Why are People wearing ashes? This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. We wear ashes as a sign of our desire to repent from the evil in our lives and in our world.

What is Lent? Lent is the 40 days before Easter, during which Christians prepare to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Traditionally this preparation includes prayer, fasting and almsgiving as ways of recommitting our lives to Christ’s gospel.

How do we recommit our lives to Christ’s Gospel? We recommit our lives to Christ’s gospel by making choices for justice and against evil. During Lent we should make a special effort to be more aware of how we choose and what we choose.

Fasting and abstinence

Days of Abstinence: No meat can be eaten on Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays during Lent. This applies to all Catholics 14 and older.

Days of Fast: Only one full meal is permitted on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for Catholics between 18 and 59. Two smaller meals are permitted but the small meals should not equal a second full meal. Drinking coffee, tea and water between meals is allowed. Snacks between meals are not allowed.

Penance - If you haven’t gone to confession in a while, Lent is the perfect time to reconcile yourself with God and the Church.
