CIVILCLIM is funded by the Research Council of Norway, with contributions from the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning. The project has a total time frame of four years and is coordinated by Western Norway Research Institute. A key aspect of the project is international co-operation and cross-national comparisons. The project’s partners are the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), Centre for Clean Technology and Environmental Policy (CSTM) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, and the University of Hull in the United Kingdom. Several people deserve mentioning for their assistance in compiling information material for this report. Studien rapporteres her i form av en grunnleggende oversikt over kjente forekomster av, og potensialer for, mineralressurser av metaller, industrimineraler, naturstein, grus og pukk i fylket. Rapporten gir i tillegg en oversikt over hva som per i dag finnes av geologiske, geofysiske og geokjemiske data som er viktige for å vurdere mulighetene for funn av nye mineralforekomster. Dagens kunnskapsnivå har mangler som bør prioriteres. Rapporten gjennomgår derfor de ulike kunnskapsbehovene knyttet til de forskjellige forekomsttyper og gir forslag til prioritering av videre undersøkelser. Nedstrøms foredling representerer en svært vesentlig del av verdiskapingen basert på mineralske ressurser. Temaet er i første rekke relevant for forekomster i drift og for kjente mineralressurser med attraktive kvaliteter, men som av ulike grunner ikke er i drift. Vestland fylke har enkelte ressurstyper med åpenbare muligheter for nedstrøms næringsutvikling i stort omfang, mens andre har mer generelle samfunnsøkonomiske synergieffekter.

    SUNNIVALEIA FROM BERGEN TO SELJE Gulatinget and the Millstone-quarries in Hyllestad are two more central Selja Kloster historic sites on the western coast of Norway. The activities here took place in an age of conflict resulting in great changes to society: the trans- SUNNIVALEIA ition from the time of the vikings to the Middle Ages. Gulatinget, the Millstone-quarries, the Selja Monastery and the Kinn Church, have all played an important role in allowing Christianity to gain a foothold in this – a pilgrimage over land and water country. on the west coast of Norway THE GULATING was a legal assembly held annually in Gulen between AD 900 and 1300. Here chieftains, men of distinction and free men owning farmland met BERGEN ∙ KINN ∙ SELJE to discuss problems and attempt to solve them – often by passing rele- vant laws. Gulatinget,was one of the oldest and largest medieval assem- blies in the Nordic region, and Eivindvik seems to have been the site of the assemby. Two large crosses of stone produced in Hyllestad around AD 1000 are still found here. www.gulatinget.no THE MILLSTONEPARK IN HYLLESTAD For more than 1200 years millstones for hand- and watermills have been produced from several quarries in Hyllestad. This large-scale industry started in the beginning of the Viking Ages and continued through the Medieval Ages and up till our time. This commodity was exported to all areas in Norway and to Iceland, Sweden and Denmark as well. Most of the historic stone-crosses along the coast of Norway were made here. The crosses in Korssund, Vilnes and Kinn originate from these quarries.

WGR marks the outcrop of a composite terrane consisting of variably re-worked Proterozoic basement and parautochthonous or autochthonous cover units. The WGR exhibits a gross structural, petrographic and thermobarometric zonation from southeast to northwest, reflecting an increasing intensity of ScandianŽ. late Palaeozoic metamorphic and structural imprint. Scandian-aged eclogites have been widelyŽ. though for kinetic reasons not invariably stabilised in metabasic rocks but have suffered varying degrees of retrogression during exhumation. In the region between the Jostedal mountains and Nordfjord, eclogites commonly have distinctively prograde-zoned garnets with amphibolite or epidote±amphibolite facies solid inclusion suites and lack any evidence for stability of coesiteŽ high pressurewx HP eclogites. In the south of this area, in Sunnfjord, eclogites locally contain glaucophane as an inclusion or matrix phase. North of Nordfjord, eclogites mostly lack prograde zoning and evidence for coesite, either as relics or replacive polycrystalline quartz, is present in both eclogitesŽ ultrahigh pressurewx UHP eclogites. and, rarely, gneisses. Coesite or polycrystalline quartz after coesite has now been found in eight new localities, including one close to a microdiamond-bearing gneiss.
