William Stanley Merwin - Poems Classic Poetry Series William Stanley Merwin - poems - Publication Date: 2004 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive William Stanley Merwin(September 30, 1927) William Stanley Merwin (born 30 September 1927 ) is an American poet. He made a name for himself as an anti-war poet during the 1960s. Later, he would evolve toward mythological themes and develop a unique prosody characterized by indirect narration and the absence of punctuation. In the 80s and 90s, Merwin's interest in Buddhist philosophy and deep ecology also influenced his writing. He continues to write prolifically, though he also dedicates significant time to the restoration of rainforests in Hawaii, where he currently resides. Merwin has received many honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (in both 1971 and 2009) and the Tanning Prize, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Academy of American Poets, as well as the Golden Wreath of the Struga Poetry Evenings. In 1952 Merwin's first book of poetry, A Mask for Janus, was published in the Yale Younger Poets Series. W. H. Auden selected the work for that distinction. Later, in 1971 Auden and Merwin would exchange harsh words in the pages of The New York Review of Books. Merwin had published "On Being Awarded the Pulitzer Prize" in the June 3, 1971 issue of The New York Review of Books outlining his objections to the Vietnam War and stating that he was donating his prize money to the draft resistance movement. Auden responded in his letter "Saying No" published in the July 1, 1971 issue stating that the Pulitzer Prize jury was not a political body with any ties to the American foreign policy. From 1956 to 1957 Merwin was also playwright-in-residence at the Poet's Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts; he became poetry editor at The Nation in 1962. Besides being a prolific poet (he has published over fifteen volumes of his works) he is also a respected translator of Spanish, French, Italian and Latin poetry, including Dante's Purgatorio. Merwin is probably best known for his poetry about the Vietnam War, and can be included among the canon of Vietnam War-era poets which includes such luminaries as Robert Bly, Adrienne Rich, Denise Levertov, Robert Lowell, Allen Ginsberg and Yusef Komunyakaa. In 1998, Merwin wrote Folding Cliffs: A Narrative, an ambitious novel-in-verse about Hawaiian history and legend. Merwin's early subjects were frequently tied to mythological or legendary themes, while many of the poems featured animals, which were treated as emblems in the manner of William Blake. A volume called The Drunk in the Furnace (1960) marked a change for Merwin, in that he began to write in a much www.PoemHunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive 1 more autobiographical way. The title-poem is about Orpheus, seen as an old drunk. 'Where he gets his spirits / it's a mystery', Merwin writes; 'But the stuff keeps him musical'. Another powerful poem of this period is 'Odysseus', which reworks the traditional theme in a way that plays off poems by Stevens and Graves on the same topic. In the 1960s Merwin began to experiment boldly with metrical irregularity. His poems became much less tidy and controlled. He played with the forms of indirect narration typical of this period, a self-conscious experimentation explained in an essay called 'On Open Form' (1969). The Lice (1967) and The Carrier of Ladders (1970) remain his most influential volumes. These poems often used legendary subjects (as in 'The Hydra' or 'The Judgment of Paris') to explore highly personal themes. In Merwin's later volumes, such as The Compass Flower (1977), Opening the Hand (1983), and The Rain in the Trees (1988), one sees him transforming earlier themes in fresh ways, developing an almost Zen-like indirection. His latest poems are densely imagistic, dream-like, and full of praise for the natural world. He has lived in Hawaii since the 1970s, and one sees the influence of this tropical landscape everywhere in the recent poems, though the landscape remains emblematic and personal. Migration (Copper Canyon Press, 2005) won the 2005 National Book Award for poetry. A life-long friend of James Wright, Merwin's elegy to him appears in the 2008 volume From the Other World: Poems in Memory of James Wright. A person like me, who is not but who finds in Christianity the deepest and widest metaphor for life, might be described as a yearner.”2 It would be foolish to assert that Warren was a committed Christian and unequivocal believer and thereby deny the considerable evidence that he was not, but a kind of tempered faith does exist in some of Warren’s poems from Now and Then: Poems 1976-1978.

Marianne Moore was an early mentor and Robert Lowell raved about her first book of poems and became a close friend, yet her poems are not confessional. Some people say she reminds them of Wallace Stevens, others of Robert Frost. How would you characterize Elizabeth Bishop’s achievement and why is she so difficult to place? Maybe what makes her hard to place is exactly what makes her different from anyone else. The more we learn about her the more we realize that her biography has a lot more to do with both the kind of poet she was and with the subject of her poems than first meets the eye. Here was someone who grew up essentially an orphan. Her father died when she was only a few months old. Her mother had a series of nervous breakdowns , was not able to take care of her , and was institutionalized when Bishop was four. Elizabeth never saw her again even though her mother lived for 18 more years. She was brought up by her grandparents and her aunts and farmed out to private schools.

Nelson In partial fulfillment for the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In English TUFTS UNIVERSITY May 2016 ADVISER: VIRGINIA JACKSON Abstract This dissertation argues for a new history of mid-twentieth-century American poetry shaped by the emergence of the figure of the poetic speaker as a default mode of reading. Now a central fiction of lyric reading, the figure of the poetic speaker developed gradually and unevenly over the course of the twentieth century. While the field of historical poetics draws attention to alternative, non-lyric modes of address, this dissertation examines how three poets writing in this period adapted the normative fiction of the poetic speaker in order to explore new modes of address. By choosing three mid-century poets who are rarely studied beside one another, this dissertation resists the aesthetic factionalism that structures most historical models of this period. My first chapter, “Robert Lowell’s Crisis of Reading: The Confessional Subject as the Culmination of the Romantic Tradition of Poetry,” examines the origins of M.L. Rosenthal’s phrase “confessional poetry” and analyzes how that the autobiographical effect of Robert Lowell’s poetry emerges from a strange, collage-like construction of multiple texts and non- autobiographical subjects. My second chapter reads Frank O’Hara’s poetry as a form of intentionally averted communication that treats the act of writing as a surrogate for the poet’s true object of desire.

    ENG 351 Lecture 34 1 Well, we’ll do the blue collar poets today. We don’t really try to group these people thematically, but it seems to happen this way a little bit. James Wright and Philip Levine, both from working class backgrounds. Wright was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio. And, if you noted, that is right across the river from Wheeling, West Virginia. And that is where the steel mills are and that’s where the glass factory was where his father worked for 50 years, which had a great influence on him. He was educated, however. He got out of that part of the world. Went to Kenyon and studied under John Crowe Ransom. Got a Fullbright to Austria and wound up at Washington, the University of Washington, where he studied under Theodore Roethke, Ted Roethke, and became a friend, as they say, of Richard Hugo who was also one of Roethke’s students. He went on to write a Ph.D. — to take a Ph.D., writing his dissertation on Charles Dickens, which I think is amazing, in 1959. He taught for a time at Minnesota, the University of Minnesota, where John Berryman also taught and later at Hunter College in New York at the end of his career. From John Crowe Random and Ted Roethke he learned poetic form. He is more often — his early poetry in particular is fairly formal poetry. In the ‘60s he began to branch out and write a looser form of poetry which is what we have here. It tickles me when editors say something that just seems so bizarre.

    HenryHart RobertLowell and the ReligiousSublime A J^JLs a student in his last year at St. Mark's, Robert Lowell published an interpre- tation of an allegorical drawing by his friend, Francis Parker, which reveals an early enchantment with religious sublimity. Although the piece in Vindex is characterized more by youthful idealism than hermeneutic skill, it is prophetic of the sort of poetry he would soon be writing. Lowell's explication begins with a grand moral pronounce- ment intended to separate the saints from the fools: 'The idea that we wish to make clear is that tremendous labor and great intelligence, if applied toward the advance- ment of evil or petty ends, are of no avail." He then proceeds to excoriate fourteen types of misguided intellectuals who surround the central figure of "St. Simon, the Stylite, a symbol of true knowledge." The fools are generally pedants and scientists, "men of authority who misuse their power" (129), and no doubt modelled with in- subordinate glee after Lowell's teachers. The young Lowell, full of sanctimonious ambitions, has his eye on the sublime "St. Simon [who] is elevated high above everyone else by comprehension of the true light. The book and the pen symbolize real intellectual attainment, while the plumb line signifies a quite natural feeling of superiority; but more important, his insecurity. From the sublime to the ridiculous is but a step." The sublime from Longinus and Burke to Kant and Harold Bloom has always been a measure of power and has always involved ranking that power according to a hierarchy of values.

In those volumes, Lowell returns to recollect his private past; his act of remembering becomes the poetic process by which Lowell is able to create the retrospective truth of his life.

    RichardTUlinghast Robert Lowell'sDay byDay: "Untilthe wristwatchis takenfrom the wrist" T JLo read Robert Lowell's last book, Day byDay, published shortly before his death in 1977, is to accompany the poet on a valedictory retrospective of his life and work. This is the most elegiac book of one of our great elegists. In poem after poem he says - goodbye not only to old friends but to old ideas the ruling ideas of the time in which he lived. He continues to feel ambivalent about the third of his troublesome marriages, wondering whether he had made a mistake in leaving his second wife, Elizabeth Hardwick, to marry the Anglo-Irish novelist Lady Caroline Blackwood. - Ambivalence was Lowell's characteristicstance a stance that positioned him ideally to exemplify many of the conflicts of his period. When he died in a taxicab on the way to Hardwick's apartment in Manhattan after a flight from London, he was car- rying, wrapped in brown paper, the famous portrait of Caroline Blackwood, Girl in Bed, which had been painted by her first husband, Lucian Freud. In an interview in the September, 1993, issue of Town and Country, Blackwood reveals that attendants at the hospital had to break Lowell's arms to remove the picture from his grasp. Day by Day has the overall effect of an almost posthumous work: On the last page of Ian Hamilton's biography of Lowell, William Empson's words on King Lear are invoked: The scapegoatwho has collectedall this wisdom for us is viewed at the end with a sort of hushedenvy, not I think reallybecause he has become wise but becausethe generalhuman desirefor experiencehas been so glutted in him; he has been througheverything.
