The last comprehensive list (Barrio-Amorós 2009c) included a total of 333 species, while the current catalogue lists 387 species (370 anurans, 10 caecilians, and seven salamanders), including 28 species not yet described or properly identified. Fifty species and four genera are added to the previous list, 25 species are deleted, and 47 experienced nomenclatural changes. -

JOURNAL OF CRUSTACEAN BIOLOGY, 2(3): 378-391, 1982 FRESH-WATER SHRIMPS (CRUSTACEA, DECAPODA, NATANTIA) OF THE ORINOCO BASIN AND THE VENEZUELAN GUAYANA Gilberto Rodriguez ABSTRACT Shrimps of the families Sergestidae and Palaemonidae collected in the Orinoco basin, the upper Cuyuni River, and the upper and lower Rio Negro, are dealt with in this paper. New records and comments are given for Acetes paraguayensis, Macrobrachium amazonicum, M. brasiliense, M. jelskii, M. nattered, M. surinamicum, and Palaemonetes carteri. Two new palaemonids are described: Macrobrachium cortezi, a form related to M. nattereri, from several localities in the Orinoco River and upper Rio Negro, and M. aracamuni, from an altitude of 680 m in the Cerro Aracamuni in the drainage area of the upper Rio Negro. Another previously undescribed species of Macrobrachium is recorded but not named due to the lack of mature males. The Guayana highland is an ancient land mass extending from the Amazon River to the Atlantic coast of South America and includes the Guianas and parts of Venezuela and Brazil. The Venezuelan Guayana comprises 41,300 km2 of territory, mostly above 400 m that separate the Orinoco from the Amazon basin and forms a formidable barrier to the dispersion of the fresh-water fauna of the lowlands. The hydrology of the zone is defined by the Orinoco River that bounds the area to the west and north and its tributaries that generally flow north or northwesterly. A smaller portion to the east is drained by the Cuyuni River. The Orinoco and the Amazon basins are connected through the Brazo Casiquiare, while the inundated savannah of Rupununi allows intermittent connections be tween the Branco and the Esequibo Rivers (Lowe-McConnell, 1964). -
Cross-Border Malaria in Northern Brazil

Arisco1, Cassio Peterka2 and Marcia C. Castro1* Abstract Background: Cross-border malaria is a major barrier to elimination eforts. Along the Venezuela-Brazil-Guyana bor- der, intense human mobility fueled primarily by a humanitarian crisis and illegal gold mining activities has increased the occurrence of cross-border cases in Brazil. Roraima, a Brazilian state situated between Venezuela and Guyana, bears the greatest burden. This study analyses the current cross-border malaria epidemiology in Northern Brazil between the years 2007 and 2018. Methods: De-identifed data on reported malaria cases in Brazil were obtained from the Malaria Epidemiological Sur- veillance Information System for the years 2007 to 2018. Pearson’s Chi-Square test of diferences was utilized to assess diferences between characteristics of cross-border cases originating from Venezuela and Guyana, and between border and transnational cases. A logistic regression model was used to predict imported status of cases. Results: Cross-border cases from Venezuela and Guyana made up the majority of border and transnational cases since 2012, and Roraima remained the largest receiving state for cross-border cases over this period. There were sig- nifcant diferences in the profles of border and transnational cases originating from Venezuela and Guyana, including type of movement and nationality of patients. Logistic regression results demonstrated Venezuelan and Guyanese nationals, Brazilian miners, males, and individuals of working age had heightened odds of being an imported case. -

Abstract: A new subspecies of the common species Morpho menelaus (Linnaeus, 1758) is described from north-eastern Venezuela, and named Morpho menelaus chantalae Neild, Johnson & Blandin ssp. nov. Its relationship with M. menelaus orinocensis Le Moult, 1925, described from the Orinoco Delta, is discussed. The discovery of this new taxon emphasises the importance of the conservation of forest ecosystems in north-eastern Venezuela, where the distribution and diversification of species may have been driven by local geodynamics and the evolution of ecological contexts. -

MARACAS IN THE VENEZUELAN JOROPO: A PROPOSED PEDAGOGICAL NOTATIONAL SYSTEM by STEPHEN PATRICK PRIMATIC (Under the Direction of THOMAS MCCUTCHEN) ABSTRACT Venezuelan maraca players are highly skilled musicians who must learn many techniques in order to play the instrument properly. To date, there is no notational system that takes into account the myriad of techniques needed to play this instrument. This document proposes a notational system for Venezuelan maracas. The history of the instrument and its use in indigenous music is examined along with notational problems inherent in percussion writing. It comprises the largest initiative to estimate pop- ulation size and densities of Inia and Sotalia dolphins using statistically robust and standardized methods. From May 2006 to August 2007, seven visual surveys were conducted in selected large rivers of Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. Population sizes of Inia and Sotalia were estimated for different habitats (main river, tributary, lake, is- land, confluence, and channel). A total of 291 line and 890 strip transects were conducted, covering a distance of 2,704 linear kilometers. We observed 778 Inia geoffrensis,1,323Inia boliviensis,and764Sotalia fluviatilis.High-densityareaswere identified (within 200 m from the river banks, confluences, and lakes) and we pro- pose that these constitute critical habitat for river dolphins. -

Colombia’s difficult relations with its neighbours: Venezuela (part 2). ∗ Carlos Malamud Of all Colombia’s borders(1) with its neighbours, the one it shares with Venezuela is the most active and troublesome. Ample proof of this was provided in the last days of 2003 by the deaths of nine Venezuelan national guardsmen, following a series of clashes between the National Guard and Colombian paramilitaries (2). But as well as this recent escalation of tension, this 2,219 kilometre-long border has its daily ration of criminal activities, such as terrorist actions by paramilitary and guerrilla fighters, the comings and goings of drug traffickers and all kinds of rustlers and smugglers. The border is also a kind of privileged vantage point from which to witness the on-going deterioration of the Venezuelan economy, aggravated as it is by the evolution of the exchange rate between the dollar and the bolívar that has had a negative effect on cross-border trade (in one direction, at least). In 2000, the border with Venezuela was the richest and most dynamic of the five Colombia shares with its neighbours. In Colombian territory, the departmental per capita GDP was slightly over 3,100,000 pesos, a much higher figure than that of the other border areas. Things have changed drastically, however, in the past few years, due mainly to the deterioration of the Venezuelan economy as a result of the bad economic policies of Hugo Chávez and the poor management of a succession of economics ministers.
