The Rochester Sentinel 1987 Friday, January 2, 1987 Charles W. Cole Charles William COLE, 64, Rt. 1, Roann, died at his home Thursday afternoon. He was born Nov. 20, 1922 in Townsend,Wis., to Alex and Sylvia GREWELL COLE. He spent most of his life in the Roann area. He was a retired TV technician, having worked for Shoemaker TV, Roann. He also was a groundskeeper at Highland Hills Golf Course. A member and past commander of the Roann American Legion, he served on the destroyer, USS McNair, during World War II. Surviving are five sons, Michael [COLE], Wabash; Roger [COLE], Highland; Keith [COLE], Punta Gorda, Fla.; Chris [COLE], Roann, and Charles [COLE] Jr., Nashville, Tenn.; A daughter, Debbie COLE, Munster; four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Alice) KEIM, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Mrs. Fred (Mary) LONG, Rochester; Mrs. William (Rosanna) ROSS, Oakland City, and Mrs. Charles (Sinda) EASTERDAY, Francisco; three brothers, James [COLE], Oakland City; Francis [COLE], Peru, and Jerry [COLE], Marion, and six grandchildren. A brother preceded in death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Home, Roann, with the Rev. Lowell BURRUS officiating. Burial will be in the Roann I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Alice M. Turnipseed Alice Mae TURNIPSEED, 55, Macy, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carmel Care Center, Carmel. She had been ill for several months. She was born Jan. 20, 1931 in Kewanna to George and Geraldine KEENEY ANDERSON. She had lived in Macy 27 years, moving there from Kewanna. On April 17, 1960 in Kewanna she married Dean E. TURNIPSEED, who died May 28, 1986. She was a self- employed tax accountant, and a member of the Macy Mothers Club and the Indiana Society of Public Accountants. Surviving are a daugher, Deana TURNIPSEED, Indianapolis; a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Lauran [TURNIPSEED[, Macy, and two brothers, William [ANDERSON], Hartford City, and David [ANDERSON], Royal Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Lowell BURRUS officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Plainview Cemetery, Macy. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society. Ellis C. Powell Ellis C. POWELL, 87, Rt. 2, Macy, died at 6:09 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Hospital where he had been a patient for six days. He was born Oct. 8, 1899 in Macy to Elbert and Mary LEFFEL POWELL. He had lived all his life in the Macy community. On June 23, 1928 in South Eastern he married Esther P. ZARTMAN, who died Nov. 1, 1985. He was a retired school principal and mathematics teacher, having taught school for 49 years in Fulton, Marshall, Starke and Miami counties. He retired in 1969. He was a member of the Macy United Methodist Church, the National Retired Teachers Association and the Indiana State Teachers Association. Surviving are two daughters, Anita POWELL, at home, and Mrs. John (Carol) HURST, Mentone; two sisters, Miriam ZARTMAN, Beloit, Wis., and Mrs. Luther (Mary) WEAR, Lagrange. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Macy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Katharine LEHMAN officiating. Burial will be in the Plainview Cemetery, Macy. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, and at the church Saturday for an hour before services. Memorials may be made to the Macy United Methodist Church. LaVerne Smiley LaVerne SMILEY, 90, Canterbury Manor Nursing Home, died at 10 p.m. Thursday at Canterbury Manor. He was born June 3, 1896 in Milford, Ill., to Milton and Annis THOMAS SMILEY. He had lived most of his life in Rochester and California. On Oct. 5, 1918 in Rochester he married Ethel KING, who survives. He was a retired farmer. Surviving are two daughters, Margaret VanderHEYDEN, South Bend, and Mrs. Duane (Carole) FLORIAN, Walkerton; five sons, Julius “Sam” [SMILEY], Tippecanoe; Richard [SMILEY], Argos; Paul [SMILEY], Rochester; Kenneth [SMILEY], Logansport, and Jimmy [SMILEY], St. Joe, Mich.; twenty-six grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; a great- great-granddaughter; a sister, Jewell JOHNSTON, San Diego, Calif., and a brother, Russell [SMILEY], Rochester. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy and Gladys [SMILEY], and three brothers, Earl, Glen and Frank [SMILEY]. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Donald MAUGHAN officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday for two hours before services. Sam W. Woodard Sam William WOODARD, 64, of 1106 Tomahawk Blvd., Kokomo, died at 8:05 a.m. Wednesday at the Howard Community Hospital, Kokomo. A former resident of Rochester, he was born May 26, 1922, in Huntsville, Ala., to Loddie and Lula FERREL WOODARD. He was married in 1955 to Beverly HUNTER, who survives. He retired from Continental Steel, Kokomo, in 1982. Survivors also include four daughters, Jeanette RIGGS, Homosassa, Fla.; Sandra RODRIQUEZ, Van Nuys, Calif.; Deanna GRAHAM, Cincinnati, and Loretta JAENICKE, Greentown; a son, Kevin [WOODARD], Indianapolis; eleven grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas [WOODARD], Phoenix City, Ala., and John [WOODARD], Chattanooga, Tenn. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Indian Heights Grace Brethren Church with the Rev. Gerald KELLEY officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Kokomo. Frieds may call at the Ellers Chapel in Kokomo from 3 to 5 and 6 to 9 p.m. today and at the church Saturday for an hour before services. Saturday, January 3, 1987 Mitch Keller Mitch KELLER, 660 Connecticut, San Francisco, Calif., 94107, and former Texas resident, died Tuesday morning of a heart attack. He and Ann GADY, a former Rochester resident who has lived in San Francisco the last 18 years, were married in San Francisco on Sunday. He was a telecommunications systems designer for a private company. Surviving with the wife are the mother-in-law, Virginia GADY KLANN, Rochester; three brothers-in-law, Joe GADY, Rochester, and Rich and Dave GADY, Cape Cod, Mass., and nieces and nephews. Memorial services were to be held in San Francisco today, with burial in Texas on Sunday. Monday, January 5, 1987 William R. Weiland William R. WEILAND, 78, Rt. 1, 17 B Road, Tippecanoe, died at 4 a.m. today in the Mayflower Nursing Home, Plymouth, following a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 6, 1908 in St. Joseph County to Ernest and Ida GOLDT WEILAND. He moved to Tippecanoe from South Bend in 1945. He was retired from farming and the Uniroyal Corporation, Mishawaka. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. Burial and memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Grossman Funeral Home, Argos. Vida G. Fish Vida G. FISH, 95, Meadow-Vista, Calif., formerly of Talma, died at 1:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m. EST) Friday in Auburn Faith Hospital, Auburn, Calif. She was born June 10, 1891 at Talma to Alva and Deliah DAVIS COPLEN. She also had resided in Arizona and Michigan. In 1910 in Fulton County she married Esthel R. FISH, who died in 1965. She attended the Talma United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Mary) HUMBARGER, Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Lawson (Winifred) BARRET, Douglas, Ariz.; two sons, Charles W. [FISH], Meadow-Vista, and Herbert C. [FISH], LaBelle, Fla.; eighteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Artimus “Bill” COPLEN, Talma. Preceding in death were two sons, Donivan and James [FISH]; four sisters, including Olive WENGER, and a brother, George W. [COPLEN]. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Les TAYLOR officiating. Burial will be Reichter Cemetery, Rochester. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until services. Archie J. Marriott Archie J. MARRIOTT, 73, of 326 Oxford Drive, Arcadia, Calif., formerly of Rochester, died at 1 a.m. (4 a.m. EST) Saturday in a Los Angeles Hospital. He had been in failing health since May. He was born July 24, 1913 near Argos to Frank and Minnie COOVERT MARRIOTT. He had resided in California since 1946. On Nov. 11, 1957 in Las Vegas, Nev., he married Dorothy MASTEN, who survives. He graduated from Rochester High School and Southwestern Law School, Los Angeles. He had been vice president and general manager of Security Title Co., Los Angeles, and vice president of Chicago Title Co., Chicago, prior to retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Packfic Theatre. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Arcadia; Scottish Rite Lodge, South Bend; Al Malaikh Shrine Temple, Los Angeles; San Gabriel Valley Shrine Club, Arcadia Kiwanis Club (a past-president), and the Church of the Good Shepard. Surviving with the wife are two sons, Scott and Richard [MARRIOTT], both at home; two sisters, Mrs. Ross (Orpha) BLACKETOR, Rochester, and Mrs. Bessie NAFE, South Bend, and nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Marion, Loren and Virgil [MARRIOTT], preceded in death. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. Russell WILBUR officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, and on Thursday from 9 a.m.
