West Java Province has a potential resource for tourism development. This research discusses the application of marketing approach in tourism development in West Java Province, Indonesia. The research tries to find the correlation between the core attraction, infrastructure, and the general condition in the region with the number of tourists that come to that region. This research also tries to recommend adopting the marketing approach in developed country (Groningen Province, the Netherlands) to West Java Province. The methodologies in this research are using two kinds of analysis; quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. The quantitative analysis is used to identify the variables that influence the number of tourists in West Java Province. The qualitative analysis is used to identify the marketing approach that being is in Groningen Province to be adopted in West Java Province. From this analysis, the recommendation is made according to the findings in this research for the development of tourism in West Java Province, Indonesia. The recommendations are also based on the experience of marketing approach in Groningen Province. Reproducing and publishing some part or the whole of this thesis, can be done with permission from the Director of the Master’s Programme in the Institut Teknolgi Bandung and the University of Groningen. ii PREFACE Observing the development of tourism sector in Indonesia makes me want to reflect my knowledge from my bachelor degree in regional/city planning to analyze the relatively new approach in city planning in the Indonesian planner arena. This new approach is the adaptation from marketing science in selling the products of the city. I obtained the marketing science in one of my classes (Spatial Market Research) in this master degree program from Rijk Universiteit Groningen. Based on this science, I started to put my interest in marketing places or cities. As a foreign student in the Netherlands, I had the opportunity to see how the developed countries manage their tourism sector. Based on the knowledge I gained from bachelor degree program and my interest in city marketing, I started to study tourism marketing because I found that Indonesia has potential in developing this sector from many literatures and observations. I wanted to gain lesson learned from developed country’s experience for the development of Indonesia. This is the starting point for my thesis. Before I wrote my thesis proposal, I fot the assistance from Dr. M.E. Bouwman who introduced me to my supervisor, Drs. M. Kavaratzis and also Prof. G.J. Ashworth as the second reader of my thesis. From Indonesia, I was also helped by Dr. Haryo Winarso as my Indonesian supervisor from ITB. Without them I will never completed my degree. During my study, I was really helped by all my friends from Bandung, Double Degree Group from ITB, my friends in Plutolaan Student House, and all my friends in Groningen City. I would like to say thank you to all my families in Indonesia who pray and support me all this time.     BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1 Gambaran Umum Objek Penelitian 1.1.1 Profil Dinas Parawisata Dan Budaya Provinsi Jawa Barat Jawa Barat dikenal sebagai provinsi yang memiliki kekayaan pariwisata yang beragam jenisnya, dan beberapa diantaranya memiliki kualitas dan daya tarik yang tinggi. Sumber daya kebudayaan yang dimiliki seperti bahasa, sastra, dan aksara daerah, kesenian, kepurbakalaan, kesejarahan, nilai tradisional, dan museum, masih tumbuh dan berkembang serta keberadaannya dapat diandalkan untuk pembangunan jati diri bangsa. Pemerintah menempatkan kepariwisataan menjadi salah satu sektor strategis sebagai salah satu sumber pendapatan asli daerah yang potensial. Berbagai upaya telah banyak dilakukan pemerintah daerah untuk meningkatkan sektor kepariwisataan terhadap pembangunan Jawa Barat secara keseluruhan. Dimulai dari upaya untuk meningkatkan jumlah dan lama kunjungan wisatawan, pelayanan di bidang jasa kepariwisataan, kerja sama dengan pihak luar negeri, promosi, hingga meningkatkan daya tarik kepariwisataan daerah. Dalam strategi pembangunan kepariwisataan khususnya dalam upaya meningkatkan daya tarik, sektor kebudayaan menjadi unsur andalan yang kemudian sangat mempengaruhi daya beli suatu daerah. Hal ini menempatkan kebudayaan sebagai sektor potensial bagi pengembangan kepariwisataan sehingga dapat berperan menjadi pendukung dan mitra utama kepariwisataan.     Religious Specificities in the Early Sultanate of Banten

    Religious Specificities in the Early Sultanate of Banten (Western Java, Indonesia) Gabriel Facal Abstract: This article examines the religious specificities of Banten during the early Islamizing of the region. The main characteristics of this process reside in a link between commerce and Muslim networks, a strong cosmopolitism, a variety of the Islam practices, the large number of brotherhoods’ followers and the popularity of esoteric practices. These specificities implicate that the Islamizing of the region was very progressive within period of time and the processes of conversion also generated inter-influence with local religious practices and cosmologies. As a consequence, the widespread assertion that Banten is a bastion of religious orthodoxy and the image the region suffers today as hosting bases of rigorist movements may be nuanced by the variety of the forms that Islam took through history. The dominant media- centered perspective also eludes the fact that cohabitation between religion and ritual initiation still composes the authority structure. This article aims to contribute to the knowledge of this phenomenon. Keywords: Islam, Banten, sultanate, initiation, commerce, cosmopolitism, brotherhoods. 1 Banten is well-known by historians to have been, during the Dutch colonial period at the XIXth century, a region where the observance of religious duties, like charity (zakat) and the pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj), was stronger than elsewhere in Java1. In the Indonesian popular vision, it is also considered to have been a stronghold against the Dutch occupation, and the Bantenese have the reputation to be rougher than their neighbors, that is the Sundanese. This image is mainly linked to the extended practice of local martial arts (penca) and invulnerability (debus) which are widespread and still transmitted in a number of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren).

English Review: Journal of English Education, 1(1), 57-70 Received: 12-10-2011 Accepted: 21-11-2013 Published: 01-12-2012 Abstract: This paper analyzed the presidential interviews of the President of Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudoyono (SBY), based on Grice’s theory of the Cooperative Principles (CP). This study employed a qualitative research design and the data were three transcripts of interview discourse between SBY and eight Indonesian journalists obtained through the presidential official website: http://www.presidentsby.info. The research investigated the ways of SBY in flouting the CP maxims in his presidential interviews and the functions of the flouts were. The research revealed that SBY flouted all the CP maxims and the maxim of Quantity was frequently flouted. Meanwhile, there were four ways used by SBY in flouting the CP maxims, i.e. hedging, indirectness, open answer and detailed element. Wiratraman Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga Abstract The political transition from Suharto’s authoritarian regime has been marked by significant decentralization which has seriously threatened journalism in Indonesia. Extra-judicial killings, physical violence, the criminalization of certain types of journalism, and a lack of support within the judiciary, have created a dangerous atmosphere for members of the press and have impeded the journalistic process. Under this decentralized model, violence against journalists is now very often perpetrated by members of regional and local political organizations as opposed to agents working on behalf of the national government. Unfortunately, law enforcement has proven ineffective in protecting journalist and the legal system offers little recourse in cases where violence has occurred. In fact, the courts themselves have been used as a tool to censor the media, silence opposition, and intimidate members of the press. The research presented in this paper shows that it is those media institutions which operate under a standard of journalistic professionalism and have attempted to produce honest, unbiased news, which are most often targeted by unjust lawsuits and criminal arraignments. This article also shows a new configuration of political imperium which combines of free press, dominant ownership over media, and the context of illiberal democracy which shapes press freedom in the country. Cangkuang Temple is one form of non-verbal folklore (artifact) inherited from two religions, namely Hinduism and Islam. The relics of Hinduism are the statue of Lord Shiva which is thought to date from the VIII century and the relics of Islam originated in the seventeenth century with the remains of the tomb of the Eyang Embah Dalem Arief Muhammad. The potential of Cangkuang Temple is quite interesting as one of the non-oil and gas foreign exchange tourism assets that needs to be improved in its management and empowerment. Therefore, the readiness of the Kampung Pulo community in developing tourism based on culture, history and religion still needs to be improved. Unpreparedness can be seen from the form of tourism development in each segment that has not been holistic and has not yet synergized with each other, regardless of the socio-cultural diversity of each, as well as the unclear market segments that will be targeted for development. Thus it is necessary to conduct research that aims to map the zoning of tourism development in accordance with the character of the community in the Garut Regency region.
