique improvements, educational campaigns, and strict breeding facility control. La red de comercio national tiene puntos de venta importantes en las ciudades principales. Comercio ha incrementado debido al uso de plumas en artefactos indios de venta a turistas. El comercio international consiste principalmente en la exportation ilegal de periquitos de la Delta de Orinoco, la mayoria (65,000-75,000), destinados a Guayana. Los periquitos grandes se ven muy afectados por los dos tipos de comercio, pero dado su muy limitada distribution, el endemico Amazona barbadensis es talvez la especie mas amenazada. -

Abstract: There have been several ecological studies in forests of the Guayana Shield, but so far none had examined the changes in structure and composition of evergreen forests with altitude. This study describes and analyzes the structure, species composition and soil characteristics of forest stands at different altitudinal zones in Southeastern Venezuelan Guayana, in order to explain the patterns and the main factors that determine the structure and composition of evergreen forests along the altitudinal gradient. Inventories of 3 948 big (>10cm DBH) and 1 328 small (5-10cm DBH) woody stems were carried out in eleven plots, ranging from 0.1 to 1.0ha, along a 188km long transect with elevations between 290 and 1 395masl. It has been found that 1) hemiepihytes become more dominant and lianas reduce their dominance with increasing altitude and 2) the forest structure in the study area is size-dependent. Five families and 12 genera represented only 9% of the total number of families and genera, respectively, recorded troughout the gradient, but the two groups of taxa comprised more than 50% of the Importance Value (the sum of the relative density and the relative dominance) of all measured stems. -

After the strategic importance of minerals in the world to provide the fundamental raw materials required in everyday life, this paper provides a review and synthesis of the literature about the environmental implications of the establishment of the Orinoco Mining Arc (OMA) National Strategic Development Zone, or by its name in Spanish Arco Minero del Orinoco (AMO), created by decree No. 2.248 in February 24th, 2016 to take advantage of the potential of mining activity as an alternative to oil rent, to exploit minerals in a surface covering 111.843,70 square kilometers (12,2 % of the national territory). However, this area supports a great biological diversity and large water reserves and forestry, fragile and low resilience ecosystems to human intervention and is home to 55.000 indigenous people who belong to 22 ethnic groups. Many governments owned and foreigners companies have taken place for mineral exploitation in the region where economic development in the BR Venezuela has provoked social and environmental consequences, based on the debate is both a conflict of values and a dispute over the necessary basis for economic development.
