Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period. -

In the Republic of Turkey, an early history text provided the definition of being a Turk as "any individual within the Republic of Turkey, whatever his faith who speaks Turkish, grows up with Turkish culture and adopts the Turkish ideal is a Turk." Today the word is primarily used for the inhabitants of Turkey, but may also refer to the members of sizeable Turkish-speaking populations of the former lands of the Ottoman Empire and large Turkish communities which been established in Europe (particularly in Germany, France, and the Netherlands), as well as North America, and Australia. This idea was directly and most cate gorically declared in “letters of conquest” (fetihnames), accounts of victorious campaigns against unbelievers, distributed both domestically and abroad by the sultans. The most relevant examples of this genre are to be found in Meh med II’s statements in letters sent to Muslim rulers.2 Furthermore, both Byzan tine and Ottoman sources indicate that sultans were conscious of their obligation to conduct cihad. For instance, in 1421, after Mehmed I’s death, as Nişancı Mehmed paşa informs us, his son, Gazi Sultan Murad Han, came to the imperial throne. Murad Han did not abandon but rather followed the right way, hoisted the banners of the holy campaign and the holy war (gaza ü-cihad bayraklarını yücelten) and confided in the glorious Allah.3 Step by step, but especially after the conquest of Arab territories, the image of sultans as leaders of holy wars was recognized across the Muslim world.4 In the sixteenth century, stereotypes dominated the image of the sultan as a holy warrior. -

Nure Sufi 1231 yılındaki Baba İlyas isyanında onun yanında yer almıştır. Karamanlılar Nure Sufi’den sonra Kerimüddin Karaman Bey’in önderliğinde Kilikya sınırlarındaki uçlarda Türkmen Dağları diye bilinen dağlık kesimde Varsak, Durgut, Bulgar, Kosun, Göğes gibi diğer Türkmen aşiretleri ile işbirliği yaparak güçlendiler. Karaman Bey özellikle Moğol kumandanı Baycu’nun Anadolu’ya geldiği sırada yaşanan karmaşadan istifade ederek aşireti ile birlikte yol kesmeye ve yağmacılığa başladı. Bu esnada Selçuklu tahtında bulunan IV. Rükneddin Kılıç Arslan, Karaman Bey’e sahip olduğu yerleri ikta olarak vermek suretiyle itaat altına almak istemiş, kardeşi Bonsuz’a da Emir-i Candarlık payesi vermiştir. -

Named gazis, akıncıs, alps, chevaliers and knights, they came from the elite military classes. Literary depictions of these men as holy warriors were fundamentally idealized topoi created by writers who were patronized by or were close to those in power. -

Narrating the “New” History: Museums in the Construction of the Turkish Republic Melania Savino University of London Abstract The disciplines of archaeology and museology underwent a profound reformation after the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. The Kemalist idea was to found a new state with new traditions, a common heritage to share within the Turkish boundaries; and the past became a powerful tool to fulfil this project. Numerous excavations were conducted in Anatolia after the 1930s, and consequently the archaeological museums were intended to play an important role in showing the new archaeological discoveries to the wider public. This paper aims to investigate the connection between museums and national identity in Turkey after the establishment of the Republic. In the first part, I analyze the development of the history of archaeological practice and its political implications before and after the foundation of the Republic. In the second part, I focus my attention on the foundation and development of the Archaeological Museums of Istanbul and Ankara, investigating the connection between the state and the museums through the visual representation of the past. 253 Introduction In 1935, the former director of the Istanbul museums, Halil Edhem Bey (1861–1938), wrote an article in La Turquie Kemaliste, the official propaganda publication of the Kemalist government entitled “The significance and importance of our museums of antiquities among the European institutions” (Edhem 1935: 2–9).
