Each year during our committee meetings we discuss changes that could be implemented to improve the festival. If you have any suggestions you feel may be of benefit to us, please speak to one of our committee members to pass on your views. We are looking forward once again to meeting friends, old and new, on 19th, 20th and 27th February and also at our Winners’ Concert on 5th March. Poet and songwriter Fran Landesman donated her papers to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the spring of 1999. She retains the copyright to her materials, so that her written permission or the written permission of her heirs is needed in order to reproduce any one of her works in its entirety. Fran Landesman was born Frances Deitsch on October 21, 1927, in New York City. Her father, a successful dress manufacturer, collected books; and her mother, a journalist, loved the theater and music. Fran has a brother, Sam Deitsch, who lives in San Francisco. Fran attended private schools, Temple University in Philadelphia, and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She was working for Biancini Silks in New York when she met Jay Landesman, a writer and publisher of Nerotica magazine from St. Louis. They were married in July of 1950, and shortly thereafter they moved to St. Louis. Jay went to work in his family's antiques business, and he and his brother, Fred, opened a classy cabaret called the Crystal Palace in 1952. In 1958 the Landesmans moved the Crystal Palace to Gaslight Square, an entertainment district developing among the bars and restaurants and antique shops at Boyle and Olive near the Central West End of St.

Die Chansons des Franzosen Michel Legrand wurden in den USA ein Erfolg dank der englischen Lyrics von Marilyn und Alan Bergman und die Melodien von Tommy Wolf sind nur die Hälfte wert ohne die wunderbaren Texte von Fran Landesman.     Steve Ross Press STEVE ROSS - C'MON AND HEAR: AN IRVING BERLIN JULY 4th CELEBRATION Birdland, NY A themed evening with Steve Ross is as illuminating as it is entertaining. With cards-face-up fidelity, original embellishment, and the kind of indisputable panache that never sacrifices emotion for sophistication, Ross tonight offers a high-spirited celebration of Irving Berlin, “Russia’s best export after vodka.” As exemplified by a jaunty “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” Ross’ lucid musicianship, aided by the excellent Jered Egan on bass, is more effective than a full band in capturing the intention of Berlin’s of-the-people oeuvre. The pianist effortlessly delivers light, tangy ragtime. Selective history and anecdotes act as bridges, not filler. Composer/lyricist Israel Isidore Baline (1888 -1989) fled a Russian pogrom, landing on New York’s Lower East Side. After stints as a singing waiter and song plugger, he began to write in earnest, catching ragtime fever. Ross describes the genre as “rhythms that came up the Mississippi to sit on marching tempo,” adroitly demonstrating with “Play a Simple Melody.” We’re treated to excerpts from several vivacious songs, including a percussive “When the Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves for Alabam”’ that appears to have fancy footwork. “I Love a Piano,” one of our host’s favorites, is as dancey as it gets. Ross is able to make exuberanceeloquent. Higher octaves arrive quiet-difficult and effective. “Mandy” is equally infectious. “...so don’t you linger...” he sings boyishly, pointing at/warning the audience. Gestures come easily tonight, drawing us in. “When I Lost You,” Berlin’s first ballad, written upon the devastating, post-honeymoon death of his bride, is melodic, yet profound in its grief: “I lost the sunshine and roses/I lost the heavens so blue/I lost the beautiful rainbow/I lost the morning dew....” “Say It Isn’t So”—moving like chiffon and marabou, and a smoky, sotto voce “How Deep Is the Ocean? (How High Is the Sky)” show mastery of melancholy ardor.

    Jazz Jazz is a uniquely American music genre that began in New Orleans around 1900, and is characterized by improvisation, strong rhythms including syncopation and other rhythmic invention, and enriched chords and tonal colors. Early jazz was followed by Dixieland, swing, bebop, fusion, and free jazz. Piano, brass instruments especially trumpets and trombones, and woodwinds, especially saxophones and clarinets, are often featured soloists. Jazz in Missouri Both St. Louis and Kansas City have played important roles in the history of jazz in America. Musicians came north to St. Louis from New Orleans where jazz began, and soon the city was a hotbed of jazz. Musicians who played on the Mississippi riverboats were not really playing jazz, as the music on the boats was written out and not improvised, but when the boats docked the musicians went to the city’s many clubs and played well into the night. Some of the artists to come out of St. Louis include trumpeters Clark Terry, Miles Davis and Lester Bowie, saxophonist Oliver Nelson, and, more recently, pianist Peter Martin. Because of the many jazz trumpeters to develop in St. Louis, it has been called by some “City of Gabriels,” which is also the title of a book on jazz in St. Louis by jazz historian and former radio DJ, Dennis Owsley. Jazz in Kansas City, like jazz in St. Louis, grew out of ragtime, blues and band music, and its jazz clubs thrived even during the Depression because of the Pendergast political machine that made it a 24-hour town. Because of its location, Kansas City was connected to the “territory bands” that played the upper Midwest and the Southwest, and Kansas City bands adopted a feel of four even beats and tended to have long solos.
