Presents PITTBULL Armando Christian Pérez (born January 15, 1981 in Miami, Florida), better known by the stage name Pitbull, is a Cuban-American rapper signed to his own label, Mr 305 Inc. His first recorded performance was on Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz album Kings of Crunk in 2002, after which he released his debut album, M.I.A.M.I., in 2004. He has since released 2006’s El Mariel, 2007’s The Boatlift and 2009’s Rebelution, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200. Pitbull’s breakout hit was the Lil Jon collabo “Culo” produced by Lil Jon & The Diaz Brothers. In addition, Pitbull has also released several mixtapes, the most recent being Unleashed Volume 6, which are mostly composed of freestyles and remixes of popular rap music. Both thematically and musically, the 25-year-old is seen as a modern-day equivalent of earlier Miami rappers such as the 2 Live Crew and Afro- Rican. It was in fact former 2 Live Crew leader Luther Campbell who gave the up and coming rapper his first chance to shine. Apart from Crunk, his album shows clear influences from both Miami bass and freestyle. In addition to his musical work, Pitbull has also been featured in The Source expressing his stance on Dictator Fidel Castro and he was also part of their Unsigned Hype Section. He contributed to an essay published in the New York Post that criticized Che Guevara’s iconization in clothing and other areas. In video games, Pitbull’s hit single “Dammit Man” produced by Jim Jonsin is featured in Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, and he also plays himself in the upcoming video game based on the 1980’s Scarface. -

The legislation was proposed in response to the influx of aliens to South Florida because of the Mariel boatlift in 1980. Testimony and material for the record was presented by local groups and organizations, Federal, State, and county representatives, and representatives of organizations concerned with citizen and non-citizen rights. The thrust of the testimony concerns the difficulties of dealing with a large alien influx and the need for federal assistance. Specific topics include the impact of immigration on Dade County schools, the costs of the Cuban flotilla, and an analysis of the asylum and refugee provisions of the proposed immigration reform and control act of 1982 by the Lawyers Committee for International Human Rights. -

“I HOPE THEY DON’T COME TO PLAINS”: RACE AND THE DETENTION OF MARIEL CUBANS, 1980-1981 by ALEXANDER MAXWELL STEPHENS (Under the Direction of Bethany E. Moreton) ABSTRACT In 1980, roughly 125,000 Cubans sailed to the United States in a mass migration that became known as the Mariel boatlift. Labeled "scum" by Fidel Castro, many of the Cubans who crossed the Straits of Florida found themselves stigmatized again in the United States, as rumors spread that their government used the boatlift to empty its prisons and mental institutions. Criminalized and caught in the middle of a changing U.S. refugee policy, tens of thousands of Mariel migrants were sent to makeshift detention centers on military bases. Black and mulato Cubans made up a disproportionate number of the people confined to these carceral spaces. Although scholars have been critical of the stigmatization and detention of people from Mariel, few have explored fully the ways that race shaped this process. This thesis analyzes the various forms of power that contributed to the racialized consequences of the boatlift. Muller Over the past century of recorded evidence, Cuban popular music has undergone great stylistic changes, especially regarding the piano tumbao. Hybridity in the Cuban/Latin context has taken place on different levels to varying extents involving instruments, genres, melody, harmony, rhythm, and musical structures. This hybridity has involved melding, fusing, borrowing, repurposing, adopting, adapting, and substituting. But quantifying and pinpointing these processes has been difficult because eachariable v or parameter embodies a history and a walking archive of sonic aesthetics. In an attempt to classify and quantify precise parameters involved in hybridity, this dissertation presents a paradigmatic model, organizing music into vocabularies, repertories, and abstract procedures. Cuba's pianistic vocabularies are used very interactively, depending on genre, composite ensemble texture, vocal timbre, performing venue, and personal taste.
