AFENET has operations in over 31 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, 5 countries in the Caribbean region. AFENET is dedicated to helping Ministries of Health in Africa build strong, effective, sustainable programs and capacity to improve public health systems on the African continent. The network’s goal is to strengthen field epidemiology and public health laboratory capacity to contribute effectively to addressing epidemics and other major public health problems in countries where we operate. AFENET has its headquarters in Kampala, Uganda. AFENET in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) - Angola is working to strengthen laboratory activities for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis, and supporting Angola Ministry of Health in COVID-19 pandemic response. AFENET is seeking to recruit one (01) highly qualified & experienced professional to serve as the Laboratory Technical Coordinator for COVID-19 for Angola. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities: 1. Oversee the implementation of ITF project COVID-19 laboratory activities in Angola 2. Coordinate and guide staff to develop COVID-19 designated activities: a. Implementation of laboratory information system c. Laboratory physical improvement d. Training and oversight of laboratory technicians e. Recruitment of laboratory staff f. Data management g. Implementation of immunoassay for surveillance h. External Quality Assurance of COVID diagnosis 3. Serve as AFENET focal point for COVID-19 communication with INIS/Ministry of Health 4. Compile activities report on the progress of laboratory COVID activities to AFENET Laboratory Project Coordinator and CDC regional office 5. Ensure project targets and visibility of impact on public health 6. Perform any other duty as assigned by supervisor. Required Qualifications Medical Laboratory technologist or laboratory scientist with a Master’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health or Epidemiology Minimum of 5 years of clinical laboratory working experience preferably in molecular biology Experience in epidemiology programs is a plus Good skills for coordination and people management Strong oral and written communication skills in Portuguese and English Have solid knowledge of functioning of laboratory services and systems in Angola Experience working and networking with MOH in Angola and collaborating partners. He performed his first fieldwork in Cameroon in 2003. In 2008 his book How to Win a Football Match in Cameroon was published by the African Studies Centre in Leiden. He spent six weeks in Ghana in 2008 for the African Cup of Nations. In 2009 and 2010 he performed research in Ghana and Cameroon for five and four months, respectively.
