Therefore, even from early Apostolic times, the Catholic Church has held the holy Order of the Diaconate in high honor. "Insofar as competent authority assigns them, it pertains to the deacon: to administer Baptism solemnly; to protect and distribute the Eucharist, assist at and bless marriages in the name of the Church, bring Viaticum to the dying; read the Sacred Scriptures to the faithful, instruct and exhort the people; preside over the prayer and worship of the faithful, administer sacramentals, and officiate at funeral and burial rites. Pius Ix and the Change in Papal Authority in the Nineteenth Century
ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century. chapter 7 Romanus and Catholicus: Counter-Reformation Rome as Caput Mundi Simon Ditchfield Rome is not just a place to visit but an idea to “think with.” When Rome became headquarters of the first world religion with followers on all four continents then known to Europeans—Europe, Asia, Africa, and America—the Eternal City had been Christian for more than a millennium. In his famous sermon delivered on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul (29 June), Pope Leo I (r.440–61) un- equivocally promoted the connection between Christian Rome and the “heav- enly Kingdom” of a celestial Jerusalem: For these are the men, through whom the light of Christ’s gospel shone on you, O Rome, and through whom you, who was the teacher of error, were made the disciple of Truth. These are your holy Fathers and true shepherds, who gave you claims to be numbered among the heavenly kingdoms, and built you under much better and happier auspices than they, by whose zeal the first foundations of your walls were laid: and of whom the one that gave you your name [Romulus] defiled you with his brother’s blood. These are they who promoted you to such glory, that being made a holy nation, a chosen people, a priestly and royal state [1 Peter 2:9], and the head of the world [caput mundi] through blessed Peter’s Holy See you attained a wider sway by the worship of God than by earthly government.1 In the early modern era, this very claim that Rome be considered caput mundi through the authority of St. -

(Pope Pius IX and Pope Leo XIII) András Jancsó Danube Institute – March 2021 Introduction On January 16, 2021, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), held its leadership election which was won by Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet. Prior to the election, the website of the German Catholic Church showcased its CDU leadership candidates with the title “Three Catholic Races”, but highlighting at the same time that Laschet was probably the “most Catholic” out of all the candidates. According to the article, Laschet is connected to the Catholic Church in all areas of life, be it education, student union, editing an diocesan newspaper, or administering a Catholic publishing house. It is noted that, as Minister- President, he refrained from direct state interference as regards religious freedom during the pandemic, and was even received by Pope Francis during a private audience (Scholz, 2021). Nonetheless, following the election, the Catholic daily newspaper Die Tagespost reported that there was some disappointment in the CDU’s Saxon and Thuringian Catholic working groups noting that Friedrich Mertz was not the one to be elected as leader of the CDU. Dissatisfaction is clearly due to political and non-religious differences. Both Mathias Kretschmer, a Saxon, and Claudia Heber, chairperson of the Thuringian Catholic working group, highlighted Mertz’s economic competence. However, after the election, Kretschmer expressed concern about whether Catholics are still supporters of CDU at all. He once again stressed the need to clarify the meaning of the letter “C” in CDU when addressing issues like family policy, protection of life, and creation protection (Die Tagespost, 2021). -
Dominican Confraternities
DOMINICAN CONFRATERNITIES One of the brightest pages of Dominican history is that which records the assignment of the first sixteen Friar Preachers by St. Dominic to different parts of the then civilized world. It is to that date that we can go back and find the beginning of many phases of present Dominican life. It is to that date that we may trace the beginning of activities among the faithful by Do- minicans. These sixteen Brothers went forth to preach; to teach the people the way to salvation. They told the faithful about Jesus; that He was the Treasure of the faithful, the Lord of all. They pointed out the value of His friendship; the best means of attain- ing it and keeping it. The means suggested by them are even today in use—devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and all honor to Mary Immaculate. As years went by, the sons of Saint Dominic formed societies for the greater spread of devotion to Jesus and His Mother. The purpose of such societies was to unite those who, working to- gether, could be of mutual aid in attaining eternal salvation. In all, the Dominicans have instituted and propagated five such con- fraternities: The Confraternities of the Blessed Sacrament and of the Holy Name; the Rosary Confraternity; the Confraternity of the Angelic Warfare and the Confraternity of First Communi- cants and Perseverance, or Blessed Imelda Confraternity. The aim of all is the same—the salvation of souls. The means used by each is different. Let the following explain the five Dominican Confraternities; their origin, propagation and fulfillment of their missions. -

The Confraternity of the Holy Rosary and the Living Rosary the "Living
The Confraternity of the Holy Rosary and the Living Rosary The "Living Rosary" or "Association of the Living Rosary" was begun in 1826 by Pauline Marie Jaricot. After Pauline's death, administration of the Living Rosary passed to the Dominican Order of Preachers, who already (and have since) managed the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary. While it is independent of the confraternity it is also under the administration of the Dominican Order and its goals coincide. It consists in a number of circles of fifteen members who each agree to recite a single decade every day and who thus complete the whole Rosary between them. In the year 1877, the pope Pius IX subjected all Associations of the Living Rosary to the general of the Dominican Order. However, recently the care of the association has given to the local Bishops. The Confraternity of the Holy Rosary is a Roman Catholic Archconfraternity or spiritual association, under the care and guidance of the Dominican Order. The members of the confraternity strive to pray the entire Holy Rosary weekly. Throughout the world, the Archconfraternity is administered by the different Provinces of the Dominican order. In the United States, the Eastern Dominican Province (Province of St. Joseph) has its Confraternity based in Columbus, Ohio. The Rosary Confraternity of the Western Dominican Province (Province of the Holy Name of Jesus) is based in Portland, Oregon at their Rosary Center. The Rosary Confraternity is probably the largest organization of this type within the Catholic Church.
