A GERMAN WAR CEMETERY IN RUSSIA1 or the German-Russian Reconciliation of Sologubovka The remains of millions of fallen soldiers still lie in the soil of the former battlefields of World War II in Europe. The soldiers of the Red Army and the Wehrmacht are recovered by Russian and German teams in Kursk, Smolensk, Volgograd (Stalingrad) and Saint Petersburg (Leningrad). The dead are exhumed, identified and reburied on war cemeteries.2 One of the war cemeteries is Sologubovka in northern Russia, around 70 km from St. Petersburg.3 54.247 soldiers,4 who fought for the German Wehrmacht, lie on 5 ha, with space for 80.000 graves,5 taken care by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. (German War Graves Commission).6 The German war cemetery on Russian territory is not a simple resting place. The dead attacked the Soviet Union, occupied the region of former Leningrad, starved over one million civilians to death and left the land with violence, suffer and pain. 55 years later, in 2000 German official delegations, journalists and the families of the dead arrived in the village of Sologubovka, to celebrate the inauguration of the German war cemetery. The way was paved by signing a war grave agreement between Germany and Russia in 1992. Does the fact, the construction of a cemetery by the Volksbund for the former besieger, in a country of the defenders, such as Russia signify an approach to an understanding between the former enemies? Is a reconciliation possible, if one country celebrates the victory and the defeated country mourns? Does the respect, the humanitarian and dignified treatment of the dead (also of the former “enemy” dead) symbolize a historical dialogue between Russia and Germany? “Reconciliation over the graves”7 is the official slogan of the Volksbund, a non-government- organization, based in Kassel, in the center of Germany.

Khazanov2 The nomads of the Eurasian steppes, semi-deserts, and deserts played an important and multifarious role in regional, interregional transit, and long-distance trade across Eurasia. In ancient and medieval times their role far exceeded their number and economic potential. The specialized and non-autarchic character of their economy, provoked that the nomads always experienced a need for external agricultural and handicraft products. Besides, successful nomadic states and polities created demand for the international trade in high value foreign goods, and even provided supplies, especially silk, for this trade. Because of undeveloped social division of labor, however, there were no professional traders in any nomadic society. Thus, specialized foreign traders enjoyed a high prestige amongst them. It is, finally, argued that the real importance of the overland Silk Road, that currently has become a quite popular historical adventure, has been greatly exaggerated. Los nómadas de las estepas, semidesiertos y desiertos euroasiáticos desempeñaron un papel importante y múltiple en el tránsito regional e interregional y en el comercio de larga distancia en Eurasia. En tiempos antiguos y medievales, su papel superó con creces su número de habitantes y su potencial económico. El carácter especializado y no autárquico de su economía provocó que los nómadas siempre experimentaran la necesidad de contar con productos externos agrícolas y artesanales. Además, exitosos Estados y comunidades nómadas crearon una demanda por el comercio internacional de bienes exóticos de alto valor, e incluso proporcionaron suministros, especialmente seda, para este comercio.

The whole complex of social, economic, political and cult urological processes led to global changes in art of an era of postmodernism. Verbal creativity of Kazakhstan of the period of Independence endures modification of art forms. If to speak about literature of Kazakhstan, it should be noted that in Kazakhstan the national and Russian-speaking prose actively develops. The Kazakhstan literary criticism addresses the research of main tendencies of development of modern literature – the genre.

However, in terms of area, it represented the largest extent of non-Russian lands to fall under Russian control, and in a rather short period: between 1820 (the year of major political and administrative decisions aimed at the Little and Middle Kazakh Hordes, or Zhuzs) and 1885 (the year of the capture of Merv). The conquest of Central Asia also brought into the Russian empire the largest non-Russian population in an equally short time.     THE NOTION OF “KAZAKHNESS” BEHIND THE SYMBOLIC NATION-BUILDING OF KAZAKHSTAN Narek Mkrtchyan Yerevan State University Abstract The paper deals with the processes of overcoming Russian ‘colonial’ impediments to the creation of symbolic spaces for the emergence of a new national self- consciousness in Kazakhstan. The paper highlights the importance of Nazarbaev’s decision to transfer to and construct a new capital Astana in fostering the ideas of national identity and ethnic belonging. Therefore, an attempt has been made to observe the phenomena of urbanization and reformulation of state symbols in explaining both ethnic and civic mechanisms of influences on people’s consciousness. Additionally, the works of various Kazakh intellectuals and cultural figures have been taken into consideration to examine the notion of Kazakhness and its’ contribution to the development of the Kazakh national identity. Content analysis of architectural design of Astana and state symbols is essential to understand the vision of Kazakhstan’s imagined future. Introduction After the breakdown of the Soviet Empire all post-communist regimes emphasized the role of ethno nationalism in establishing new nation-building projects. The model of Kazakhstan’s nation building is quite unique in terms of harmonious interethnic coexistence of a multiethnic society. Since independence President Nazarbaev initiated serious programs in an effort to start active nation-building processes. As a matter of fact, Nazarbaev’s nation and state building policies are represented for the Kazakhs as a civilizational endeavor. Nazarbaev took Kazakhstan through large scale administrative, legislative, social, economic and political reforms.

Legacies and Innovations The Kazakhstan Initiative at GW Gratefully funded by the Kazakhstan Embassy in Washington D.C. On November 6, 2013, the Central Asia Program at IERES launched its Kazakhstan Initiative with a one-day event on "Kazakh Culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. Legacies and Innovations.” The conference, opened by the Ambassador of Kazakh- stan to the United States, H.E. Kairat Umarov, featured the most prominent repre- sentative of Soviet and contemporary Kazakh culture, Olzhas Suleymenov, cur- rently permanent representative of Kazakhstan to UNESCO. This conference is part of the IERES/CAP goal of relinking knowledge on Eurasian societies with the study of their cultures. IERES’s Central Asia Program hopes to contribute to the study of the cultures of Eurasia as living dynamic entities, functioning in interaction with politics and the economy, and reflecting contemporary social changes in the region.
