NAIPAUL’S POSTCOLONIAL SURVEILLANCE AND TOURISM IN AMONG THE BELIEVERS: AN ISLAMIC JOURNEY AND BEYOND BELIEF: ISLAMIC EXCURSIONS AMONG THE CONVERTED PEOPLES BY NURUL ‘AIN BINTI ABDULLAH A dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Human Sciences in English Literary Studies Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences International Islamic University Malaysia OCTOBER 2017 ABSTRACT The Nobel laureate V.S. Naipaul (1932 –) has made extensive comments on Muslims and on their religious practices in his two widely circulated travel writings, Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey (1981) and Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions among the Converted Peoples (1998). These two works have triggered debates about his representation of Muslims, as it is believed that his treatment of Muslims and Islam evinces his limited perspective. Under the surface of his gentlemanlike ways of listening and retelling the stories of the people he met in the Muslim countries he visited, his tendency to judge and caricature is palpable in these two books. It seems that he visited the four countries–Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia and Pakistan–and wrote the two books only to reinforce his distorted, preconceived notions and ideas about Islam; and his travels are only to find evidences to vindicate his negative notions. Omitting facts that do not suit his tendency to caricature, he fails to provide a balanced and unbiased representation of the countries and the people he encountered. Based on this premises, this study investigates Naipaul’s portrayal of Islam and Muslims in the two books mentioned and seeks to differentiate the cultural and individual practices that are put forth as Islamic by Naipaul from normative, actual Islamic values. -

Naipaul's detached and often disdainful attitude to emergent societies has made him many enemies in the Third World . and his portrayal of the black man is particularly problematic since it involves a level of aloofness and scorn not to be found even in his comments on the 'wounded civilization' of India and the 'overcrowded barracoon' of Mauritius. Black West Indians are largely missing from Naipaul's early fiction and when they do appear, in the form of characters like the black M.L.C. whose monocle falls in his soup at the Governor's dinner in The Mystic Masseur (1957) or Miss Blackie, the Tulsis' faithful retainer in A House for Mr Biswas (1961), they are usually caricatured. In his more recent novels black characters figure more prominently, but are generally held at arm's length. Signature:……………………….. Date:…………………………….. 2 Abstract Thinking through notions of homelessness and exile, this study aims to explore how V.S. Naipaul engages with questions of the construction of self and the world after empire, as represented in four key texts: The Mimic Men, A Bend in the River, The Enigma of Arrival and A Way in the World. These texts not only map the mobility of the writer traversing vast geographical and cultural terrains as a testament to his nomadic existence, but also follow the writer’s experimentation with the novel genre. Drawing on postcolonial theory, modernist literary poetics, and aspects of critical and postmodern theory, this study illuminates the position of the migrant figure in a liminal space, a space that unsettles the authorising claims of Enlightenment thought and disrupts teleological narrative structures and coherent, homogenous constructions of the self. What emerges is the contiguity of the postcolonial, the modern and the modernist subject. This study engages with the concepts of “double consciousness” and “entanglements” to foreground the complex web and often conflicting temporalities, discourses and cultural assemblages affecting postcolonial subjectivities and unsettling narratives of origin and authenticity. -

SARJANA Vol. 30, No. 1, December 2012, pp. 50-60 NAIPAUL’S REPRESENTATIONS OF ISLAM AND CULTURE IN AMONG THE BELIEVERS AND BEYOND BELIEF Sharmila Rajagopal1 Abstract V.S. Naipaul has often been under criticism for his dark, pessimistic and sometimes brash portrayals of Third World countries, specifically postcolonial societies like India, Trinidad, Africa and even South America. He has been critiqued for these same reasons for his Islamic travelogues, Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey (1981) and Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions Among the Converted People (1998). It is the aim of this article to show how Naipaul’s multiple roles as a traveller, travel writer, an ethnographer, an intellectual, an interpreter, a narrator, and a Western representative, together with his new literary style that is a fusion between ethnographic and travel writing, play a crucial part in his interpretation and representation of foreign cultures. It is concluded that Naipaul’s portrayals are undertaken with a moral and social responsibility of representing those subaltern peoples who are without a voice, which arises from his own experiences as a colonial subject. Naipaul Introduction Theories of representation are as complex as the study of culture and religion. ‘To represent someone or even something has now become an endeavor as complex and as problematic as an asymptote, with consequences for certainty and decidability as fraught with difficulties as can be imagined’ (Said 1989, p. 206). Culture and religion are also complex subjects. Culture is an intricate system of living practiced by a group of people, small or large, inherited by tradition from generation to generation, which evolves constantly, while Asad notes that ‘there cannot be a universal definition of religion, not only because its constituent elements and relationships are historically specific but because the definition is itself the historical product of discursive processes’ (Asad 1986, p. -

S. Naipaul, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001, is one of the most distinguished and prolific contemporary writer. Most of his representative works are relative to the construction of cultural identity、cultural confrontation and ideological confusion which is significant to the postcolonial study. The thesis falls into the following two parts. With the introductory part paving the way, the first part introduces the literature review of Naipaul’s works abroad, and the second part explores the studies on Naipaul’s novels in China. Introduction The 20th century witnesses dramatic changes in the world: the two World Wars, the withdrawal of colonial mandates, the economic liberalization and the social and cultural transformation associated with globalization. Owing to these, a vast number of people are attracted to leave their homeland and emigrate to other countries. As various races and cultures begin to mix, confrontation with the existing cultural structure and ideologies always causes people’s sense of alienation and otherness, which ultimately throw them into the dilemma of identity crisis. Therefore, identity issue — both individual and collective — has become ceaselessly salient during the process of cultural alienation, adaptation and assimilation for the exiled intellectuals, among which V. S. Naipaul is a typical and significant one. Naipaul is an Indian by blood, a Trinidadian by birth and a Briton by citizenship. -

Naipaul’s Women Gillian Dooley Flinders University During his visit to Australia in 2001, Naipaul was asked in a radio interview for his opinion of the feminist movement. His reply was hardly a surprise: “I haven’t thought about it, not that I wish to avoid the issue” (Cathcart). Just a few months later, his response to a debate at a literary festival between Indian women writers on feminist issues was less temperate: “My life is short. I can’t listen to banality. This thing about colonialism, this thing about gender oppression, the very word oppression irritates me” (Gibbons). Leaving aside the question of what makes Naipaul behave badly on such occasions, he has certainly been consistently irritated by any kind of political generalization. His normal reaction to ideology has always been to resist its spell, and although the behavior of those who have succumbed is a frequent subject of both his fiction and his non-fiction, he has almost entirely avoided any examination of feminists or feminism. Nevertheless, individual women are significant enough in his work to merit close attention. In reaction to Naipaul’s three novels of the 1970s,1 at least six articles were published on women and sexuality in his fiction.2 Most of these critics label Naipaul a misogynist, either explicitly or implicitly. For example, Helen Pyne-Timothy claims that “Naipaul has in these works provided a view of women which is extremely harsh, moralistic and judgmental” (306). -
