"…your constant excellence and high quality of performance…" Sonny Anderson, Director of Talent Booking, Disneyland and Walt Disney World. BIOGRAPHY The year was 1965. The air was clean, music refreshingly innocent, and in Cupertino California, a small, pre-Silicon Valley town just south of San Francisco near Santa Cruz, 4 high school buddies got together to form a garage band. This was not just any garage band - this band was special. They would succeed where others would fail - they would continue where others would die off. They had a focus where other bands just rambled. They wore suits! (and this was the 60’s). They believed that "good enough" never was. PAPA DOO RUN RUN (their name derived from the background line of Jan & Dean's New Girl in School), established a solid performance schedule, playing as many as 200 1965 dates a year, worldwide. After meeting limited success with a few recording ventures in the 60's and early 70's, PAPA DOO RUN RUN caught the big wave with Be True To Your School (1975, RCA), produced by their friend Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys. That single cracked the Billboard Top 40 chart, and hit No. 1 in California, earning them "KAHUNA" status among the veteran surf legends of the day. The flip side was a song called Disney Girls, which opened the door for what was to become an unprecedented 15 year run at 1975 Disneyland, as the "celebrity house band" (1975-90). Be True... was followed by a string of singles and EP's, all of which received a respectable amount of airplay. PAPA DOO RUN RUN's most significant recording accolade is a GOLD RECORD award and a GRAMMY nomination for their California Project CD (1985, Telarc Records). Since that time, PAPA has released 6 other CDs, including their critically acclaimed, all original album Santa Cruz (2001, Blue Pacific Records). In the early 70’s PAPA met Jan & Dean (who had stopped 1981 performing in 1966 because of Jan’s debilitating car accident) and convinced the duo to get back together. After a series of very successful “trial concerts”, came 5 years of nationwide tours, a CBS-TV movie (Deadman’s Curve ) and soundtrack album. In the early 80s PAPA left Jan & Dean and, for the next 2 decades, toured and recorded with members 1988 of the Beach Boys. PAPA DOO RUN RUN has also appeared in concert with such luminaries as Roy Orbison, Fleetwood Mac, Kenny Loggins, Chicago, Jimmy Buffett, and a zillion other huge names. Their most notable performances include two Olympics, eight Super Bowls, and two Inaugurations. In 1988, PAPA was dubbed "CALIFORNIA'S BAND" by California's Governor Dukmejian. PAPA DOO RUN RUN’s lineup today includes: Don Zirilli - keyboards and vocals, Jim Rush - bass and vocals, (both of whom are original members since 1965); Adrian Baker - guitar and vocals, who for 20 years was a member of the Beach Boys, and prior to 1998 that was with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; Bobby “G” Gothar - guitar and vocals, who has performed with Merle Haggard, and Charlie Daniels; studio drummer Bo Fox, who throughout the 80’s toured with Jimmy Buffett and the Eagles; and (when he’s not touring with Brian Wilson), Jeffrey Foskett - lead vocalist and guitarist for the Beach Boys from 1980-90. 2007 SONGS SIXTIES-SURF MORE CLASSIC ROCK BARBARA ANN BEACH BOYS DAY TRIPPER BEATLES BE TRUE TO SCHOOL PAPA DOO RUN RUN DEVIL W/BLUE DRESS MITCH RIDER CALIFORNIA GIRLS BEACH BOYS DO WAH DITTY MANFRED MAN DANCE DANCE DANCE BEACH BOYS EVIL WAYS SANTANA DO IT AGAIN BEACH BOYS GET READY RARE EARTH DON'T WORRY BABY BEACH BOYS GET TOGETHER YOUNGBLOODS DO YOU WANNA DANCE BEACH BOYS GIMME SOME LOVIN SPENCER DAVIS FUN FUN FUN BEACH BOYS GOOD LOVIN' RASCALS GOD ONLY KNOWS BEACH BOYS GREEN ONIONS BOOKER T & MGs GOOD VIBRATIONS BEACH BOYS I FEEL FINE BEATLES HELP ME RHONDA BEACH BOYS I FOUGHT THE LAW BOBBY FULLER 4 I GET AROUND BEACH BOYS I SAW HER STANDING BEATLES KOKOMO BEACH BOYS HONKY TONK WOMEN ROLLING STONES LITTLE DEUCE COUPE BEACH BOYS JAILHOUSE ROCK ELVIS PRESLEY LITTLE HONDA HONDELS JOHNNY B. • An American Band by Tibbieb
An American Band By TibbieB Dear Readers, A summers ago, a group of S&H sibs and I met in the Great Smokey Mountains for a few days of watching episodes and sharing our obsession for the boys. While watching “The Specialist” late one night, we noticed Starsky was wearing a t-shirt with something printed on the front. Ever desperate for any minute detail about the private lives of our heroes, we pursued the clue with a fervor equal to Sherlock Holmes tracking down Dr. Moriarty. Thank God for that marvelous invention on the DVD player the zoom! JackieH, always up to a challenge, maneuvered and manipulated the device until the words emblazoned on the t-shirt miraculously flashed on the screen before our eyes: “We’re An American Band.” “I know what that is!” I shouted to the others. “Grand Funk Railroad! That’s one of Grand Funk’s biggest hits!” Who would have taken Starsky for a Grand Funk Railroad fan? He was a rocker a hard rocker, no less! Until that moment, we had had little insight into his taste in music (aside from disco music, Jim Croce, and a little “Black Bean Soup”). We knew Starsky played the guitar, but had been treated to only a smattering of his musical ability in “The Avenger.” Could it be true? Starsky liked hardcore rock-and-roll? We pontificated on this for hours and, on the following day, rushed into town in search of Grand Funk’s CD by the same title. It wasn’t easy, but we finally returned home from a hard day of shopping in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Londonmaid proudly clutching the trophy in her hand.

  • This One Time, at Rock Camp… Rock N’ Roll Fantasy Camp Wants to Make Your Air-Guitar Dreams Come True for Only $6,000 – Groupies Not Included
Playboy Magazine By David Peisner This One Time, At Rock Camp… Rock n’ Roll Fantasy Camp wants to make your air-guitar dreams come true for only $6,000 – groupies not included I have convinced myself that the final night of Rock n’ Roll Fantasy Camp is no big deal, no difference from putting on a skit with my cabin mates when I was nine. But this isn’t the stage at Camp Winnawoka, it’s the Bottom Line, a world-famous club in Manhattan. And this isn’t a marshmallow on a stick in my hand; it’s a bass guitar, on which I am expected shortly to accompany camp counselor Roger Daltrey. Yes, that Roger Daltrey. Probably best not to dwell on the fact that I’d never picked up a bass before three days ago. “Hellooo, New York City!” the emcee howls, raising an expectant cheer from the standing-room only crowd. “Are you ready?” For those about to rock, we beg your forgiveness. Stratocasters and fanny packs Rock n’ Roll Fantasy Camp is the brainchild of concert promoter David Fishof. Decades ago, baseball fantasy camps proved that rich, paunchy sports fans would pay top dollar to play catch with rich, paunchy ex-athletes. Fishof applied the idea to music, creating a place where people could “eat, sleep and live rock and roll.” The first RRFC, held in 1997 in Miami, lost money, but Fishof revived the camp in Los Angeles last year, and now he’s brought it to New York City. While financial riches have so far proved elusive, the rock-camp concept has found its way onto pop culture’s ultimate barometer: The Simpsons.
