He was born Nov. 20, 1922 in Townsend,Wis., to Alex and Sylvia GREWELL COLE. He spent most of his life in the Roann area. He was a retired TV technician, having worked for Shoemaker TV, Roann. He also was a groundskeeper at Highland Hills Golf Course. A member and past commander of the Roann American Legion, he served on the destroyer, USS McNair, during World War II. Surviving are five sons, Michael [COLE], Wabash; Roger [COLE], Highland; Keith [COLE], Punta Gorda, Fla.; Chris [COLE], Roann, and Charles [COLE] Jr., Nashville, Tenn.; A daughter, Debbie COLE, Munster; four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Alice) KEIM, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Mrs. Fred (Mary) LONG, Rochester; Mrs. William (Rosanna) ROSS, Oakland City, and Mrs. Charles (Sinda) EASTERDAY, Francisco; three brothers, James [COLE], Oakland City; Francis [COLE], Peru, and Jerry [COLE], Marion, and six grandchildren. The USS New Jersey is currently facing a very difficult situation due to a loss of 98% of our funding from the State of New Jersey. In February Jim Schuck, the ship’s President/CEO resigned and the Board of Trustees appointed me to replace him. As I got settled in to my new position I quickly discovered the true depth of the ship’s financial condition and immediately formulated a plan to raise the funds needed to get the ship back on a sound financial footing. The first phase of the plan was to reach out to the ship’s volunteers and members of the Board of Trustees and ask them for significant donations of support. In the near future we’ll also be reach‐ ing out to our association membership and today we are reaching out to you, the readers of The Jerseyman. For those who read The Jerseyman regularly, you may recall that in 2010 we reached out to former Battleship crew members who served onboard during the Vietnam period of service asking for donations to help fund the opening of an exhibit covering that period.

SMITH Posted:04/16/10 (Reprinted with permission, BayshoreCourierNews.com ) Middletown – (Monmouth County, NJ) Former State Senator Joseph Azzolina died last evening, Thursday, April 15, at St. Vincent's Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old. Hospitalized for several months, he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Former state senator, former assemblyman, retired Naval officer, philanthropist, food market magnate, and family man, Joe was many things to many people. He was the person most responsible for bringing the Battleship New Jersey, BB62, back to the Garden State as a museum after the ship was mothballed following a career that spanned, like Azzolina himself, more than 40 years of Naval service. Azzolina had served aboard the New Jersey when the ship was called back to service off the coast of Lebanon in 1983. Born in Newark and raised in Highlands, Azzolina never forgot his middle-class roots. The son of Italian immigrant parents, the family lived above the small candy and ice cream store they opened on Miller St. in 1927. When the Highlands Sea Bright Bridge was under construction five years later, the senior Azzolina's expanded their store shelves to incorporate lunch foods for the construction workers.
