JONATHAN POTTER ANTIQUE MAPS CATALOGUE SUMMER 2012 INTRODUCTION 2012 was always going to be an exciting year in London and Britain with the long- anticipated Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the holding of the Olympic Games. To add to this, Jonathan Potter Ltd has moved to new gallery premises in Marylebone, one of the most pleasant parts of central London. After nearly 35 years in Mayfair, the move north of Oxford Street seemed a huge step to take, but is only a few minutes’ walk from Bond Street. 52a George Street is set in an attractive area of good hotels and restaurants, fine Georgian residential properties and interesting retail outlets. Come and visit us. Our summer catalogue features a fascinating mixture of over 100 interesting, rare and decorative maps covering a period of almost five hundred years. From the fifteenth century incunable woodcut map of the ancient world from Schedels’ ‘Chronicarum...’ to decorative 1960s maps of the French wine regions, the range of maps available to collectors and enthusiasts whether for study or just decoration is apparent. Although the majority of maps fall within the ‘traditional’ definition of antique, we have included a number of twentieth and late ninteenth century publications – a significant period in history and cartography which we find fascinating and in which we are seeing a growing level of interest and appreciation. [Amsterdam, 1621 or later, but before 1650] 687x868mm. Copper engraving on parchment, coloured by a contemporary hand. Cropped, as usual, on the neat line, to the right cut about 5mm into the printed area. The imprint is on places somewhat weaker and /or ink has been faded out. One small hole (1,7x1,4cm.) in lower part, inland of Russia. As often, the parchment is wavy, with light water staining, usual staining and surface dust. First state of two. The title and imprint appear in a cartouche, crowned by the printer's mark of Willem Jansz Blaeu [INDEFESSVS AGENDO], at the center of the lower border. Scale cartouches appear in four corners of the chart, and richly decorated coats of arms have been engraved in the interior. The chart is oriented to the west. It shows the seacoasts of Europe from Novaya Zemlya and the Gulf of Sydra in the east, and the Azores and the west coast of Greenland in the west. In the north the chart extends to the northern coast of Spitsbergen, and in the south to the Canary Islands. The eastern part of the Mediterranean id included in the North African interior. The chart is printed on parchment and coloured by a contemporary hand. The colours red and green and blue still present, other colours faded. An intriguing line in green colour, 34 cm long and about 3mm bold is running offshore the Norwegian coast all the way south of Greenland, and closely following Tara Polar Arctic Circle ! Blaeu's chart greatly influenced other Amsterdam publisher's. -

A Christian Psychologist Looks at The Da Vinci Code April 2006 Stephen Farra, PhD, LP, Columbia International University For information about reprinting this article, please contact Dr. Farra at [email protected] Understanding the Agenda behind The Da Vinci Code A number of scholarly, thoughtful responses to The Da Vinci Code have already been produced by other members of the Christian community. These other responses, though, tend to concentrate on historical and factual errors, and the false conclusions these errors can produce. This response is different. While this response also highlights several historical/factual errors in the text of The Da Vinci Code, this response attempts to go to the conceptual and spiritual essence of the book. Instead of focusing on mistakes, and what is obviously distorted and deliberately left out, this response focuses on what is actually being presented and sold in the book. It is the thesis of this review that what is being presented and sold in The Da Vinci Code is Wicca – Neo-paganism, modern Witchcraft, “the Wiccan Way.” People need to make up their own minds on this important issue, however. A comparative chart, and numerous other quotations / examples are employed to present the evidence, and make the case. The Da Vinci Code is not just a novel. If that is all it was or is, there would be no need for the page boldly labeled "FACT” (all capital letters). The FACT page is page 1 in the book, the last printed page before the Prologue, the true beginning of the story. On the FACT page, the author(s) try to convince you that they have done a good job of researching and fairly representing both the Priory of Sion and Opus Dei, and then go on to boldly proclaim: "All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate." This "novel" is really a deconstructionist, post-modern attempt to re-write history, with a hidden agenda deeply embedded within the deconstructionist effort. -

#432 Americæa Pars Borealis, Florida, Baccalaos, Canada, Corterealis Description: Cornelis de Jode’s map of North America is preceded only by the separately issued Forlani/Zaltieri map of 1565 (#391), and an extremely rare separately issued map. Together with a smaller western sheet, Quivirae, this was the first folio sized atlas map to focus on North America. The plates were purchased by J.B. Vrients who kept de Jode’s work out of publication in favor of Ortelius’ Theatrum. The French, like the British, resented the exclusive Iberian franchise on new lands dictated by the papal demarcation line, and tried to stake out claims of their own in what is now the United States. They targeted the region of northern Florida, officially in the Spanish sphere of influence. Although it had been abandoned by Spain as a region of serious exploration by a decree of Philip II in 1561, French presence there was nonetheless viewed as trespassing. The experience of France’s first attempt to colonize northern Florida, in 1562, is sadly parallel to what would happen to the British in Roanoke two decades later. Jean Ribault and Rene Goulaine de Laudonniere commanded the mission, which crossed the Atlantic directly from the French port of Havre de Grace to North America, rather than sailing the more common route through the Spanish Main and north. De Jode has written Laudnner hue. appulit and Ribaldus hue, at their landfall on the Florida peninsula. From there, they reconnoitered north, reaching a large river they named Mai because they found it on the first day of May. -

AAM of Chapter Six of Pacific Futures: Past and Present, ed. Warwick Anderson, Miranda Johnson, and Barbara Brookes, 131–54 (Honolulu: University of Hawai’i Press, 2018) Imagined Futures in the Past: Empire, Place, Race and Nation in the Mapping of Oceania Bronwen Douglas Abstract Since 1511, recurrent couplings of fact and fantasy, the familiar and the imagined, have driven the European invention, naming, mapping and regionalization of the fifth part of the world, known as Oceania after 1815. Using comparative critique of maps as historical texts, this chapter investigates the relationships of experience, expectation and hope in cartography’s varied graphic realization or anticipation of religious, imperial, scientific, racial, colonial, national and digital visions. I outline successive vignettes of the spatial framing of the fifth part of the world or Oceania as mapped and named from the sixteenth century—in early modern geopolitics, in shifting global visions from the Renaissance to the late eighteenth century, and in regional cartography from the mid-eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. The vignettes conjoin to show how uneasy liaisons of empirical observation, imagination, desire and deductive reasoning generated Euro-American maps, culminating in the appropriated colonial palimpsest that underlies modern maps of Oceania’s states. I conclude by reflecting briefly on the present and future implications of digitization, with its paradoxical blend of democratization and dehumanization, for cartography, its history and its audiences. Verkenning Van De Historische Cartografie in De Cultuurbibliotheek
Verkenning van de historische cartografie in de Cultuurbibliotheek Inleiding De klassieke oudheid en de geschiedenis van de Nederlanden zijn bijzondere belangstellings- punten van de bibliotheek. De cartografie in de CB ligt dan ook hoofdzakelijk in het verlengde daarvan. Historische cartografie handelt over de kaarten van voor ca. 1800. Historische kaarten zijn kaarten die een toestand in het verleden weergeven. Ook oude kaarten kunnen historische kaarten zijn. Bv. Belgii veteris typus ex conatibus geographicis Abrahami Ortelii (CB 2011/2028). Historische kaarten worden vooral gebruikt als geschiedkundige bron en gewaardeerd om hun esthetische waarde. Topografische kaarten werden soms geheim- gehouden uit strategische overwegingen. Militaire kaarten echter zijn kaarten die voor de eer en glorie van vorsten of bevelhebbers gemaakt werden. Ze tonen de opstelling van de legers in het landschap. Enkele technische noties Na de handschriftelijke kaarten kwamen met de boekdrukkunst, ook de gedrukte kaarten. De eerste kaarten waren houtsneden. Xylografie is hoogdruk en de blokken kunnen dus samen met teksten gedrukt worden. De woorden binnen de kaarten worden samen met de grenzen in het blok gesneden. Een variant: losse letters worden in het houtblok, binnen de kaart ingepast en vastgezet (Münster’s Geographia 1540 CB 2001/1961). Een voorbeeld van een houtsnede is CB 2007/185. Geëtste kaarten ontstonden in het begin van de 15de eeuw in Italië. Etsen zijn diepdruk en moeten op speciale persen gedrukt worden. Een etsplaat laat fijner werk toe en kan voor latere edities bijgewerkt worden. Lithografie of steendruk werd in 1796 door Alois Senefelder uitgevonden. Gedrukte kaarten werden met de hand gekleurd. Inkleurder of afzetter, was een beroep. -

ABSTRACT The present work deals with the research of the concept of woman in English literature at the beginning of the XXI century on the basis of the works by Azerbaijan and English writers (Aynar Rzayev and dan Brown) which played an enormous role in social, moral and literary life of Great Britain and Azerbaijan. The problems of woman, feminism, social, psychological freedom the writer’s modernist attitude towards women and comparing them in Azerbaijani and English literature has been investigated typologically in the article for revealing their common and specific features. The problem of positive woman and her social life, psychological freedom, feminist action and their larger number of the plays in order to observe the evolution of a positive hero in the dramas of these writers are being discussed in chronological order in this article.
