OK, unless we are travelling to and from school, work or some other essential destination then we must remember that all public transport is off limits for leisure purposes until restrictions are eased. But that should be no more than a few weeks away now so get planning to leave that car at home and use our local bus for lunch in town, a visit to the castle, a ride the steam railway or, using the No 12 from Westgate Street, treat yourself to a visit to the beach or a trip to Plymouth - all, of course, when these venues are back to normal opening. All this is helped by there now being a 16.25 service from Tesco, leaving Westgate Street at 16.32 and Langdon Cross at 16.42. The relevabt times have been highlighted to make the timetable easier to read and there is a useful space to write notes in - even your shopping list!

Update on Village Defibrillators March 2021 by Pat Orridge

For those of you who are new to the Village or who do not know, I am happy to say that we have three defibrillators, located at Brazzacott, Clubworthy and the crossroads at North Petherwin. This started in league with The North Petherwin WI who had held a ‘Big Breakfast’ event. Toni Martin, who was the president at the time, also gained a donation from Community Foundation. When my husband passed away, I took the decision to only have immediate family flowers and to ask for donations towards the defibrillator from other family, friends and neighbours. The Crossroads defibrillator is dedicated to my husband Mick. With the wonderful donations received, it took us over the balance needed for the purchase and ten years maintenance contract. It seemed sensible to fund raise for Defibrillator number two. A dog show, village walks, personal donations all contributed to some amazing funds being raised. As well as a ‘donate your change’ bucket on the bar at The Countryman Inn, Tresillian Gwennap was looking for ways of working on his Volunteering section for his Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, raised £60 by knocking on doors, explaining what he was doing, leaving donation envelopes and returning to collect them.

Such great support led to more money than we needed…… Defibrillator No 3…… Covid greatly slowed down any fundraising opportunities but with personal donations and those of friends we had almost reached our target but still needed to find a suitable location. The Community Heartbeat Charity had agreed we could have the defibrillator installed and gave us a year to raise the outstanding amount and installation cost. Michael O’Connor and I were having a discussion about other matters, and he offered to host the defibrillator on the wall of his property and to ensure the installation cost was covered by him (and his electrician! I think I still owe him a cake..) This left approximately £450 to raise and I approached the Parish Council, who very generously contributed this amount. Defibrillator 3 is now installed and live. With the grant and fundraising we have raised an amazing £9400. Thank you to everyone, who over the course of four years has supported my fundraising ideas as well as me personally, I really could not have done this without you. I am hanging up my hat for funding more defibrillators….. However, you have not seen the last of me! After even more amazing support for the Village Loop last year which went towards supporting the North Petherwin Mini Badgers, I am now working with the main Football Club committee members and the Mini Badgers raising funds for their ongoing project. Hopefully with restrictions lifting we will be hosting at the football ground a Family Fun Day and dog show on July 4th This time with an extra class – Vicars Vote and our new Vicar Alison Hardy will be the judge for this class – an opportunity for her to meet the lovely parishioners and for us to meet her. ow can Rosemary Neal and I not organise the Village Loop walk again – it was so well received last year, luckily just before the next lockdown and just what we all needed, so this is year 5, more amazing rosettes, the first Saturday in September.. hope to see you at both events. 7 Petherwin Business Services Local Shopping The list on the left is taken from the February edition of Cornish Moo – single sourced, straight from the farm milk via self service machine. Our monthly recipe brought to you by our very own professional chef.

Cauilflower, leek & smoked Tregida cheddar filo pie

700ml semi skinned milk 1 bay leaf ½ medium brown onion (chopped and diced) 1 large cauliflower (Approx 900grams cut into florets) 6 garlic cloves (peeled and diced) 1 leek thinly sliced Handful of Sage leaves 2 tbsp olive oil 60g unsalted butter 60g plain flour 150grams smoked cheddar (Tregida oak smoked cheddar or simular) plus some grated for topping. 30g parmesan or vegetarian altertnative ½ tbs cayenne pepper 320grams filo pastry 1 medium free range egg, lightly beaten Salt and pepper

1. Heat the milk in a small pan until just simmering. Add the bay and onion, then remove from the heat and set aside for 30 minutes to infuse. 2. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6. Put the cauliflower, leek, sliced sage leaves and garlic on a large roasting tray, season well with salt and pepper, then toss with the oil to coat. Roast for 15 minutes or until golden. Divide the cauliflower between the two tins/skillets and set aside. Squeeze the garlic from the skins and set aside (discard skins). 3 Melt the butter in a pan over a medium heat, add the flour and whisk to form a smooth paste. 4. Strain the infused milk into a jug (discard the solids), then gradually add to the pan, whisking for 3-4 minutes until thick. Remove from the heat, whisk in the garlic, both cheeses (not the grated) and cayenne, then taste and season. Pour the cheese sauce evenly over the cauliflower and set aside to cool. 5. Unroll the filo pastry, cut into half and roughly fit the tins/skillets to form a wavy rustic look. Brush the edge of each tin/skillet with beaten egg. Brush these with beaten egg and put the lids on top, pressing down the edges to seal. Lightly score each lid with a knife to ecorate and cut a slit in each one to let the steam escape. Top with some grated smoked cheddar. 6 Bake the pies for 30-40 minutes until golden and crisp, then remove from the oven and erve.
