Overview of AUDE

AUDE promotes excellence in the strategic planning, management, operation and development of higher education estates and facilities. AUDE offers membership to publicly funded UK bodies whose primary remit is higher education teaching and/or research, AUDE has a growing number of private providers of higher education and international universities. There are also business partner opportunities for commercial bodies. We are the UK’s leading source of expert information about the university estates and facilities sector and work to ensure estates professionals are equipped to take a strategic and proactive approach. AUDE is a not-for-profit organisation. Any funds generated through the activities of the Association are used to fulfil its objectives and mission.

AUDE’s members are generally represented by the most senior member of staff responsible for managing, planning, constructing and maintaining all types of accommodation for higher education institutions. Though arrangements vary, most directors of estates are also involved in managing a wider range of capital projects and services including cleaning, security, grounds maintenance, space planning and management, car parking and traffic and, in some institutions, additional services such as catering, conference and sports facilities, insurance, furniture and equipment and printing.

Our membership offer is growing, and we provide benefits and services for all those working in estates and FM within education.

A primary objective is to make sure that university estates provide best value for money and contribute positively to a high-quality student experience. Estates are one of the university’s largest assets, AUDE and its members are at the forefront of ensuring that universities use this valuable asset to full advantage. There is a clear link between the buildings, facilities and accommodation on offer at a university and the desirability of the establishment to potential students and staff.

Our members AUDE currently has over 1,200 individual members from;

• 167 UK higher education institutions • 6 international institutions • 4 business partners • 1 alternative provider

Joining AUDE will allow your organisation to develop and grow relationships with estates and FM professionals in the HE sector. Speak to a member of the AUDE team or visit aude.ac.uk/membership for further details.

MASTERING THE HE STORM - Challenging Thinking for Challenging Times 5 Welcome to the Conference

Paul Morris Director of Capital Development & Estate Services Lancaster University

I would like to welcome you all to Lancaster University for the AUDE 2019 Annual Conference.

The conference theme for 2019 is “Mastering the HE Storm, Challenging Thinking for Challenging Times.”

We have a wide range of speakers, topics and workshops for you to attend including a new ‘debate’ session, as we look to engage, inform and develop our understanding on how we lead Higher Education Estates and Facilities Services.

Throughout the conference there will be key networking opportunities including dinners, evening entertainment and time to meet industry suppliers and sponsors to whom we are grateful for their continued support to the Association, which in turn supports us all.

I hope you have an enjoyable and informative conference.

This year AUDE is encouraging delegates to be environmentally friendly by introducing sustainable delegate items throughout the conference. • The Conference Lanyards are made from recycled PET material. • The AUDE Pens are created using recycled plastic. • The ecoffee cup is made with natural fibre, corn starch and resin and is designed to be used for years to come. • The water bottles are made from Recycled Aluminium and are dishwasher safe. • The USB’s and Power Banks are wooden and have been engraved to reduce the use of plastic and printing during production. We also invite all delegates to return their badges to the registration desk at the end of the conference so that these can be recycled.

6 AUDE: aude.ac.uk | 01509 22 88 36 | @AUDE_news | #AUDE19 MASTERING THE HE STORM - Challenging Thinking for Challenging Times 7 Chair’s Welcome

Keith Lilley AUDE Chair 2018/19 and Director of Estates, Facilities Management and I.T., University of Sheffield

I would like to offer a very warm welcome to all our members, partners and guests to AUDE’s 2019 Annual Conference.

The University of Lancaster, Paul Morris and Andrew Burgess, our hosts, together with a dedicated team of individuals and professionals, have put together a superb programme for this event. The conference will hopefully inspire and encourage us to consider the topical and critical issues in our sector and the wider world.

With a welcome from Vice Chancellor Professor Mike Smith, plenary sessions with Roger Martin Fagg, Paul McGee the Sumo Guy and Professor Dame Sue Black amongst many others. The conference programme is set to be diverse in content, with a broad range of perspectives on navigating the current higher education “storm”. Each speaker will share their insights and experiences on how they thrived and innovated through turbulent times to become successful in their respective fields.

I would like to extend a special AUDE welcome to guests from our international strategic partner organisations; APPA, HEFMA, SCUP and TEFMA, seasoned conference attendees and to those attending our conference for the first time. As our regular delegates can tell you, the AUDE conference is the premier event for senior estates and facilities professionals and a highlight of the year, with unrivalled opportunities for networking, sharing knowledge and expertise, hearing from sector leaders and joining in lively, challenging but overall convivial discussion and debate.

On behalf of AUDE I would like to express our sincere thanks to all sponsors and exhibitors for their contribution, without which we would not be able to put together an event of this scale and quality. Please do visit the exhibition whilst you are here and take advantage of the opportunities it offers to engage with our commercial partners. I would like to thank the conference steering group, chaired by Diana Hampson from the University of Manchester, as well as Assured Events and all those involved in delivering this event on behalf of AUDE. I know that you will find the conference thought provoking, stimulating, beneficial and enjoyable.

With my very best wishes for a successful conference.

Rainer Hersch Conductor, Actor, Writer and Comedian

Rainer Hersch is a conductor, pianist, comedian and broadcaster who has performed in over thirty countries across the globe and worked with orchestras from the St Petersburg Philharmonic to the Tasmanian Symphony. Rainer graduated from Lancaster University in 1985 and started his working life in concert agencies, managing some of the great artists of the world. At the same time he developed a hobby - performing stand-up comedy on the London circuit. Short, unpaid slots led to longer, paid appearances which gradually developed into a parallel career.

Thirty years later, this unique training has kept him in constant demand – combining laughter with music. In addition to conducting orchestras around the globe, he has built up a considerable reputation as a broadcaster and presenter in the UK for the BBC and Classic FM. For a long list of corporate clients, he presents modules on leadership and runs team building exercises centred around the theme ‘what business can learn from the symphony orchestra’.
