DISSERTAZIONE FINALE Minimalismo, modalità e improvvisazione nella musica dei nuovi King Crimson Relatore: Candidato: Ernesto Napolitano Jacopo Conti matr. n° 259083 Anno accademico 2006 - 2007 A mia zia, che credeva in me e mi ha sempre sostenuto. 1 PREMESSA “King Crimson was more a revolving door than a band. ” - Robert Palmer La cronologia dei King Crimson (KC) dal 1969 al 2003 è assai articolata, e include vari stili e molti musicisti con una sola presenza fissa, quella di Robert Fripp (1946), chitarrista e compositore inglese fondatore del gruppo. Considerati tra i fondatori del progressive rock, pubblicano l’album In The Court Of The Crimson King 1 nel 1969 con Fripp alla chitarra, Ian McDonald (1946) al sax e al mellotron, Michael Giles (1942) alla batteria, Greg Lake (1948) al basso e alla voce e Peter Sinfield (1943) nel ruolo di paroliere. I lunghi brani strutturati, gli elaborati riff suonati all’unisono e i testi di ispirazione fantastica e fiabesca non solo diventano la caratteristica principale del gruppo, ma anche gli elementi fondanti del nuovo genere. Già con il secondo lp, In The Wake Of Poseidon (1970), la formazione viene rimodellata: Mel Collins (1947) prende il posto di McDonald al sax, Gordon Haskell canta in alcuni brani (durante la lavorazione del disco Greg Lake abbandona il gruppo per andare a costituire il trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer), si aggiunge al pianoforte Keith Tippett (1947). Toivo Burlin: The creation (and re-creation) of virtual spatiality: Surround sound mixing in King Crimson’s back catalog box sets Abstract: The article analyzes surround mixing of King Crimson’s analog recordings. “Lizard,” “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (Part 1),” “The Night Watch,” “Trio,” and “One Time” are analyzed using the theoretical perspec- tives of the music recording as representation and spatial design. There is a difference between live and studio recordings in surround: live recordings tend to be mixed according to the direct/ambient principle, while studio re- cordings are mixed according to the principle of direct-sound all around. Live recordings in surround can also often be understood as examples of documentarism, and studio recordings as examples of hyper realism. The spatial design of the surround mix tends to emphasize aspects of spatiality in the broad sense: where the recording can, for example, be interpreted as a landscape in sound. Prostitute had proved itself a small critical hit which gave me a lot of freedom as a solo artist and producer to call the shots on a larger album using a full band. It was recorded at the same time as I was writing and performing for the band that I had with my husband Robert Fripp, Sunday All Over The World. Creatively I felt I had escaped the tag of being an Eighties pop star and was dawning on a new future as a true musician/songwriter. At the same time I was appearing in the Christmas show Whale at the National Theatre, so life felt good and on track.

    FIRST FULL ALBUM RELEASE IN 25 YEARS FROM A PROGRESSIVE ROCK PIONEER EDDIE JOBSON - biography The Editor-in-Chief of Emmy magazine wrote: “The word ‘genius’ is bandied about a bit too freely these days, but in Jobson’s case, the term not only applies, it’s been used to describe him since his northern England childhood, when he was such a violin and piano prodigy that he wrote his first string quartet at 13 [and] performed with his first professional symphony at 14...” His performances and compositions have received press accolades, having been described as “brilliant” [All Music Guide], “intriguingly original” [Los Angeles Times], even “magnificent” [London Times], “staggering” [All About Jazz], and “dazzling” [The Boston Globe]. Jobson started playing acoustic guitar and classical piano at age 7 and violin at age 8, turning professional at only 15. By age 17, he had already acquired a record deal with Warner Bros. and an international reputation as one of the early pioneers of the electric violin with his first recording band Curved Air (the band that also launched the career of Police drummer Stewart Copeland). In the same year he was invited by Roxy Music front-man Bryan Ferry to be the keyboardist and orchestrator on Ferry’s first solo album—a project that would garner the teen star the first of his nine gold albums. At age 18, Jobson became a full-blown member of Roxy Music, replacing synthesist Brian Eno and helping the band create their first No.1 album—a point that would mark the beginning of ‘Roxymania’ in Britain and the start of their most critically acclaimed and influential period.

    Trey Gunn – The Waters, They Are Rising (55:38, CD, 7D Media, 2015) Liest man den Namen Trey Gunn, denkt man vermutlich zunächst an King Crimson und erwartet womöglich eine Art von Musik, die sehr von diesem Prog-Dino beeinflusst ist und sich vielleicht Richtung „Thrak“ oder Ähnlichem bewegt. Hat man sich mit dem bisherigen Schaffen Gunns beschäftigt, wird die Erwartungshaltung dann aber gleich eine andere sein. Gunn hat bereits eine zweistellige Zahl an Solo-Veröffentlichungen vorzuweisen, das aktuelle Werk eröffnet eine vierteilige Serie. Das mehrteilige Stück „Flow“ (s.u.) liefert das Thema zur ersten Folge, die nächste wird „Gravity“ heißen. Geboten wird keine Rock Musik, sondern eine knappe Stunde ruhige Ambient-Klänge. Den Begriff Tempo wird man hier wohl an kaum einer Stelle assoziieren. Ganz im Gegenteil, Gunn geht hier sehr behutsam und langsam zu Werke. Fast alles wird von ihm an seiner Touch Guitar erzeugt, was meist warme, bisweilen aber auch mal recht abstrakte Klänge bedeutet. Den Auftakt macht der einzige gesungene Titel, eine Cover- Version eines Bob Dylan-Titels namens ‚Not Dark Yet‘. Gastsängerin Dylan Nichole Bandy macht ihre Sache hier dermaßen gut, dass man sich nach Ablauf der CD fragt, warum es nicht mehr Titel dieser Form gegeben hat. Ganz tolle Nummer! Der Rest besteht aus Filmmusiken und Live-Mitschnitten. Bei Letzteren handelt es sich um insgesamt vier Titeln, nämlich ‘Flood I‘ bis ‘Flood IV‘, die sich allesamt lose aufPeter Gabriels Song ‘Here Comes The Flood‘ beziehen, was sich so ohne Weiteres allerdings kaum raushören lässt. Einige längere, sehr abstrakte Passagen bergen die Gefahr, langweilig zu geraten – das liegt dann natürlich im Ohr des Betrachters.
