On Friday evening, we’ll sponsor the premiere of the PBS documentary Cuba: The Forgotten Organized by the Cuban Research Institute (CRI) of Florida International University (FIU) Revolution, directed by Glenn Gebhard. Presents PITTBULL Armando Christian Pérez (born January 15, 1981 in Miami, Florida), better known by the stage name Pitbull, is a Cuban-American rapper signed to his own label, Mr 305 Inc. His first recorded performance was on Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz album Kings of Crunk in 2002, after which he released his debut album, M.I.A.M.I., in 2004. He has since released 2006’s El Mariel, 2007’s The Boatlift and 2009’s Rebelution, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200. Pitbull’s breakout hit was the Lil Jon collabo “Culo” produced by Lil Jon & The Diaz Brothers. In addition, Pitbull has also released several mixtapes, the most recent being Unleashed Volume 6, which are mostly composed of freestyles and remixes of popular rap music. Both thematically and musically, the 25-year-old is seen as a modern-day equivalent of earlier Miami rappers such as the 2 Live Crew and Afro- Rican. It was in fact former 2 Live Crew leader Luther Campbell who gave the up and coming rapper his first chance to shine. Apart from Crunk, his album shows clear influences from both Miami bass and freestyle. In addition to his musical work, Pitbull has also been featured in The Source expressing his stance on Dictator Fidel Castro and he was also part of their Unsigned Hype Section. He contributed to an essay published in the New York Post that criticized Che Guevara’s iconization in clothing and other areas. In video games, Pitbull’s hit single “Dammit Man” produced by Jim Jonsin is featured in Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, and he also plays himself in the upcoming video game based on the 1980’s Scarface. -

Smita Ghosh From Camp Krome to the CCA: The Long-Term Effects of the Haitian Program On February 10, 1977, a group of forty-three Haitian asylum seekers wrote a letter from the El Paso immigration detention center.1 The migrants had been detained while fleeing the oppressive regime of Jean Claude (“Baby Doc”) Duvalier. One, named Thelimaque, told his story as an example. He explained that his father once headed a political organization in Haiti that opposed then-president Francois (“Papa Doc”) Duvalier. The Tonton Macoute, a paramilitary force created during the first Duvalier regime, raided one of the organization’s meetings and shot many of its members, forcing Thelimaque and his father into hiding outside of Port-au-Prince. Eventually, when the Tonton Macoute killed his father and kept looking for him, Thelimaque escaped to the United States on his friend’s boat.2 Thelimaque and his compatriots were immediately sent to immigration detention. “When [our boat] got close to the land in Florida,” they wrote “we … stop the boat and call the police because we knew that we was illegal. The Immigration [Service] came and take us to the federal building in Florida, asked us some questions and put us in jail.”3 The letter writers were then transferred to a federal facility in El Paso. When they wrote the letter, they had been detained for fifteen months. In the early 1980s, the government was presented with a rapid and unexpected increase in immigration from Haiti.4 Between 1972 and 1980, 32,367 Haitians arrived in the United States, many in makeshift boats like Thelimaque’s.5 The great majority of these “boat people” arrived 1 Letter from “The Haitian Prisoners in El Paso Camp,” Feb. -

TRANSNATIONAL LANDSCAPES AND THE CUBAN DIASPORA by JENNA ELIZABETH ANDREWS-SWANN (Under the Direction of Virginia D. Nazarea) ABSTRACT This study explores the multiple meanings of landscape and the creation of place within the Cuban Diaspora. Landscape encompasses not only the external physical environment or a particular geographical space, but the concept also represents collections of personal experiences with, and memories linked to, various pieces of the physical environment. Diaspora is an association that is not restricted to a geographical place but formed by cultural nationalism shared by members of a transnational community. The research sites in this study are Moultrie, Georgia, and Miami, Florida. These sites were selected to represent some of the diversity (e.g. rural/urban, established/newly arrived) inherent in the Cuban Diaspora. In light of current scholarship on these themes and the issues facing members of the Cuban Diaspora today, the principal questions addressed in this study are: How are landscapes (re)created and given meaning at locations in the Cuban Diaspora? and How does the context of migration or exile affect the (re)creation of landscapes? To address the research questions, an integrated set of mixed ethnographic methods comprised of participant observation, interviews, life history collection, cognitive mapping, and archival research was used. Results show that the manner in which members of the Cuban Diaspora in the United States left Cuba indeed impacts their relationship with the island and how they experience Cubanidad , or Cubanness. Based on the data collected, many members of the Diaspora who were jailed or otherwise persecuted in Cuba tend to shy away from addressing volatile issues, such as Cuban politics or religion, and choose instead to (re)create a private sense of Cubanidad. -

Cuban Remittances Can Best Be Understood As Part of US Immigration Policy Toward Cuba in the Context of the Cold War
Working Paper # 15 Remittances To Cuba: An Evaluation of Cuban and US Government Policy Measures Lorena Barberia September 2002 Abstract Since the commencement of hostilities between Cuba and the US in the early 1960s, both governments have repeatedly attempted to influence private family money transfers across borders. This study undertakes a retrospective assessment of Cuban and US government policy on remittances from 1959 to the present. Tracing policy shifts and targeted outcomes, the paper argues that (1) the aggregate flow of remittances and their uses are highly sensitive to macroeconomic, political, and institutional factors in Cuba, the receiving country, and are less sensitive to the policies imposed by the sending country, the United States; (2) Cuban government policy has been successful in attracting remittances and partially successful in channeling these flows toward the State-controlled economy; and (3) Cuban government policies are encouraging the use of these flows for consumption and less so for savings and direct investment. ii Table of Contents I.
