Helena Araújo, El Devenir Afuera: De La Colonia Al Exilio, De La Confesión a La Auto-Ficción Sánchez 1 Helena Araújo, el devenir afuera: de la Colonia al exilio, de la confesión a la auto-ficción A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School Of the University of Cincinnati In partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures Of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences By María Clemencia Sánchez B.A., Education and Languages Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia, 1995 M.A., Hispanic Literature University of Cincinnati, 2008 Committee Chair: Dr. Armando Romero Sánchez 2 Abstract Divided into three chapters, my Ph.D. Dissertation, entitled “Helena Araújo, el devenir afuera: de la Colonia al exilio, de la confesión a la auto-ficción,” examines how Araújo’s work is organized around the spatial-temporal discontinuity provoked by the exile of the feminine character. Using Gilles Deleuze’s concept of ‘rhizome’, this dissertation seeks to demonstrate how the feminine character could become-other on the condition that she changes territory by moving from the Colony to the exile. The first chapter is a revision of the symbolic formation of the Colony drawn as a territory of control in a corpus of literary women’s works in Colombia from 18th to 20th centuries. The goal of this revision is to illustrate the symmetry between the confessional narrative modes and the controlling structure of the Colony. The second chapter defines and analyzes the first movement of Araújo’s work: from the Colony to the exile. In this chapter I seek to demonstrate how the exile’s distance changes the representation of a same place. For instance, in La M de las moscas (1970), the narration is structured around the experience of the uncanny and the abjection while in Fiesta en Teusaquillo (1981), the narration is organized from the exile’s perspective and then it is realized as an experience of memory. The third chapter defines and analyzes the second movement of Araújo’s work: from confession to auto-fiction. In Las cuitas de Carlota (2003), Araújo picks up the thread of the epistle narrative mode proper of the end of the 19th century’s feuilleton, depicting thus an anti-heroin protagonist. In Esposa fugada y otros cuentos viajeros (2009), Araújo inverts the traditional discourses and representations of woman producing a contra- discursive feminine character. In this chapter, I seek to demonstrate how the historical reconstruction of the feminine character in fact deconstructs the Colony’s discipline and Sánchez 3 punishment discourses by producing auto-fictional representations drawn either as a paradox or as an aporia. Using Michel Foucault’s concept of ‘archeology of knowledge’, this study ultimately reconsiders Araújo’s tradition in the context of Colombian feminine writing inasmuch as it revises feminine discourses and their relation to power’s practices. Por una maravillosa coincidencia, por esos días se reeditaba en Medellín la novela Las cuitas de Carlota de Araújo y quienes asistimos al seminario de la Casa Taft recibimos una copia de esa reedición, firmada además con las siempre generosas palabras de su autora. De ese encuentro luminoso con Helena Araújo y de esa primera lectura de su obra creció en mí la inquietud de escribir la presente disertación bajo el convencimiento de que estaba ante una escritura profundamente inquietante y extrañamente ignorada en mi país. Quiero entonces dar las gracias al profesor Armando Romero por haber señalado, sin saberlo, el camino de mi encuentro fundamental con la obra y la presencia de Helena Araújo. C’est qui manque est une Nomadologie, le contraire d’une histoire » (34). Gilles Deleuze, Mille Plateaux. (Paris: Les Éditions de Minuit, 1975) En la obra narrativa de Helena Araújo (Bogotá, 1934) convergen tres líneas constitutivas indicadas como auto-ficción, escritura femenina y exilio que se relacionan entre sí, no por una jerarquía que las ordena dentro de la obra, sino por un desplazamiento y una transformación del concepto que las hace converger dentro de la obra misma. Ese concepto que las vincula inorgánicamente al interior de la obra es lo histórico como discontinuidad en el sentido en que Foucault lo ha planteado en su libro La arqueología del saber: “[…] the history of literature seems to be seeking, and discovering, more and more discontinuities, whereas history itself appears to be abandoning the irruption of the events in favor to stable structures” (1972: 6). En la formación del ciclo interno de la obra de Araújo hay un quiebre tanto en lo temporal como en lo espacial que interrumpe las relaciones simetrizadas entre el tiempo y el espacio del personaje femenino que es transversal a toda su obra. Entre el primer libro de Araújo, La M de las moscas (1970) y el resto de su obra narrativa, Fiesta en Teusaquillo (1981), Las cuitas de Carlota (2003) y Esposa fugada y otros cuentos viajeros (2009), hay un quiebre que muestra un cambio discursivo reflejado en las representaciones de la ciudad y un cambio de perspectiva que sugiere un movimiento esencial de su narradora. La continuidad temporal de la obra deviene discontinuidad cuando el espacio ha dejado de ser la referencia inmediata y real desde la cual se escribe. El rasgo auto-fictivo de la narrativa de Araújo no señala entonces Sánchez 10 un proceso constante

I examine how these writers take the historical materials of their sociopolitical world—its tropes and uses of language—and reconstellate them as artworks in which the familiar becomes estranged and reveals truths that have been obscured by the ideological myopia of Spain’s radicalized intellectuals. Accordingly, I demonstrate that the tropes, language, and images that constitute La voluntad, Niebla, and Sonata de otoño have within them a historical sediment that turns these seemingly apolitical works into an “afterimage” of Spain’s sociopolitical reality. Thus I show how sociopolitical critiques materialize out of the dialectic between historical materials and their artistic handling. Although La voluntad, Sonata de otoño, and Niebla seem to eschew political themes, I contend that they are the product of their authors’ keen understanding of the politics of their moment.
